Whenever summer comes around, a large handful of individuals struggle to stay active. Many become unmotivated, and as a result, lose track of their usual fitness routines. While lacking motivation during the summer is quite normal, there are several ways to gradually rediscover your love and excitement for exercise. With the plentiful amount of activities summer has to offer, from swimming to enjoying the weather on a walk, staying fit throughout the season will begin to feel more attainable.
1. Prioritize exercising outside
As the temperatures rise, exercising outside is a great way to soak in the beautiful weather while getting some movement in. Bike rides, walks, and runs are all common examples of activities that allow you to take in and enjoy your surroundings. If these forms of movement do not appeal to you, finding exercises outside that make you feel your best is key. You may realize that walking your dog is more enjoyable than doing so alone. Or, you may find that running while listening to music is crucial to bringing enjoyment to the burn. Through trial and error, discover the ideal exercise routine that excites you!
2. Make a routine that works for you
Often, those wishing to either begin working out or get back to their typical routines have a flawed idea of what constitutes "success." However, there is no single regimen. For some, waking up at 6:00 to engage in a difficult workout is ideal; for others, a good routine may look completely different. With that said, each individual's preferences lead to varying practices.
Likewise, there is no "right" type of movement. Spending time in the gym is not the only way to get fit. Yoga and walking are both examples of underrated exercises that may be perfect for you.
3. Practice swimming
Many find that crafting a fitness routine that is both enjoyable and effective can be pretty difficult. If you don't think you've found a form of exercise that appeals to you, give swimming a shot. Perfect for the summer, swimming is a great form of exercise that also allows you to destress. More importantly, it encourages others to join in, too, making it an easy way to stay fit and enjoy time with friends and family.
4. Walk during your free time
With a great deal of downtime during the summer, you may often feel bored and not know how to spend your days. Instead of scrolling on your phone or getting distracted by social media posts for hours on end, encourage yourself to get out of the house and go on a walk. Whether you decide to take a ten-minute or an hour-long stroll, any time spent moving your body is time well spent.
Along with dedicating some time throughout the day to the activity, finding ways that help you truly enjoy walking is key to staying motivated. You may enjoy doing so with a big group of friends, or even simply with a sibling or parent. No matter what a fun routine looks like to you, once you discover whatever makes even walking interesting, stick with it.
5. Don't set unrealistic goals
When beginning to get fit, you may feel inclined to establish some goals in an attempt to keep you incentivized. However, setting far-reaching targets can do quite the opposite. Seemingly unattainable ones will only make you feel as though there is no point in working out, as you will never be able to achieve them. Rather than creating unrealistic objectives such as wanting to work out every day of the week, taking it one step at a time is crucial to not losing your love for exercise.
To be sure, there is nothing inherently wrong or problematic about having goals for yourself. However, having too many, too fast will inevitably lead to not meeting your expectations.
6. Implement a sustainable routine
Although you may feel extremely motivated at the beginning of your fitness journey, there will inevitably be instances when you simply do not feel like working out. Understanding that this is normal is by far the most important thing. Listening to your feelings and your body on these types of off-days is key to creating a balanced, intuitive routine. If you decide to hold yourself to a strict schedule despite how you feel on a given day, you will notice yourself quickly burning out.
To implement a sustainable workout routine, you must take rest days, listen to yourself each step of the way, and see exercise as enjoyment rather than a chore.
By merely recognizing that you would like to stay fit over the summer, you have already taken a big step towards your goals. Approach exercise with the right balanced mindset, and implementing it into your daily routine will undoubtedly feel effortless and natural.
