Assemble the necessities

Firstly, it is necessary to start with basic makeup skills and products before jumping headfirst into complex, demanding as well as challenging makeup techniques and trends. This can be accomplished by creating a small makeup kit comprising the most fundamental products.

The following list of products consists of the most used products in makeup routines overall. However it must be mentioned that makeup routines should be completely individual and up to the person using it, hence why you should decide on your own whether you are comfortable using some products or not.

1. Moisturizer

Although Moisturizers might lean more toward the skincare side, it is still an important asset for a satisfying and clean base to start your makeup application with. Moisturizers suitable for your skin type help hydrate the skin and ensure a smooth and even surface.

2. Foundation

Nowadays foundations come in different formulas and varieties, so it is easy for you to choose a foundation that you like and are comfortable using, whether it is the widespread liquid foundation, cushion foundations, or if you want a more natural finish, a tinted moisturizer. Adding to that, you should match it up to your skin tone for a natural-looking complexion.

3. Concealer

Concealers will be your best friend if your goal is to camouflage dark circles, spots, or blemishes. They are normally more concentrated than foundations, with a thicker consistency to best conceal unwanted areas. It is also best to select a shade lighter than your skin tone or chosen foundation shade, so it will give you a bright complexion.

4. Mascara

Mascaras are mainly to be used to enhance your natural eyelashes. Whether you're after lengthening, volumizing, or curling effects, mascara is a great way to define your makeup look and complete your eye makeup.

5. Eyeshadow Palette

As a beginner, you should invest in a versatile eyeshadow palette featuring more neutral shades that can be used on the day to day basis. You can also play around a little with different color combos to not only enhance your eye shape but also complement the outfit you choose to wear.

6. Blush

Try to brighten up your complexion with a blush of your choice for a radiant look, whether it's the usual powder blush or a liquid blush. Pick shades that complement your skin tone and blend them for a natural, healthy glow. This simple touch of color will add vibrancy to your face, brightening your overall look.

Fun fact: You can also use your lip products as a blush for a consistent look if you happen to use lipstick or a lip tint!

7. Lip products

Finish off your makeup with a bit of lipstick or lip gloss of your choice. Whether you're in the mood for bold reds, subtle nudes, or going for a glossy look, there's a lip product for every mood and occasion, in any kind of color.

The Dos and Don'ts

For those who are new to the world of makeup, understanding some of the dos and don'ts can be a significant step toward achieving a flawless look, and getting nearer to how you want your makeup to look. By keeping these guidelines in mind, you can build your skills and create makeup looks with confidence.

Keep in mind there is a plethora of rules that can apply to makeup. What's important is for you to decide which ones work for you and your needs and which don't. Here are some basic dos and don'ts, which are important to keep in mind, that may assist you in your journey of trying makeup for the first time.

Do's:

  • Start with skincare: Cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen before makeup can help you create a clean and smooth base.
  • Invest in quality tools: Brushes and sponges make a huge difference when it comes to the application, so invest in tools that will last a while and help you get the best possible result. However you don't have to splurge on expensive items immediately, there are also always budget-friendly tools that do the trick, especially for beginners!
  • Blend, blend, blend: Be patient and make sure transitions between shades and different kinds of products look harmonious for a natural look.
  • Practice with neutral tones and styles: It is best to master basic techniques first before experimenting with bold colors and styles.
  • Remove makeup before bed: removing your makeup at the end of a long day and doing your skincare routine ensures that your skin stays healthy and fresh for the next time you apply makeup.

Don'ts:

  • Lighting is important: It is best not to apply makeup in harsh lighting, as it can make colors look odd and lead to uneven application. Most of the time your makeup will look completely different from what you saw in the mirror.
  • Don't be afraid to seek advice: You shouldn't feel embarrassed about asking for help from others if you're unsure about certain techniques or products.
  • Don't use expired makeup: Expired products shouldn't be put on or near your face as they can harbor bacteria and cause skin irritation as well as breakouts.
  • Don't follow trends blindly: What makes your makeup look best is to find what makes you feel confident and comfortable in your skin, though, of course, it isn't bad to follow a makeup tutorial or two.

Invest Wisely

As a beginner, it's very possible to get carried away and immediately spend a lot of money on the first makeup products, especially if they are aesthetically pleasing. But it's a lot wiser to invest in a few important items from affordable brands that do have not beginner-friendly options but are also very budget-friendly.

For example, the brand Maybelline is a good choice for beginners since it offers a wide range of affordable and high-quality makeup products. It also has a wide range of products for every need you have. There is also NYX Cosmetics which is also known for its professional-quality products at accessible prices.

ELF Cosmetics is a great option as well if you're on a budget. Their makeup brushes, in particular, are widely used due to their quality and affordability, which makes them perfect for beginners on a budget.

Important Reminders

1. You don't have to get all the items in one go. Just start with one item that you think you'll need or want to try first.

Personally, I started with a colored lip gloss and some Eyeliner. You can slowly add to your makeup bag.

2. Remember less is more. Every generation of women has learned this the hard way.

Start by applying with a light hand under natural light. You can always build it up if necessary.

3. Hygiene is always important, especially with eye products. You should wash your brushes and sponges regularly and not let them get too dirty.

Sometimes products must be thrown out every 3-6 months, even if you haven't finished them. Bacteria on your makeup tools and products can cause breakouts and serious infections.

4. Makeup is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle and cannot fix it all. Eat healthy food, get enough sleep, exercise, and take care of your skin. You'll feel much better not only physically but also mentally.

Starting as a beginner in makeup can be both exciting and a little intimidating for a lot of people. With the right products, techniques, and a little time, you'll see how just much makeup can affect your appearance. Just remember to slowly start with the basics first, practice a lot, stay patient, and don’t be afraid to experiment a little bit, even if you aren’t satisfied with the final product.

But most importantly, have fun expressing yourself through makeup. It doesn’t matter what you're going for, as long as you stay true to yourself and feel comfortable in your skin.
