Yogurt: Which Brands Are Breakfast-Worthy, and Which Should Be Booted?

As a teen who eats yogurt pretty much every day for breakfast, I've done my fair share of trial and error to figure out which yogurt brands and flavors are amazing, and which ones shouldn't be thrown a second glance. In this article I will discuss both the taste and health benefits of different yogurt brands and give them ratings— so you know which ones are worth spending on!

1. Tillamook

Tillamook has always been one of my favorite yogurt brands. The texture isn't too thick, unlike some Greek yogurts, and it's great to pair with fruit or even on top of some oatmeal. Each six ounce container contains about nine grams of protein and twenty-one grams of sugar. Nine grams is a pretty excellent protein content, but that sugar might be your enemy if you're looking to eat healthier at breakfast time.

Favorite flavors: California Peach, Oregon Strawberry, Key Lime

Tillamook also recently came out with a new creamery collection, which includes containers swirled with two flavors. My current favorite is the mix of raspberry and plain. The creamery collection contains less sugar and more protein!

Rating: 4/5

2. Fage

Fage is another solid staple if you're looking for a healthy breakfast yogurt. It is a lot thicker than the Tillamook, due to being Greek yogurt, but it tends to lean to the healthier side. While I don't have the exact numbers, Fage yogurt tends to be super high in protein (I once had a container with 18 grams of protein in it!) and lower in sugar.

In addition, Fage provides its mix-ins in a separate container to the yogurt. This is really nice, as you can decide how much of the flavor you want with each bite.

Favorite flavors: Plain, Blood Orange

Rating: 5/5

3. Oui by Yoplait

Oui by Yoplait is a brand I discovered recently that I really enjoy. It's French yogurt, not Greek, so it's not very thick at all. While I wouldn't call Oui the healthiest yogurt, the protein content is pretty low and the sugar content is pretty high— it's a great afternoon snack when you're craving something sweet. Oui has a large variety of flavors, and even has a couple coconut dairy alternative flavors like mango and strawberry for any vegans or lactose intolerant people out there.

Favorite flavors: Lemon, Mango (vegan), Vanilla

Rating: 4/5

Oui also has an Apple Cinnamon oatmeal flavor, where there's apple cinnamon oatmeal and yogurt in the same container. I totally recommend if you're looking for something new to try for breakfast— it's the perfect combination of oatmeal and yogurt.

4. La Fermiere

La Fermiere is another French style yogurt I love— but this one stays as a once in a while treat. While the yogurt itself is really tasty and of super high quality, if you're looking to stay super healthy, I'd skip this one. La Fermiere is full of sugar and fat, and super low in protein content.

I keep this brand in my fridge for the occasional dessert— or just if I want to treat myself to something fancy. I'm not trying to put you off though— this yogurt really is tasty, and the texture is out of this world.

Favorite flavors: Mango Passion Fruit, Orange Blossom Honey

Rating: 3/5

5. Chobani

Chobani, another solid staple yogurt. Pretty much every Chobani flavor is tasty and they're all really high on protein too, ranging between 10-12 grams in every container I've had. Chobani is a great breakfast option, and not too high in sugar (they even have a low sugar option)!

Chobani even has an oranges and cream flavor that tastes just like the creamsicles that the ice cream van sells — essentially a dessert in a healthy form. Chobani's texture is similar to Tillamook's, but it's definitely healthier.

Favorite flavors: Peach, Oranges and Cream, Blueberry

Rating: 5/5

The Final Review

Yogurt comes in so many varieties, and these are just a few of my favorite brands out there. It works as a really great breakfast, snack, and dessert, and you can even have it on top of oatmeal. Sometimes I dip strawberries in yogurt and freeze them which is a great, healthy yogurt snack to fulfill your sweet cravings.

I definitely recommend trying out Chobani, Tillamook, and Fage for breakfast, and keeping around a La Fermiere for dessert. And the Oui Apple Cinnamon Yogurt is now one of my staple breakfasts— don't knock it till you've tried it.

The five yogurts I've reviewed in this article I would definitely recommend. However, even though I'm a pretty devoted yogurt lover, there are a few yogurt brands I wouldn't pick up while shopping. Yoplait is one.

Even though I love Oui, generic yoplait I find to be too sugary and thin— almost soupy in texture. I'd leave yoplait to the kids. The second is Noosa yogurt.

While Noosa can be really tasty, especially the swirled flavor containers, it is super high in added sugar and doesn't have many health benefits to it. You can find the same kind of taste and texture in Oui yogurt without the added cost of too much sugar.

Happy yogurting!
