Why Red is the "It" Color This Fashion Season: Ways to Rock Red in Your Style

Beauty & Style

Mon, January 15

Red is the perfect color for fall and winter as it encompasses the best of the two seasons.

In the fall, we switch out jean shorts for jeans, and tank tops for sweaters, as the leaves trade their leafy green hue for deep garnets, burnished russets, and glowing clarets. When the chilly fall weather turns to frosty winter, the red leaves fall off trees, but the festive color sticks around, in our rosy cheeks when we step out into the cold, in festive holiday decor, and in the romantic Valentine’s Day.

The color red helps us acclimate to the colder months of the year and is the perfect accessory hue to go with fall and winter color palettes.

Ways to Wear Red

Because red is already a bold color, it’s fun to wear as a statement piece. Whether this means opting for a bright red sweater, or wearing a stylish pair of red silk pants, both styles are not only perfect for the holiday season, but also for every day. If you normally go for a monochromatic look, this can be a fun way to change up your everyday style, while trying the new “sandwich method” of dressing, where you coordinate your shoes or accessories to your top.

Not only can you wear red in the main pieces of your outfit (pants/skirt, a top, or a dress) but also through accessorizing. This is the best way to incorporate the dominant color into your everyday look in a subtle but elegant way.

Some simple ideas for staying cozy and embracing red are: investing in a cute pair of red socks to wear with sneakers, loafers, or ballet flats. Not only do you get to wear fab fall and winter shoes, but you also get a pop of color at your feet!

Another cute option is a pair of snappy red shoes- crimson mary janes, burgundy knee high boots, or red Adidas gazelles. All of these shoes are perfect with a pair of jeans, white t-shirt and cardigan, or, for a more trendy look, you could style denim on denim with a denim t-shirt or a jean jacket with a top underneath.

Another festive look that always works is red tights! You could go for brick red, maroon, crimson, scarlet, burgundy, or candy apple red. All are adorable options to go with a fall skirt and sweater, cute dress, or leather shorts and a chunky knit, which are great options to accessorize with red tights.

To encompass all of the cozy vibes, you could invest in a fashionable pair of mittens, with matching hat, scarf, and earmuffs in your fav shade of red! These accessories can be seen over your coat, so you are always reppin the seasons “it-color!”

The red handbag. It’s not a revolutionary fashion piece, but can make for a wonderful investment. The beauty of bags is that they come in an array of styles, sizes, and shapes!

You can opt for a shoulder bag, tote, or even a backpack for everyday wear to school. As for size, you may prefer an oversized, slouchy, relaxed look, or a clean cut, square/rectangle shape that is sleek, or an in-between. You can never go wrong with any of these styles, and they will always look fashionable whether you’re running to class in jeans, a chunky knit sweater and Uggs, or strolling around town with your friends dressed in a black mini skirt, silver slinky tank, and knee high boots. With a red bag on your shoulder, you’ll always pop in a crowd.

Red hair accessories will never go out of style. A popular style icon is the infamous “french girl.” French women are viewed as extremely stylish and sophisticated. A great way to emulate their incredible sense of fashion is by adorning your beautiful locks with red accessories.

One possibility is bows, which are quite the rage with the “coquette” aesthetic taking over Tik Tok. A red barrette in your hair, or even a red headband, will also add to your already overall cool-girl vibe. The best place to buy an acrylic headband (ie: the type Caroline Bessette made famous in the 90’s) is from a French pharmacy or drugstore, such as France Luxe, who sells online!

Accessories are easily the simplest way to implement the color red. It can also be fun to wear it loud and proud as more of a statement in your look, such as a red lip or red nails. We all know about the “red nail theory” and its allure, but what about the fact that it just looks classy, and goes with anything you wear?

Well, it does indeed go with anything. Grey, brown, sea moss green, black, royal blue, silver, white, pink, the list goes on. In addition to red nails, a red lip is a must and both have their share of cult classic colors. For nails: O.P.I’s Big Apple Red, Essie’s Bordeaux, and Chanel’s Rouge Noir or Pirate. As for lip colors, check out Refy’s new lip kit that includes their fabulous red lip liner and lip gloss, also Revlon’s Fire and Ice lipstick, MAC matte lipstick in Ruby Woo, or even Fenty Beauty’s Icon Velvet Liquid Lipstick in The MVP worn by the queen herself, Rihanna.

Some great crimson looks rocking the color of the season have been seen on Hailey Bieber, especially with her recent Rhode launch, also Sophia Richie Grainge, who has mastered the quiet luxury vibe, and many brands are emphasizing the red trend to their consumers. Brands like J.

Crew and Reformation have been releasing uber-adorable red items and have even created special edits of all of the red-hued accessories and clothes they sell. Be sure to check out the cutsie red vibes that can be seen almost everywhere you look, whether you spot them walking down the street, on Tik Tok, or in movies!
