The Ultimate Guide to the Black Widow: What to Know Before Watching the Movie

July 07, 2021

I don't know about you, but I'm definitely excited about the release of this year's most awaited movie. While the outbreak of coronavirus delayed the initial September 2020 premier plan, the excitement amongst fans did not wane. Recently, Kevin Feige confirmed the movie will finally appear on the public screen on Disney Plus and in theaters on July 9, 2021.

With the official release date, fans now find themselves more excited than ever about watching the movie. It's definitely been a while, so, before you dive right back into the world of the amazing superspy Natasha Romanoff, also known as the Black Widow, it would be my pleasure as a self-declared Marvel Cinematic Universe geek to catch you up on everything you need to know about the well-loved character.

But before we dive into the details, I would like to power up the sirens, "spoiler alert". If you haven't watched these Marvel movies, then I recommend you should go see them first.

Iron Man 2

Natasha made her very first appearance in 2010's Iron Man 2, doing what she does best: spying. In this amazing film, Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., appointed her to examine and spy on Tony Stark, the man behind the Iron Man armor, as his secretary, Natalie Rushman.

While she initially strengthens her bond with Iron Man and his secretary, Pepper Pots, by the end of the movie, Tony figures out her true identity. Her mission ends after Nick calls her back.

The Avengers (2012)

Natasha and her natural flair return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again in The Avengers 2012. The citizens have officially entitled her as an Avenger after beating Loki and securing the earth from the extraterrestrial Chitauri Army. We get a glimpse of her back story and her relationship with Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. We are told that they've fought countless battles together and are truly best friends.

Captain America And The Winter Soldier (2014)

In this movie, we see Natasha team up with Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. They discover the ugly truth about S.H.I.E.L.D. and find that Hydra, the secret organization started by the Red Skull, was secretly flourishing under the shadow of the Shield. They have an epic fight with Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter soldier, who was last seen in the movie Captain America: The First Avenger chasing Hydra agents in the famous train scene. Hydra controlled and brainwashed Bucky to accomplish their ugly missions that he would never dream of.

After taking the shield down, she's exposed in front of the entire nation besides her inscrutable actions. She escapes unharmed in search of a new identity after refusing to follow orders to surrender and work for the opposing side.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

As an official Avenger, we witness the Black widow fighting alongside her counterparts in the effort to defeat Ultron. Here she meets two new avengers, Wanda and Quicksilver (the twins). The connection between her and Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk, heightens during this movie.

The chemistry between them was undeniable, especially during the well-known shower scene at Clint's house! Later, at the end, when the Avengers have defeated Ultron, Hulk safely takes Nat to the helicarrier and goes after Ultron to make him pay for what he did to Nat.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Natasha's vital role in this movie comes after she has defeated Ultron and been an Avenger for a considerable amount of time. Here, she fights Hydra's agent Crossbones, saves people from a bioweapon, teams up with Iron Man to sign the Superhero Registration Act, fights with Team Cap, and helps Captain and Bucky escape the fight for them to catch Zemo, who served as the sole reason for the conflict between the Avengers.

Later, she faces the consequences for her later actions and goes underground with Captain America and his team to assist them in their efforts to catch terrorists. She dyes her hair blonde and, with the help of her KGB training and some counterparts, tracks down all the terrorist organizations supplied with Chitauri technology. After defeating those organizations, she, Captain America, and Falcon leave for Lebanon.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

"We don’t want to kill you, but we will."

Remember that amazing line? If you've watched the movie, you most likely do! That's what Natasha said while saving Vision from Corvus Glaive, a member of The Black Order. Towards the end of the scene, she, Captain America, Wanda, Vision, and Flacon fly to the new Avengers base, where Rhodes, also known as the War Machine, welcomes them and keeps all the conflicts aside for the sake of the entire world.

After an incredible women's power fight scene against Proxima Midnight, she faces Thanos, who owns all the Infinity Stones, save for the Mind Stone. Despite Nat's skills and best attempts, Thanos proves to be too powerful and, with a snap, the team ultimately loses the intense fight, and half the population turns to dust.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

In Avengers: Endgame, Thor kills Thanos after an ambush conducted by Natasha, the remaining Avengers, and Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel.

Five years later, we see Natasha leading the remaining Avengers and doing her best to keep the family together. She and Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man, discuss how they can undo Thanos' actions and bring everyone back to normal, then the two, together with Captain America, seek help from Tony Stark, who agrees on creating a time machine. The remaining Avengers plan revolves around Natasha and Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, being appointed to collect the Soul Stone from the planet Vormir.

Self-Sacrifice

"A soul for a soul"

After arriving at Vormir, the pair finds that the collection of the Soul Stone entails sacrificing something they love the most. Despite all of Clint's efforts to calm her down and stop her, Natasha sacrifices her life.

This is where the story of Black Widow ends in the MCU.

It was really unexpected, and no one would've dreamed about that. The last scenes of Black Widow were truly heartbreaking, her sacrifice for a better world so that Clint can return to his family and live a happy life. Later, Kevin Feige announced that there would be a Black Widow solo movie in production and the fans would witness her back story, while she escapes from Captain Ross, who wants to catch her for what she did in the Civil War.

So, how's she going to manage her past and present at the same time while knowing that her future is in danger? To get all these answers, we have to watch this most anticipated movie releasing on 9th July.

So, what's the new movie all about?

According to the official website, "in Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger."

What are we expecting from the movie?

We're expecting a lot from this movie, as Marvel Studios have already delayed it, so the fans will eventually demand something good and unique. I've prepared myself for a good back story packed with action and a hint of humor. I can't wait to witness the fight sequence between Black Widow and Taskmaster.

We fans won't settle for less this time. So, we have extremely high expectations for this movie.

The most enticing fact about this movie is how marvel studios are planning to continue the story of Black Widow, besides the fact that she's not alive in this timeline. It'll be really astonishing to witness Scarlett Johansson return as Black Widow. I've prepared myself for this glorious movie. Have you?

Happy Watching!
