Here Are the Most Anticipated Movies of 2021

With so much of our year spent inside watching Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or whatever else we could get our hands on, you may be finding yourself scrolling endlessly through the recommended pages for hours on end. Don't worry - you're not alone! Luckily, 2021 seems to be starting off a bit brighter with these new releases coming soon!

Sci-Fi

Dune

An adaptation of Frank Herbert's famous science fiction novel, the son of a wealthy family is given the responsibility to protect the most important item that exists in the galaxy. Featuring celebrities including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Timothée Chalamet, and Jason Momoa, with Director Denis Villeneuve, the film is expected to do incredibly well even with Covid-19 hurting box offices.

The Matrix 4

Although the plot is unknown, news about the movie has made headlines that Gina Torres, who plays Cas, is confused and upset as to why the movie will not bring back her living character but is bringing back dead characters.

Army of the Dead

This gruesome Sci-Fi film features soldiers (Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt) sent on a mission to attempt an extraordinary heist during a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. Although it may sound cheesy, Director Zack Snyder, known for his films Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, and The Flash, is almost sure to make the film engaging and realistic.

Eternals

A mix of Sci-Fi and Drama, immortal beings called the Eternals explore Earth before humans and influence the Earth’s history and how it was formed. The film will star Marvel's first gay romance, and fans have already begun speculating that Thanos may appear in the film.

Morbius

An unlikely Marvel film, Morbius features a biochemist (Jared Leto) who attempts to cure himself of a rare blood disease. However, when his experiment goes wrong, he discovers that he accidentally infects himself with a form of vampirism. Based on the Marvel comic, it will be the third installment in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. Although it sounds cheesy, it is on nearly every “Anticipated Movies of 2021” list, so it has high expectations!

Action

Outside the Wire

An action-packed sci-fi film set in the future featuring Anthony Mackie and Emily Beecham, a drone pilot is coupled with a top-secret android officer on a mission to stop a nuclear attack after being sent into a war zone. Just released this past week, the film instantly became Netflix's top trending movie of the week.

No Time to Die

In another installment in the James Bond series, Bond leaves active service but is recruited by an old friend working for the CIA. His mission leads him to uncover a threatening past, a dangerous present, and murderous future technology. Although its release has been delayed three times due to Covid, audiences are hoping to see James Bond in action again very soon. (Featuring Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, and Rami Malek).

The Suicide Squad

Although the exact plot is unknown, this superhero film based on the DC comics features Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and their team of villains played by Taika Waititi, Sylvester Stallone, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Idris Elba, Viola Davis, Nathan Fillion, Jai Courtney, John Cena, and so many more.

Black Widow

A highly anticipated film in the Marvel Galaxy set between the films Civil War and Infinity War, viewers uncover the history and quests of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Although there has been speculation that the film will be delayed once again due to Covid, Disney has announced that it may be released on Disney+ as the last alternative if theaters are still not performing well after a second delay.

Cherry

After an Army medic (Tom Holland) suffering from PTSD becomes addicted to drugs, he must turn to dangerous bank robberies to pay off his debt. Directed by the Russo brothers known for their work on Avengers Endgame, Infinity War, Civil War, and countless other Marvel cinematic masterpieces, is raising expectations.

Jumanji: Level One

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle shocked the world when it, “went from punchline to one of Sony's biggest box-office hits ever” (Business Insider), earning a staggering $962 million from box offices worldwide. Set before the original movie in 1869, Jumanji Level One follows two children who are gifted a mysterious game that they must play in hopes of finding answers to their father's disappearance.

Top Gun: Maverick

Another highly-anticipated movie starring Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly and directed by Joseph Kosinski, a 30-year Navy veteran aviator accomplishes his dream of becoming a test pilot. However, he must avoid advancing in his career to remain in the air. Paramount has made headlines after rejecting numerous offers from streaming platforms and remains determined to release the film in theaters.

F9 (Fast and Furious 9)

Another… One…? Apparently so! In the 9th installment, Dominic and his team experience their most difficult mission yet -- against Dom’s own younger brother. For viewers that love action, explosions, and chaos, this series is most definitely for you!

Boss Level

Similar to Groundhog Day but with a twist, a retired special forces officer must find why he is being forced to repeat the day of his death and how he can make it stop. Starring Mel Gibson, Annabelle Wallis, Naomi Watts, and Frank Grillo, this film will become Hulu's first time-loop movie offered on the streaming service.

Untitled Spider-Man Sequel

Unlike on other occasions, Tom Holland is keeping his lips sealed about the plot of the third installment of the Spider-Man series, the sequel to Spider-Man Far From Home.

Perfect for the whole family, get ready for this star-studded modern musical of the classic film “Cinderella”. No matter how old you are, the beauty and magic of this modern musical fairytale will whisk you away to a whole new world - oh, sorry, wrong princess.

Earning a stunning 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, this incredible film tells the true story of February 25, 1964, when four icons (Syracuse football legend Jim Brown, Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, and singer Sam Cooke — met at a Miami hotel after Muhammad Ali, defeated heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. In a highly-anticipated film starring Ryan Reynolds which GameRant claims, “might be the only video game movie the world needs”, a bank teller discovers that he's actually a character inside a violent video game. Come on - if it's Ryan Reynolds, it's got to be great.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Starring Nicholas Cage as himself along with Neil Patrick Harris and Pedro Pascal, Cage is forced to attend a birthday party for a millionaire super-fan and is forced to reenact his most famous characters and scenes. Although it may be confusing if you aren't familiar with many of Cage's movies, his stellar acting and hilarious roles will keep you intrigued nonetheless.

Mystery/Crime

Death on the Nile

When a young heiress is murdered aboard a cruise ship, a veteran detective must jump into action to track down the killer. I am personally super excited about this film, as I have loved similar films like The Orient Express and Clue.

The Many Saints of Newark

A prequel to HBO's crime series The Sopranos set in the 1960s and 70s, this criminal drama explores the formations of a New Jersey gangster amidst the 1967 riots between the Italian-American community and the African-American community.
