Marvel Zombies: Everything You Need to Know (Plot, Trailer, Cast, Release Date)

TV & Film

September 03, 2025

Marvel Studios is back with another animated series coming late September, but this time, there will be more blood and explicit content than there was in Deadpool and Wolverine (might be a bit of a stretch, but we'll find out).

Marvel Zombies will be the second MCU series to be rated TV-MA, following the 2025 Daredevil reboot, Daredevil: Born Again, and the first ever MCU animated series to be TV-MA. Marvel Studios had just released the first official 1 minute and 45-second trailer online, and let's just say, do NOT go to the 0:19-20 and 0:47 time marks on YouTube.

The series will be the third MCU installment of Phase 6, following the releases of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Eyes of Wakanda, which released on July 25th, 2025, and August 1st, 2025, respectively. All four episodes (not enough, I know, right?) will be released on the same day, which is September 24th, 2025. But what about the plot, and who will be in it? Read below to find out.

The Plot of Marvel Zombies

This series doesn't just come out of nowhere; it's actually based on one of the episodes from the 2021 MCU animated series “What If…?” What is this episode, you may ask? The episode is titled “What If… Zombies?!,” and it introduces an alternate universe where the world, including the Avengers, was infected and turned into zombies due to a virus from the Quantum Realm, a subatomic universe that has no laws of physics and operates outside time and space. Marvel Zombies will continue the lore from the What If…? episode and revolve around the survivors of the virus trying to find a way to stop the zombies and the plague itself in order to save the world.

The Phase Six animated series is also based on the 2005-2006 five-issue comic book series titled Marvel Zombies, which also follows the zombies who were infected with the Quantum Realm virus. If you want to learn more about the Marvel Zombies, I highly recommend reading the five issues and watching the What If…? episode.

Trailer for Marvel Zombies

This is the first official trailer for Marvel Zombies (pretty graphic, right?). It first starts with a zombie getting its head shot by an arrow (which could be either Kate Bishop or Hawkeye), and then it showcases the survivors (Yelena Belova, Shang-Chi, Kate Bishop, etc.) of the zombie plague fighting against the zombies. Warning: if you’re sensitive to graphic series/movies that include blood, I suggest not watching this trailer, let alone even the series, but if you are not, viewer discretion is advised. Where Can I Watch Marvel Zombies?

Image Credit: Disney Enterprises, Inc. from Wikimedia Commons
  • All MCU television releases, including Marvel Zombies, are released exclusively on Disney+ due to Disney’s ownership of Marvel.
  • Disney+ offers a Disney+/Hulu bundle with ads for $10.99 a month and without ads for $16.99 a month. You can buy it today!

If you currently do not have TV-MA as your rating, you’ll need to:

  • Go to ‘Edit Profile(s)’
  • Choose which profile you want to update to TV-MA and select the pencil icon.
  • Go down to ‘Content Rating’ and then select ‘TV-MA’.
  • Once you have completed these steps, you’re all set! You can also do this for your other profiles.

My Reaction

I have seen Deadpool and Wolverine, and that was Disney going hardcore and not giving a heck about the MCU fans who are sensitive to blood and cuss words, but with Marvel Zombies? It feels like Marvel is coming back to its old ways, especially with Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four (they were absolutely peak).

It's beautiful to see Marvel adopt the Mortal Kombat style for their live-action and animated shows, and I hope that they continue with it and not go all soft, considering it has a TV-MA rating. Not only that, but I’m also glad that they took inspiration from the What If…? zombie episode and the Marvel Zombies comic book series instead of just brushing it off and making it out of nothing.

Conclusion

Marvel Zombies is set to be the shortest yet entertaining MCU animated series since Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. It’s glad to see Marvel supplementing us some Phase 6 content for us Marvel Fans while we wait a whole year to head to the theaters to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While the series doesn’t come out for another three weeks, I recommend buying a Disney+/Hulu subscription today if you wish to watch this series with your own eyes (and then canceling it the next day).
