10 Hidden Netflix Gems You Need to Watch

Pop Culture

August 31, 2021

Netflix is full of shows and movies no one will ever be able to know or watch. And the worst part is that there are so many good productions that we never hear about because they are hidden by the most popular and watched ones. And when you are trying to watch something different that you have never heard of, it is almost impossible.

I mean, how many of us have been scrolling endlessly through Netflix without actually finding something to watch?! That's why I compiled this list of 10 hidden gems you need to add to your list and watch when you are in need of something new. Oh, and I recommend you read till the end because there might be a bonus.

Unorthodox

Unorthodox is a 2020 German mini-series. It follows a young woman who lives in an ultra-orthodox community in Brooklyn and decides to flee to Berlin, leaving behind her arranged marriage to find her own path. In Berlin, where her mother lives, who years ago also left the community, she meets a group of friends, who she met at a conservatory.

While all of that is happening, her husband, after finding out she was pregnant, goes to Berlin with his cousin to try and find her. This is a beautiful show to spark new emotions and to show you a little more about culture and the world you never knew about. I loved watching this show.

I don't know how I found it, it was pure luck. And it's probably one of the best miniseries I have ever watched.

The defeated

The defeated is a 2020 series, with only one season yet. After World War two, Max McLaughlin, an American cop, goes to Berlin in the summer of 1946 to help one of the police forces in the chaotic atmosphere after the war. While he is there, he tries to find his older brother who disappeared during the war, who is now killing Nazis that were at a concentration camp.

I haven't finished this show yet. I have only just started, however, it's already on this list, which means it's THAT good.

Young Wallander

Young Wallander is a British 2020 mystery/crime show. Kurt, a recently graduated police officer, gets his first case. Kurt, who lives in a dangerous and poor neighborhood, witnesses a young boy tied to a fence with a grenade in his mouth, which soon blows up.

The show follows the police force trying to discover who is behind this attack. With only one season yet, this show made me want the next and the next right after I finished the last episode.

Isi and Ossi

Isi and Ossi is a 2020 German true rom-com. It follows the story of a rich girl with a culinary dream and a poor boxer, who decides to fake a relationship, which will eventually lead to a true one. The first one to make the offer is the girl, who is trying to provoke her parents, so they finally let her live the life she wants.

I mean, what more can I say?! The plot is amazing and the chemistry of these two actors is through the roof! You definitely need to watch this if you are in need of a true spicy romance.

Warrior nun

Warrior Nun is a 2020 action/fantasy series. Ava, an orphan, after waking up in a morgue, finds out she possesses superpowers, being the chosen Halo Bearer for a secret sect of demon-hunting nuns. The description of this show might not appeal to everyone.

It didn’t appeal to me either, since I am not a big fantasy with swords admirer. However, after watching it, I recommend it to everyone. It has strong women that fight to protect the world and has a very cute romantic sub-plot.

Into the night

Into the night is a 2020 Belgian sci-fi/thriller show. One day, everything is normal and the next, the radiation of the sun starts causing a global disaster on earth. Everyone starts dying when exposed to the sunlight.

An overnight flight from Brussels manages to escape the sun, by flying from city to city, to get food and gasoline to keep flying. However, the stress and fear lead to fights and difficult decisions that must be made. This show will keep you on your toes the entire time, wondering what's the next move. And, without giving any spoilers, the last episode kind of ends with a cliffhanger where it could go extremely badly or well in the next season (which's already been announced).

Home for Christmas

Home for Christmas is a 2019 Norwegian rom-com with two seasons. Johanne is a 30-year-old nurse, who gets constant comments about how single she is and the fact that she never brings a partner for Christmas dinner. She then decides to start a 24-day hunt for a partner to bring home.

While watching this show you will root for a couple, and I am not going to say any spoilers, but it’s probably one of the cutest and sexy tv couples. You can expect to cry until you can’t breathe, but you can also expect to laugh and love the main character and relate to her in so many ways, even if you aren’t the same age as her.

The one

The one is a British 2020 sci-fi/crime show. It follows Rebecca, a scientist, who discovers a way to match DNA to find the perfect partner for a person and makes a new matchmaking device. Although the research works, it will lead to crimes, murder, and drama. This show is a bit slow-paced, but with the mystery involved, it will make you want to watch the next episodes just to find out everything.

Romance is a bonus book

Romance is a bonus book is a South Korean romance show. Like with almost every k-drama, you can expect a slow-burn romance that is beautiful to watch. This one follows two childhood friends, Cha Eun Ho, a writer and chief editor at a publishing company.

Kang Dan Yi was once a popular copywriter. However, after a divorce and losing a job, being a single mom while looking for a job is not easy for anyone. To get a job, she finds herself lying and ends up in the same building as her old friend.

They start to get involved in each other's lives and a romance starts to grow. I just restarted this show, and all I can tell you is that you will cry, laugh and fall in love with the main characters.

Two weeks notice

Two weeks notice is a 2002 rom-com, with the brilliant actors Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. Lucy Kelson, a lawyer who uses her career for social activism, starts working for George Wade, the public face of the Wade Corporation, a firm she has always been opposed to. In need of a lawyer, he asks Lucy to take the job with the promise that he won’t demolish the community center that helps so many people.

Their relationship at work and constant fighting will lead to a romance they both try to ignore. Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock have great onscreen chemistry that you can clearly see in this movie.

40 days and 40 nights (bonus)

40 days and 40 nights is another 2002 rom-com. This movie follows Matt who just broke up with his long-term girlfriend. After not being able to deal with it mentally and trying to be with other women, he vows to stay celibate during the first day of Lent.

During those days, he finds the girl of his dreams. He will learn to have a deep connection with her, while not being able to try anything with her, and both will learn about being patient and respecting each other.

With this list of eleven new things to add to your list, I think you are more than ready to dive into Netflix and binge for a couple of hours. Hope you have fun and love these productions as much as I did. And after this, you will be able to spot with ease those movies or shows that are not talked about enough.
