June 07, 2025

There's something.. magnetic about being a model, something besides perfectly tailored proportions and airbrushed skin. There's a sense of power, something in the walk and the eyes that embodies confidence, and vision.

Perhaps that's the reason behind the 2025 trend: model off-duty. Combining the intimidating with the effortless requires skill, skill that fashion designers and influencers are pining for.

Think of Emily (Ratajowski), making waves every time she steps out in a new top or outfit. Think of Vlada, or Giselle.

All of this women have this energy about them, an invincibility, if you will.

Which Female Character Trope Do You Belong To?

Take the Quiz: Which Female Character Trope Do You Belong To?

Whether it's in film, TV, or literature, you've likely come across these female character tropes. Take this quiz to discover which one best matches...

1. Have Clean Lines

There's something to be noticed in almost all high fashion's models, on and off the runway. The lines of the outfits are clear and defined. They know what is meant to be oversized, and where.

They know precisely how puffy the puffy sleeves are. In fact, if you drew a silhouette of the model, there would be a clear, aesthetically pleasing shape.

Try: oversized coats, stripes (strategically placed), patterns that utilize geometry, and peplum tops.

2. Be Strategic With Balance and Contrast

Models know how to make their outfits interesting without being overwhelming. The ultimate goal? Have variety without overwhelming the eye.

If you have a complex pattern on your top, wear a simple coat. If you wear oversized jeans, pair it with a tight tank top. If you have one bright piece, try to pair it with neutral tones. Know where you want people to look and make it stand out. Shapes, too, matter. Try to get contrast in the shapes of your clothing. For example, a triangle shaped blouse and flared pants work together because they both fit the bigger-to-smaller pattern.

3. Choose a Statement Piece

Balence doesn't have to mean boring, however! Rather, it means to be strategic with WHAT you make interesting. A key part of an outfit is picking a statement piece- a piece that contrasts and stands out- and centering the outfit around it.

The piece doesn't just have to be clothes. It could be a bold makeup look, fancy jewelry, or a hairpiece/accessory.

4. Combine the Trendy with the Unique

While most models have a pretty good grip of what's popular and what's not (it's kind of their job), they also have their own personal aesthetics and opinions. You can look into niche subcultures, such as alt or kawaii, for a statement piece, but also take into account the general trends of the street. A good example of this is the bow trend that began in 2024, thanks to Lana Del Rey and the coquette fashion niche.

This began as a key piece for dollette and couquette looks, featuring corsets, ribbons, and the Coca Cola aesthetic, but became more versatile and adaptable as the public adopted it to top off many 2025 trends, such as dark academia, preppy, and coastal. Taking interesting pieces from all kinds of sources and adapting them to be more universal is something every model and model wannabe should know how to do.

All in all, the model off duty aesthetic is a surprisingly versatile one, one more dependent on a set of rules than any must have pieces or garments. It is also easily customizable, and in a way reminiscent of the Dark Feminine or French Girl aesthetics, in a way that involves personal values and individualistic expression: a philosophy behind the clothing structure. Let me know in the comments if you have any additional tips that work for you, or any other aesthetics you would like me to look into!

And if you like this style, be sure to look into Old Money, Academia, or French Girl aesthetics. I hope you enjoyed this article, and I look forward to your feedback.
