Audrey Hepburn: the Epitome of Style and Class

Fashion

September 07, 2025

Honestly, how can anybody not love Audrey Hepburn? Beautiful, elegant, and sweet, the woman built a name for herself that cannot be outlasted, no matter how many years it's been since the renowned Breakfast at Tiffany's. She is an icon, and an inspiration, a genuinely kindhearted spirit, and who can forget that she snuck away from her Nazi father to dance for the resistance? She is one of those women who seem to do no wrong, and this, it seems, applies to her style as well.

Dismissed by many as outdated, I would argue it is anything but. Below, I will outline how to update her iconic outfits to make them modern, distinctive, or suit any preference, along with my personal opinions.

The Iconic Pieces

First, let's get into what you probably think of when you think of Audrey.

The Little Black Dress

"Every woman needs a little black dress!"

Though Audrey didn't invent this trend, she certainly reinvented it. In fact, the little black dress might be one of the best representations of her style: simple yet perfect for her body, and accented with accessories.

If Audrey is good at anything, it's at combining sophistication with minimalism: pairing a simple dress with overflowing jewelry, gloves, sunglasses, and tiny stud earrings. It reminds me of something a princess might wear (she is, in fact, a distant relative of Princess Diana, and it shows!!).

My take: the little black dress is a classic for a reason, but I would argue that there are many ways to go about this trend, and Audrey's is just one of them. The reason this piece is so well-loved is its versatility: had Audrey chosen to pair the dress with a leather jacket and boots rather than pearl earrings, she would have looked every bit as convincing.

Thing is, the trend can also be dangerous for those not interested in outfit planning: black doesn't work on everybody, and a little black dress isn't an excuse for bad styling. It REQUIRES accessories.

Overall? 7.5/10.

Outfit Ideas: Audrey's outfit is genuinely a genius idea, and I might even go a step further by making it a 60s button-up Chanel and adding a bucket hat or beret. For a fit and flare or a long sleeve minidress, adding dangling, dramatic (possibly black) earrings is a fast way to combine elegance with glamour. For a date night look, add boots, a leather jacket, and a headscarf or earrings.

The Headscarves and Accessorizing

If I'm being honest, I can't think of a satin headscarf without thinking of Audrey. She practically owns the idea; she's made it so distinctly and uniquely her own. Now a must-have for travel to Europe, I have never seen such a game-changing yet easy-to-use accessory. You can even make one at home with old fabric!!

Audrey's ability to accessorize always awed me. She adores a doll-like kind of look, one that complements yet slightly overwhelms her frame. Her gloves, tiara, necklaces, and sunglasses could look like cosplay on anyone else, yet they always seemed to fit her perfectly.

She always seemed perfectly content in whatever she was in, without a care in the world, and this, I believe, is an important tip in fashion as well as life. If you wear something confidently, if you feel you belong in it, others will feel this way too.

My take: Audrey's accessories deserved the iconic status much more than that little black dress- [censored], her accessorizing skills are THE reason she's so worshipped as a fashion symbol. I don't know much more I can say, so 9/10.

Outfit Ideas: Combining anything Parasian (such as a blazer, button-up coat, or 60s dress) with a headscarf seems like the obvious choice, but I would argue that a bohemian look, such as a flowy minidress, paisley, or patchwork, would work well with a heascarf as well. Bonus points if you combine the two!!

The Minimalism

Audrey is also fond of simple silhouettes, neutral colors, and fit and flare dresses. If she's known for anything, it's for her timelessness, and with that, it means wearing things that could be considered refined and in good taste, no matter the era, interests, or particularities of the viewer.

This means sticking with more muted tones, classic patterns (that are unlikely to ever truly go out of style, such as polka dots, gingham, or stripes), and having a defined silhouette for all her outfits (often using a belt or fit and flare dress to do so). (This last one, by the way, is important regardless of which aesthetics you tend to stick to; in fact, it's one of the most important fashion rules of all time.)

Her wardrobe could be referred to as a capsule wardrobe, favoring cigarette pants, buttoned blouses, black and white, and boat neck tops. (Notice how all of these are perfect for her petite body frame? Feel free to change what you need to: the use of her body shape is what you should take away from this.)

An interesting fashion tip from her: if you want to bring some life to a neutral outfit, a pop of red is a great color to add!

She often wore penny loafers, ballet flats, and soft pastels, once again embracing the doll-like aesthetic. If you're into luxury fashion, think Chanel or Christian Dior to get the right effect.

A Fun Modern Twist: Most of this can be replicated fairly easily in a modern age, with the exception of maxi dresses. Rather, using fit and flare shapes, capsule wardrobes, and focusing on line and shape while shopping can make the experience more helpful for you if you want to imitate Audrey.

The Makeup

While understated, the makeup is perhaps the most important thing about Audrey Hepburn's style. Her doll-like eyes and innocent, gentle face truly sell the entire aesthetic. I mean, really, try to imagine Meghan Fox or Rihanna trying to pull off these outfits (no hate, though!! I adore them both!!). Audrey Hepburn made it look convincing, with her light, feminine, swanlike aesthetic. Here's a breakdown below.

  • Slight eyeliner wing: Audrey's eyeliner perfectly extended her eyes and made them look slightly bigger and wider. Her curled lashes and upward mascara had the same effect.
  • Straight, dark brows. Audrey's brows were very put together, and they perfectly matched her coloring and makeup. The most important thing here is what suits your face: straight dark brows don't look good on everyone!
  • White eyeliner on the bottom. This made her eyes look rounder and more innocent.
  • Soft blush. Her blush is very well blended and well-suited to her skin tone, and it looks almost natural (if slightly more exaggerated). Choose a color ever so slightly darker than your natural blush and BLEND WELL. I recommend using powder blush.
  • Pink-red lips. While her lip color changed, it was always somewhere between pink and red: something bold, but not too much so, and perfectly coordinated with both her skin and the rest of her outfit.
