We often think we're doing everything right like, washing our hands after using the toilet, sneezing into tissues or even eating clean...all the obvious precautions. However, the real danger isn't out there, it's baked in our daily routine. Every day, we’re exposed to bacteria and viruses in ways we don’t even realize. Tuberculosis (TB) isn’t something most teens worry about. But if you're spending time in crowded spaces, think concert pits, hostel rooms, public transport, it might be time to. TB spreads through the air, and one deep breath in a badly ventilated room is all it takes.
TB can be easily inhaled in public spaces like hostels, trains, slums (any poorly ventilated or crowded room). So when you're gasping for air in the fan pit of a concert just know you might be catching more than a vibe.
However, you can always wear a mask or position yourself where there's better airflow and more room to breathe.

Human Papillomavirus Innfection
HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, and most people don’t even know they have it. It spreads through skin-to-skin contact, not just s3x. Yep, oral s3x too. And here's the kicker: HPV can lead to cancer, including throat cancer through oral s3x.
Throat cancer (Oropharyngeal Cancer) is a type of cancer that affects the tonsils, throat and tongue, that can be acquired through oral s3x. You might notice a persistent sore throat, ear pain or even difficulty swallowing. Therefore, always use protection, even for oral s3x (Check out dental dams for oral s3x) and make sure to get vaccinated for HPV routinely and regular check-ups for yourself if asking about your partner’s sexual health history sounds weird if you're not married.
Cancer
Cancer might seem like something you don’t need to think about yet, but some risks build up over time, starting with habits you might already have.
Take scented candles and incense, for example. Burning them frequently in rooms without proper ventilation can release harmful chemicals into the air. And if you’re regularly pulling late-night study sessions or working night shifts, that long-term disruption of your sleep cycle could increase your risk of certain cancers. Yes, disrupting your circadian rhythm over long periods has been linked to increased risk of breast and colorectal cancer, possibly due to suppressed melatonin production.

To prevent it a few precautions can be taken, like burning candles in well-ventilated areas, switch to beeswax or soy-based candles, or use essential oil diffusers instead and prioritize sleep hygiene, consider melatonin supplements (only with medical advice), and get regular health screenings.
So… Why Should Teens Care About This?
Because these aren't far-off "adult" diseases, they start with choices you make now. You don’t have to live in fear or obsess over every breath you take. But knowing the hidden risks helps you dodge them early.
To conclude, sometimes, it’s not what we don’t do, but what we do every day that puts us at risk. TB, HPV, and even cancer often slip in through the familiar, crowded spaces, intimate moments, or the cozy glow of a candle. Paying attention to these less obvious risks can help us stay ahead of what we never saw coming.
