Ever since prominent financier Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his jail cell in 2019, the American public has been left with more questions than answers. That is, until 5 days ago, when the Department of Justice released a memo that has irreversibly changed the way Americans feel about their government.

Epstein quickly became successful in investment banking, acquiring clients worth more than $1 billion at his firm. While he was obtaining estates in multiple countries, he was also making valuable connections with some of the most wealthy, powerful people in the world–including President Donald Trump himself.

Rumors of Epstein’s secret life began to catch fire in 2005 when underage girls accused him of inappropriate and illegal behavior towards them. Years later, grand jury testimony revealed Epstein’s crimes.
Despite the heinous accusations, Epstein emerged pretty much unscathed except for having to serve 13 months in prison.
Later, more women accused Epstein of abusing them. These serious reports led the Justice Department to launch another investigation into Epstein. This investigation got Epstein indicted on a few charges, which he pleaded not guilty to. However, he died before his sentence was decided.
You may be wondering: How did he die? Debatable.

The Controversy Around Epstein’s Death
In 2019, Epstein was found dead in his jail cell. The cause of death was ruled to be suicide.
However, the public began to suspect that there was more to the story. A conspiracy theory emerged that some other powerful figures had killed him in an effort to prevent any incriminating information on them being leaked. This theory was supported by Epstein’s autopsy, which revealed that his cause of death may have been strangulation.
The most popular theory has been that Epstein’s death is a government cover-up because Epstein was a "spy for unknown government agencies." Another theory that arose is that Epstein had a “client list” of people who helped him abuse underage girls and was used as blackmail.

A report from a Justice Department official concluded that there was no evidence that contradicted the fact that Epstein died by suicide. Yet the conspiracy theories, often pushed by Republican figures–including FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino–continued to stir drama and division among the public.
On July 7th, the Justice Department and the FBI released a memo claiming that they had found no evidence that Epstein had any sort of “client list” that popular conspiracies suggested existed. They also released 10 hours of security footage of Epstein’s jail cell that shows nobody entered Epstein’s cell the day that he died. However, people noticed that the footage has a minute and two seconds missing from it just before midnight.
When asked about that missing minute, Attorney General Pam Bondi and President Trump tried to evade the question, but eventually Bondi said that it is because the camera system is old (from 1999), it has a minute missing every night as it resets. Some people have taken this as a sufficient answer, while others have not.

MAGA supporters have felt indignant towards the conclusions of this memo, especially because during Trump’s campaign, he promised he would release more government files on the Epstein case. This memo felt like somewhat of a letdown as it didn’t implicate other high-profile people or prove that Epstein was killed–instead, it fueled rage and suspicion among some of Trump’s closest allies.
A Crisis of Trust in the Government
Social media has not held back on government officials, criticizing the government as a whole and even pressuring some people to resign altogether.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has received a lot of online backlash because of something she said in an interview on Fox News in February. In this interview, she said that Epstein’s client list was on her desk to be reviewed. Now that the government has asserted that there is no such list, the media is accusing Bondi of lying. Not only that, but some are pointing out that Epstein’s atrocious crimes happened under her watch when she was the Attorney General of Florida.
Now, Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino has said that he is considering resigning due to the Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein files. Earlier this week, Bongino had a confrontation with Bondi over the Epstein case, which is just one instance of the ongoing clash between the FBI and the Justice Department over the Epstein files.

This confrontation occurred during a meeting where Bongino and Patel were confronted about whether they had leaked a story that claimed the FBI was prevented from releasing more information on the Epstein case by the Department of Justice. Bongino denied this, but still remains uncertain about his future at the FBI.
And of course, Elon Musk had to spite Trump in some way, posting snarky comments towards him on X and a video of Trump at a party with Epstein with a raised eyebrow emoji. He even wrote that Trump is in the Epstein files.
Will We Ever Know the Truth?
What the Epstein case has really revealed is the precarious and weak relationship that the public has with the government. The hectic frenzy of conspiracy theories, finger-pointing, and outrage has exposed widespread distrust in the government. It has revealed that the public feels fundamentally unsure of and unprotected by the institutions in place to provide us with justice and safety.
So the questions remain: Did Epstein really die by suicide? Or was he silenced by those with something to lose? I guess we will never really know.
