Nicki Minaj and SZA Are Beefing—and It’s Getting Messy

Pop Culture

July 17, 2025

The world of hip-hop and R&B thrives on collaboration, creativity, and sometimes—conflict. But what happens when a feud seems to come out of nowhere and spirals into something unrecognizable? That’s exactly where we find ourselves with the ongoing tension between Nicki Minaj and SZA, a clash that began over vague tweets and escalated into a one-sided scorched-earth campaign.

And to be honest? It's becoming harder and harder to defend.

Where It Started: The Spark Before the Wildfire

The feud kicked off in mid-July 2025, when Nicki Minaj publicly accused Top Dawg Entertainment president Punch—SZA’s longtime manager—of online bullying. In a now-deleted post, Nicki claimed he attacked her on Twitter after she declined a business proposal. She posted screenshots and implied there was some behind-the-scenes tension.

Shortly after, SZA tweeted something that, under normal circumstances, would have probably gone unnoticed:

“Mercury retrograde got y’all wildin. Don’t take the bait lol silly goose.”

To most, this was just astrological musing. But to Nicki, it read like a subliminal jab.

That’s when things blew up.

The Tweets Heard ’Round the Timeline

Nicki, clearly fuming, took to social media with a barrage of insults—none subtle, none kind. She mocked SZA’s voice, saying it “sounded like a f–king dead dog,” and went after her appearance with the now-infamous jab:

“you look like you got stung by a f–king bee.”

Then came more cutting remarks:

“If your music disappeared tomorrow, the world wouldn’t even notice.”

“Draw your freckles back on, sis.”

“You need the deluxe re-release to break records. That’s not integrity.”

Nicki didn’t stop there. She pulled old tweets from SZA’s early Twitter days—posts that critiqued Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ciara, and Madonna—and framed them as proof of SZA’s hypocrisy or insecurity.

SZA, for her part, kept her cool. She denied the retrograde tweet was about Nicki at all. “I wasn’t even talking about anyone,” she wrote. But the real power in her response came from her refusal to get dragged down. She posted:

“I get bullied by millions online every day then step out on a packed stadium tour where ppl show me REAL love … I’m the most successful I ever been.”

And then, with a final shrug, she essentially left the chat:

“Back to being calm, shy, and meek. Paris, see y’all soon.”

Digging Deeper: Is There More to This?

It’s hard not to wonder—what is Nicki Minaj really angry about?

She’s had her share of public spats in the past: Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Remy Ma... the list goes on. But this one feels different. More unhinged.

More aggressive. And frankly, more unnecessary.

On paper, SZA isn’t a rival. She’s not in Nicki’s lane, stylistically or commercially. They’ve never exchanged public barbs before.

In fact, fans have long hoped for a collaboration. So why the sudden animosity?

Some believe Nicki’s frustrations stem from a deeper place—industry politics, perceived disloyalty, or behind-the-scenes drama we’ll never hear about. That could be true. The music industry isn’t sunshine and Spotify Wrapped parties. But even if she does have her reasons... why air it out like this?

The Public Reaction: A Shift in the Crowd

This time, the fans aren’t universally rallying behind Nicki.

Yes, her loyal “Barbz” showed up to defend her as always, but the wider reaction has been critical. Social media has called the attack “unwarranted,” “ugly,” and “insecure.” Music forums and fan accounts that once praised her unconditionally are beginning to show cracks in their support.

“I love Nicki, but this ain’t it,” one fan wrote under a now-viral tweet. “SZA didn’t deserve that. And dragging her over a misunderstanding feels... sad.”

Another put it more bluntly:

“Nicki’s legacy is taking hits every time she starts a new feud that makes no sense.”

My Take: It’s Getting Harder to Justify

I’ll be honest. I’ve defended Nicki Minaj in the past. Her talent is undeniable.

She broke down doors for women in rap. She changed the game. But something about the way she’s been handling her recent feuds makes that defense feel weaker each time.

Maybe she does have real, valid reasons to be upset. Maybe there’s a long history between her and SZA we don’t know about. But here’s the thing—when you attack someone’s voice, appearance, and worth just to settle a personal score, that’s not empowerment. That’s cruelty.

This isn’t the “Queen of Rap” clapping back at a competitor. It’s a global superstar punching down at an artist who didn’t pick a fight in the first place.

At some point, legacy matters more than petty wins. And right now, Nicki’s is looking less like a crown and more like a cautionary tale.
