Nicki Minaj Vs SZA Feud: What's Happening, and Who Is Right and Who Is Wrong?

Pop Culture

July 20, 2025

It's about time we have something spicy to watch for the summer.

On July 15th, 2025, a major feud between 5-time Grammy-winning R&B singer SZA, 35, and longtime iconic female rapper Nicki Minaj, 42, started with a clash of tweets coming from Minaj's side. The feud initially started between Minaj and Top Dawg Entertainment President and SZA's former manager, Terrence "Punch" Henderson. Minaj had accused Punch of harassing her and lying to her.

As per a tweet on the Twitter/X platform made by Minaj herself, she wrote:

lol. Yall remember that man from tde who kept bullying me on twitter for no reason? We have the receipts. lol.

I never even responded to him. What was his name again, yall?

Im going to give him a nickname. Ima call him "Minus 30 million" from now on.

#JusticeforDemoree

Who is this "Demoree" woman, you may ask? Well, this situation has nothing to do with Punch, but it does include 24-time Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z and his business partner at Roc Nation, Desiree Perez. Minaj has accused Perez of "swatting" her home and alleged that Jay-Z owes her about $100-$200 million. That's not even all the tea. Demoree Hadley, who is the daughter of Perez, had announced that she is seeking legal action against her mother for sending her to a psychiatric facility for two weeks for no legitimate reason. Minaj steps into the drama and advocates for Hadley and the consequences for Perez. This all happened a few weeks before the Minaj-SZA beef.

Back on the topic, the abundance of tweets by Minaj specifically targeting Punch led to SZA making a post that was erroneously taken as a diss by Minaj, starting the whole feud. SZA had made the Twitter/X post the same day Minaj was targeting Punch that stated:

Mercury retrograde .. don't take the bait lol silly goose.

However, by the time this tweet was written and posted, Mercury Retrograde didn't start until two days later and is in effect now until August 10th. The "Barbz," who are Minaj's loyal and somewhat crazy fans, clapped back at SZA in honor of Minaj. Minaj herself did the same by tweeting:

Go draw your freckles back on bookie

#JusticeForDemoree #DepositionPerez

Liar liar pants on fire.

Sounding like a fking dead dog.

In response, SZA wrote:

I don"t give a f-ck bout none of that weird sh-t you popping.

The response has garnered over 261k+ likes and 29M views, doing more numbers than Minaj's original tweet. Being completely unbothered by Minaj's tweet, SZA tweets:

"Lmao lemme go back to being calm shy and meek. Yall have blessed night! See you tomorrow for night 2 Paris!!

The "night 2 Paris" is referring to the ongoing Grand National Tour featuring Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Minaj responds to the tweet and SZA's response, saying:

Shutup ugly

#JusticeForDemoree

I'm in a meeting so idk if u was still talking [censored] or no so if you didn't I'll delete later. H--

She also unleashes another flurry of tweets at SZA, including a tweet that is referring to her as "fat chubby and skinny @ at the same d-n time." In another tweet, Minaj lauds her achievements as a comeback to SZA, says that the music industry would not miss her, and compares her stadium tour numbers and streaming numbers to her SZA's numbers.

SZA denies her Mercury Retrograde tweet being about Nicki in another tweet that states:

I wasn't even talking about or to I had just got off stage talkin bout retrograde. @'d ME. The F-K YES IM MAD NOW DO YOU NEED THAT!??

How does This Feud Remind Us of February 2024?

This is not Minaj's first rodeo, I can tell you that. Minaj has been in many public feuds with other iconic artists such as SZA, Remy Ma, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, Cardi B, and, most notably, Megan Thee Stallion. Minaj and Megan's relationship hit the rocks in February 2024 when The Stallion released a song called "HISS" that was criticized by Minaj and her fans due to the lyric "These h-es don't be mad at Megan; these h-es are mad at Megan's Law." Megan's Law is an official law requiring authorities to make information available to the public about registered offenders and their names, addresses, etc. When that lyric was heard, it was unclear who she was referring to, but many have speculated that it was referring to Kenneth Petty, who is Minaj's husband and father of her son, "Papa Bear." Petty has an extensive history of r-e and sexual assault and has been under the law's eye for a while.

A few days later, Minaj disses back at Megan with a track called "Big Foot," which could be seen as a comeback due to either Megan's tall height or her foot injury from her getting shot back in 2020.

There is certainly a pattern in the way Minaj has handled feuds with SZA and Megan Thee Stallion, and that is by constantly tweeting hurtful jabs at the artists, downplaying their achievements, misunderstanding their motives, and sending her extremely loyal fans after the artists and their fanbases.

The Final Question: Who is Right and Who is Wrong

Considering both of their impact on music and the world and the feud still ongoing, it is indefinitely hard to determine a verdict. However, I would say that SZA is in the lead, as she remains content, unbothered, and booked with Kendrick Lamar's ongoing tour.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nicki Minaj as much as any other person would, and her talent, legacy, and achievements are something that we will never see from a female rapper for the next million years. But instead of taking the time to process and understand SZA's motives and having a proper conversation with SZA, she proceeds to mindlessly rant on Twitter/X, destroy sacred relationships, and make herself look more like the villain rather than the icon that 8-year-olds and teenagers look up to.
