Celebrity Feuds: Why Are We Pitting Women Against Each Other?

Pop Culture

Sat, July 13

Whether it's Katy Perry and Taylor Swift or Cardi B and Nicki Minaj, the internet has fostered a toxic trend of pitting successful women against each other. Although we have the phrase "girls support girls," we often stray from this when discussing relationships between female celebrities.

You have each other's backs among friends, but what if you all became famous? What if net worth, fans, and overall popularity came into the picture? As a celebrity, this becomes the reality.

Hailey Bieber vs Selena Gomez

About a year ago, when TikTok was raging over the "beef" between Hailey Beiber and Selena Gomez, the threats directed at Hailey were uncalled for. It escalated to the point where Selena had to post a story on Instagram stating, "This isn't what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying."

People across several social media platforms created animosity between the two celebrities based on pictures from the internet. We assumed the worst from them, but those situations were likely taken out of context. While there may have been resentment between them, it isn't the internet's place to make conclusions. Social media is a place where we can connect with different types of people from across the globe, and as Hailey said, "Moments like this only create extreme division instead of bringing people together."

Cardi B vs Nicki Minaj

It all started when Cardi released her song "Bodak Yellow." The hype and popularity the song received from fans led to it becoming the first solo female rap artist's song to be number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Nicki had been attempting this for the past decade but never achieved it, and her fandom, Barbz, did not take this lightly. They started attacking Cardi for "taking" the spot Nicki had been striving for, feeling that Cardi was overshadowing Nicki. Or maybe they just wanted to start an argument; either way, they got what they wanted.

What ultimately broke the tight bond between the two was when Migos added Cardi to their song without consulting Nicki. Later, when Nicki was promoting her album "Queen" in interviews, she openly attacked Cardi. Eventually, the beef faded, but what essentially created the tension between the two was when fans got involved. The aftermath included hostility not only among the celebrities themselves but also among their fan bases.

Katy Perry vs Taylor Swift

Miscommunication is the cause of many problems in relationships today, and this beef is no exception. When Taylor released her song “Bad Blood,” she said that the song wasn't about an ex but someone else in the music industry. This caused rumors to spread online that it was about Katy Perry.

When Nicki made a general comment about MTV Music Award nominations, Taylor took it personally. She stated, "I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other.

Maybe one of the men took your slot." Nicki later stated it wasn't targeted towards her. Interestingly, during this confusion, Katy Perry stated online, "Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the takedown of a woman..." without mentioning Taylor's name.

Taylor and Katy eventually cleared the beef revolving around the song, but it's obvious this started from rumors on the internet and grew into something more serious.

But why?

Honestly, who knows? The three feuds mentioned in this article were all basically the outcome of people from the internet making something out of nothing. Whether it's the internet craving drama or sensationalism, creating this toxic competition among successful women hinders the ability for collaboration and the mix of different styles in pop culture today.

However, the question isn't why but who. Who initiates the feuds? Well, it's us.
