New to Skincare? Here's What You Need to Know!

Beauty & Style

April 18, 2023

Skincare has been trending for years now on almost all social media platforms, and has become quite the celebrity amongst teens and young adults. However, with the endless varieties of skincare products that are constantly being promoted online - it's certainly not uncommon for young teens (and even adults!) - who are new to the world of skincare - to get a little intimidated or confused at first. And while lathering your face with fancy products and religiously following a 10-step skin care regimen (like most Tiktok and Instagram influencers seem to do) may be your first thought for achieving a clear and glowing complexion, you don't actually need it to look after your skin (surprise, surprise!).

If you're new to skincare and are looking to achieve radiant, healthy-looking skin without the usual fuss - you've come to the right place. From creating a basic skincare routine (which, I promise, does not consist of a million steps) to knowing what ingredients are best suited for your skin - this beginner's guide has got your face covered!

Why You Should Care About Skincare

If you're new to skincare, you must be wondering: what's all the fuss about looking after your skin? Does it really matter that much?!

Well, just like how it's important to look after and nourish the rest of your body, it's important to look after and care for your skin, too. Especially, as it is (for most people) prone to being affected by weather conditions, hormones and our overall diet. For this reason, good skincare is important at any age to clear our pores from the dirt, bacteria and other environmental pollutants that our skin comes in contact with, every single time we step out that door.

By having a finely-tuned skincare routine that works, we can also reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and sun damage, while effectively managing minor skin inconveniences, such as dryness or oiliness. Having a consistent skincare routine can even offer some mental benefits, too - helping us to build healthier habits and feel a sense of orderliness in our lives.

However, there are some things that you'll need to know before establishing a skincare routine that works for you. And that starts with figuring out what skin type you have.

Identifying Your Skin Type

Before you jump into creating a skincare routine, it is useful to first figure out what type of skin you have. An easy way to do so is by washing your face with a gentle cleanser, patting it dry and waiting thirty minutes. After the thirty minutes, ask yourself:

Does your skin look shiny and still feel greasy? Perhaps it feels dry and tight? Or maybe it just feels light and comfortable?

Identifying and learning more about your skin will certainly allow you to steer towards products that will manage your skin effectively and address any specific needs (such as, using extra moisturizing products for drier skin).

Here are the main indicators to look out for when analyzing your skin type:

  • Oily Skin - This skin type is infamous for its excess production of sebum that may cause the face to appear shiny and feel greasy - especially around the T-zone (forehead, chin, nose and chin). Oily skin is usually prone to enlarged pores, blackheads and whiteheads, which is why it is important to choose suitable face products (eg: gentle cleansers) that will keep your skin healthy, without clogging any pores.

  • Dry Skin - Dry skin is essentially the opposite of oily skin. It tends to produce fewer natural oils than other skin types and can cause your face to feel tight, rough or flaky. In addition, those with dry skin may experience itchiness and certain skin conditions like eczema. A skincare routine for dry skin should include gentle, hydrating products that will maintain the moisture-balance in the skin.

  • Combination Skin - A combination of dry and oily skin. For most with combination skin, the T-zone is commonly oily, while the cheeks are either dry or normal. Variations are not uncommon in this skin type, so it is important to ensure proper care during the changing seasons, different weather conditions and hormone fluctuations. With combination skin, you should practice washing and moisturizing your face with effective and hydrating products that will help target the oiliness and dryness of the skin.

  • Normal/Balanced Skin - If the skin characteristics mentioned above seem quite foreign to you, there may be a chance you have normal/balanced skin (lucky you!!). Normal skin is quite self-explanatory - it is neither too dry, nor too oily. It features skin that is smooth and less prone to acne breakouts, flakiness and greasiness than other skin types.

However, this doesn't mean you shouldn't bother with skincare! This skin type still requires adequate care to look and feel its best.

  • Sensitive Skin - Sensitive skin can also come along with oily skin, dry skin and normal skin, too. Regardless, if you have sensitive skin, you may have experienced itchiness, frequent irritation that may have been triggered by certain ingredients or fragrances, and dryness. With sensitive skin, it is key to determining what triggers the sensitivity and keep an eye out to avoid them.

Creating A Basic Skincare Routine

As mentioned before, a skincare routine does not have to include a million products or steps to actually be effective.

Note: However, if you have specific skin concerns, please speak with your healthcare provider or a dermatologist regarding your treatment options. They will inform you of what skincare products and acne treatment products would be best suited for your skin.

Here are some products you should definitely consider including in your skincare routine:

1. Cleanser:

Cleansers are designed to remove impurities, bacteria, dirt, makeup and any skin irritants, which is exactly why they are a must in everyone's daily skincare. This CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a personal favourite of mine. It is an effective and affordable cleanser that is directed towards those with normal to dry skin, and works to hydrate and restore the skin's natural protective barrier - all without stripping the skin of its natural oils.

Other effective cleansers from this brand: Foaming Facial Cleanser and Acne Control Cleanser.

2. Serum:

While serum can't replace moisturizer, it can definitely be used to provide your skin with extra vitamins and nutrients, brighten and hydrate your skin, and to manage specific skin concerns (like acne). This Niacinamide + Zinc Ordinary serum is designed to support blemish-prone skin and target skin congestion, dullness, and dryness. Suited for all skin types, this lightweight serum is a great addition to creating an effective skincare routine.

3. Moisturizer

Moisturizer is probably one of the most important steps in skincare. It reduces the chances of developing extreme dryness and oiliness in your skin, and maintains your skin's protective barrier. It is useful in fighting acne, slowing down signs of aging and soothing sensitive skin. If you're looking for a moisturizer that'll keep your skin feeling hydrated and plump during the day, try this non-comedogenic CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion - ideal for all skin types.

4. SPF

Last, but definitely not least, an SPF is your easiest way to ensure that your skin is protected from the sun's damaging rays (that do a lot more harm to your skin than you may think). From preventing premature aging, skin cancer, sunburns and even darkening of acne scars - sunscreen is essential for everyone. Neutrogena's Hydro Boost Water Gel SPF 50 Lotion has got you covered with its super lightweight and non-greasy formula that won't clog your pores, making it ideal for daily use.

Active Ingredients - Knowing What Works For You

Active ingredients are chemicals in face care products that are used to treat specific skin concerns, like persistent acne. Picking the right active ingredients will allow you to address and treat your skin concerns better.

For oily skin, it is recommended you purchase products containing:

  • Niacinamide (antioxidant)
  • Salicylic acid (chemical exfoliant)
  • Hyaluronic acid (for hydration)

For dry skin, it is recommended you purchase products containing:

  • Hyaluronic acid (for hydration)
  • Ceramides (improves hydration levels)
  • Squalene (light moisturizing oil)

For sensitive skin, it is recommended you purchase products containing:

  • Lactic acid (gentle chemical exfoliant)
  • Hyaluronic acid (for hydration)
  • Mandelic acid (gentle AHA)

8 Common Skincare Mistakes To Avoid

To finish off, here are some common skincare mistakes to avoid:

1. Not moisturizing your face just because you have oily skin (this will only cause your skin to produce more oil to make up for the lack of moisture)

2. Not wearing sunscreen

3. Constantly touching your face without clean hands (I know it's tempting, but trust me, it's not worth the acne)

4. Having a high sugar diet

5. Using products with fragrances on your skin (can cause irritation)

6. Going to bed with make-up

7. Using a skincare product just because it is trendy (what may work for others, may not work for you)

8. Not drinking enough water or getting in enough exercise

And there you have it! Achieving healthy, beautiful skin is just one step away! With the right skincare routine, you can ensure your skin is protected, hydrated and properly cared for.

Feel free to experiment with different products designed for your skin type to find what works for you. Just make sure to give your skin time to adjust to new products, and always remember - less is more!
