How to Make Fall Feel Like You're in Gilmore Girls

Aesthetics & Trends

November 29, 2025

Oh, fall! My favorite time of year is when my tights and scarves reappear from the depths of my closet, and my sugar levels skyrocket from drinking too many overpriced beverages. Isn't it delightful?

Cozy is back in fashion, and with it one of my all-time favorite TV shows: Gilmore Girls. The sweetheart of the season for decades, Rory and Lorelai are true style icons of the -er months. But how can we achieve the height of this autumnal aesthetic even without being in a lovely little town called Stars Hollow?

Well, grab your blanket, press play on “Where You Lead I Will Follow,” and sip your coffee, because now I'm going to teach you how to enjoy the best that fall has to offer, at least in terms of aesthetics.

Friday Night Dinners, Yale Daily News, and Mornings at the Independence Inn—The Magic of a Nice Outfit

First things first. At the start of every season, I like to do a big clean-out of my wardrobe. That's when I decide on my color palette and plan the outfits I'll be wearing over the next few months. The clothes worn by our beloved Lorelais are perfect inspiration for this season.

Graphic tees are a real ace (get the reference?) in the Gilmore wardrobe. Pure Y2K aesthetic, it can be a band tee or one with a funny phrase like “reading is sexy” that Rory wears in episode 14 in season 5.

For formal occasions, Friday dresses are ideal. Knee-length, silk, velvet, linen, floral prints, and delicate lace. The dinner outfits were the peak of subtlety for mother and daughter, and elegant enough to please Emily Gilmore's refined taste—at least most of the time. If you want something more covered up, go for a matching cardigan.

The Gilmores are very particular about pants: if you're wearing jeans, go for flares, skinny jeans, and low-rise. For other fabrics, go for black tailored pants, and if you're feeling daring, a Juicy Couture sweatshirt can help you channel your inner Lorelai.

Skirts are also a great idea for achieving the Gilmore style. My favorites are in season 1 (for Lorelai) and season 6 (for Rory). Patterned miniskirts or neutral and floral midi skirts are the way to go.

The secret to a good look is clear: matching colors, casual style, but one item that stands out. It could be a fun blouse, knee-high boots, colorful scarves, printed coats, or simply something with a fun shape.

Take the Quiz: Which Fall Activity Should You Try Next?

Fall is full of exciting activities to match your vibe! This quiz will help you discover the perfect way to enjoy the season.

“You've never seen Casablanca? Are you kidding?”—A Good Movie to Lift Your Spirits

West Side Story. Sixteen Candles. Citizen Kane.

Rosemary's Baby. There are so many movies mentioned throughout the series that if I were to list them all, it would take much more than one line.

Practically every night, Lorelai and Rory watch something; they often opt for an old-school classic or a black and white from the jazz era.

Some of my favorites from the season are Twilight, Practical Magic, Dead Poets Society, and basically all of Wes Anderson's movies. As for the series, I recently watched Twin Peaks and fell in love with it, but it has become a tradition for me to watch The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina every early fall, especially the first season. I think these two sum up that spooky and vintage fall energy well. And an animation that enchanted me this fall was Haunted Hotel, fresh out of Netflix and already guaranteed a second season.

The point of movie night isn't just the movies, but the whole experience. Prepare some yummy snacks, or just a few leftovers, grab a warm blanket, and make room on the couch for your favorite person. Take this moment to enjoy all the comfort and cozy spirit of the season.

“You like Smashing Pumpkins and I don't.” - Rory

“But that's only because you're close-minded and blind.” - Lane

Music is the backbone of Gilmore Girls. It's on T-shirts, in references, in the background of scenes... Rory and Lorelai have a soundtrack for every situation. And so do the fans!

Choose—or create—your perfect fall playlist. If you decide on the first one, on Spotify, you can find a multitude of playlists inspired by the series or simply in the same early 2000s fall mood. If you're more old-fashioned, like myself, and decide to make your own playlist, I recommend a good amount of rock and punk (Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, [censored] Pistols, The Offspring, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers), indie (Fiona Apple, Mazzy Star, The Cranberries), and, of course, a little Frank Sinatra.

Remember that your playlist is your fall soundtrack and will follow you through all your adventures this season, so choose wisely.

But Isn't It Already November? Quiet! Fall Only Ends When the Winter Solstice Arrives.

To wrap up, I'll give you a little tip of mine for a truly romanticized fall: create a character. Decide what your fall aesthetic will be, the style of clothes, movies, music, and even activities you'll do.

Last year, my theme was Twilight. I read all the books in the saga, wore clothes and hairstyles inspired by Bella, watched the movie, and got the most out of Hoa Hoa Hoa. This year, it's Gilmore Girls, so put your coffee in a mug and get ready for this journey with the smell of cinnamon and pumpkin cookies!
