How To Be Just As Bold as The Women From 'The Bold Type'

Personal Growth

August 27, 2019

The Bold Type premiered on Freeform (formerly known as ABC Family) in June of 2017 and now has three full seasons, with the fourth season coming out in 2020. The show is about three millennial best friends who work at Scarlett Magazine in New York. They juggle their careers, their relationships, and growing as female boss babes. These three best friends working at Scarlett are total goals!

  • Jane Sloan: a new writer for the .com and print magazine who wears her heart on her sleeve
  • Kat Edison: social media director of Scarlett, the youngest to ever hold that title and amazing all-around leads that department
  • Sutton Brady: started as an assistant but decides to pursue her dreams of being more involved with Scarlett in fashion

These three women make up the female leads of The Bold Type. So let's dive into how to Power Pose and embrace your inner bold type.

Minor spoilers ahead

Kat Edison played by Aisha Dee, Jane Sloan played by Katie Stevens, Sutton Brady played by Meghann Fahy, and Jacqueline Carlyle played by Melora Hardin

Be Inspired by Other Strong Women

Connecting with characters like the strong female-empowering leads in The Bold Type is important for any viewer because the show gives insight into being more understanding, loving what you do, and realizing that no one has to go through tough times in life alone.

Early on in the show, Kat starts to question her sexuality and what it means to find yourself before giving your all to someone else. Jane, I would say the most driven by what her heart tells her and her emotions, goes through so many personal ups and downs and huge learning curves about how the world around us keeps going. Having each other has helped them be able to overcome obstacles and come to terms with what's going on in their lives. Viewers can connect with all of these different perspectives.

Thrive in Your Successes and Get Back Up From Downfalls

Kat not only is the youngest Social Media Director Scarlett has ever seen, but she's also the first female black head of a department who also decides to run for Mayor in Season 3. She wants to take a risk on something she is so passionate about.

In Season 2, Jane took a risk in following a different path with her career in journalism and writing. Sutton took a risk to follow her dream rather than just find something with the degree she did have, which isn't a bad thing. They work under Jacqueline Carlyle, editor-in-chief of the magazine inspired by Cosmopolitan Magazine's Joanna Coles, who is an amazing mentor to all the girls and has so much experience in the industry, with life, and communicating.

From Jacqueline, these three friends have learned to be proud of their successes and for each other as well as how to accept difficulty, downfalls, and get up with grace and put the right foot forward. All of us can be our own Jacqueline and always try our power moves even if it means we fail and have to move on.

Stand Up For What You Believe in

What's so great about this show is it has dynamic characters that sometimes surprise us because the writers spend time creating a climate similar to ours now that surrounds the show to incorporate how these women would face challenges that we see or read about now.

Kat is definitely the strong character, sometimes too strong-headed, that stands up 101% of the time for whatever she believes in. She knows how to use social media to her advantage to help people spread messages about positive ways to get involved in communities and how she represents Scarlett to do these things as well.

If you feel like you don't know how to get involved, or want to find things you are passionate about, Kat is someone to be inspired by. Sutton's character believes in herself 1000% and is one of the most driven characters to follow her dreams and knows what she wants. We all can embrace how to follow our passions, help people, and get involved.

The World is Yours

Sometimes being selfish helps you be more generous and so sometimes the world can revolve around you. You want to find a balance between your happiness and others' happiness. You want to push past your limits and get that job, position, whatever you want might as well go for it.

The world is full of opportunities that we can all chase! Sutton gets to experience Paris Fashion Week and be apart of some of the fashion world's creme de la creme. Jane gets to write about so many stories and grow as a writer! The world is at our fingertips and we can definitely make the world our own.

Friendships Can Last A Lifetime

As we go through the struggles and successes of our lives it'd be great to share it with friends we care about a lot. Friends that help you become a better you, have fun with you, laugh with you, cry with you, and love the world with you.

That is why Sutton, Jane, and Kat are best friend goals! Supporting each other, sharing advice, even being real with each other because we know not everything is crystal clear happy go lucky all the time. Hearing the reality and truth of our best friends shows growth and genuine love because we want what's best for each other. Sometimes friendships fade, but sometimes they're magical and make up some of the best times of our lives and they can last forever.

Being bold and true to ourselves can be scary, but it's great to have shows like this help us put into perspective how we can be a bit bolder and live our best lives.
