November 27, 2022

Movies are one of the most beloved art forms of the 21st century. With the coming onslaught of 2023, 2023 cinema is something we all need to be prepared for. With both sequels and anticipated stand-alones coming our way, it's time to plan out our theater visits.

1. Creed 3 (March)

Creed 3 is the third installment of the Rocky franchise's spinoff focused on Adonis Creed, the son of a major character in the original. This film stars a highly acclaimed actor, Michael B. Jordan.

It's his directorial debut, taking the reigns from Ryan Coogler, the director of the past two. The Creed franchise has featured popular boxing personnel, such as Andre Ward and Stitch, which makes the franchise all the more real. The plot line of the new movie follows Adonis' boxing conflict with an old friend, who was recently released from prison.

Will Adonis follow in the footsteps of his father? Or will he surpass the rumors surrounding his surname?

(Also, you should definitely watch the Rocky movies, they are worth it!)

2. Scream 6 (March)

Ghostface returns, but to a new city, New York. The follow-up to January's horror flick (Scream) follows 4 survivors of the most recent Ghostfaces. Neve Campbell, the original Final Girl of the series, isn't returning for the 6th film, but there are two reoccurring cast members making an appearance - Courtney Cox (Scream 1996) and Hayden Panettiere (Scream 4).

The excitement for the awaited film is aided by the fact that no trailers have been released, though the release date is coming upon us. The new chapter in Scream is something to be anticipated, but remember not to get too attached to anyone.

3. John Wick 4 (March)

Keanu Reeves returns for the 4th time as the infamous assassin John Wick. Always known to deliver incredible action sequences, John Wick 4 is a film waiting to blow everyone's minds. Pushed back 2 years due to the global pandemic, John Wick 4 has been awaited by action lovers everywhere. While not much has been revealed about the plot, director Chad Stahelski has assured fans that the impactful events will absolutely fulfill expectations.

4. The Super Mario Bros. (April)

With a star-studded cast (Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor Joy, Seth Rogan, Jack Black, and more) The Super Mario Bros. takes a new stand on the video game franchise and gives a new perspective to the characters. The trailer showcases a beautifully animated world, and truly brings the universe to life.

All our beloved characters will join each other on a quest to save Princess Peach (Anya Taylor Joy). Bringing a new facet to our childhood, The Super Mario Bros. will bring smiles to our faces in the first scenes.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy VOL 3 (May)

The 3rd segment of the precious Guardians of the Galaxy films is a promising movie for the Marvel Franchise. Everyone knows how well-produced Marvel movies are, and GOTG 3 will prove no different. Peter Quill must recover from the loss of Gamora in order to unite the galaxy against a new foe.

The mesmerizing scenes of the first two movies set a precedent for the third movie, which critics anticipate to meet and excel past. We can only hope for the best, with the 4th generation of Marvel movies coming to an end.

6. Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse (June)

Arguably one of the most well-executed Marvel movies, Into The Spider Verse shocked the world with its creativity and exploration of multifaceted characters, not to mention its magnificent animation. The sequel, coming in June, is expected to do the same thing.

With an electric take on the different versions of Spiderman, Across the Spider Verse is marked up to be one of the highest-quality animation movies, just by the trailers alone. Miles Morales returns to the big screen to millions of awaiting viewers and is likely to meet expectations once again.

7. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 (July)

Yes, you read that correctly... Part 1. I don't know how many parts of the upcoming installment of Mission Impossible are, but I can tell you that it will be more heart-racing than ever. With improved technology and stunts, Dead Reckoning looks to be the most immersive and advanced Mission Impossible yet. Mission Impossible movies are heart-racing, with its action scenes being some of the most nerve-racking scenes I've ever seen.

With Tom Cruise's return to the series, people everywhere will line up to see this one, so be hasty when getting there for opening night. Don't miss out.

8. The Marvels (July)

2023 seems to be Marvel's year, with July marking Brie Larson's Captain Marvel's return. Joined by Ms. Marvel and the new hero of the MCU, Spectrum, Captain Marvel must find a way to work with her counterparts as the result of an eerie trend.

Every time one uses their power, they swap places with another Marvel. There are many theories surfacing the internet speculating where the plot will go, but nonetheless, The Marvels is the perfect summer movie for teenagers.

9. Barbie (July)

Director Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) returns with an interesting take on the iconic blonde, Barbie. Led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken respectively, Barbie is exiled from Barbieland, and makes her debut in "the real world". Robbie and Gosling are joined by a plethora of other talented actors, such as Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Micheal Cera, and Issa Rae. With a bumble-gum pink color palette and Gerwig's genius, Barbie is sure to be phenomenal.

10. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom (December)

It looks like 2023 is not only a big year for Marvel superheroes, but for DC as well. Jason Momoa returns as Aquaman after years, and Ben Affleck returns as Batman. The only thing about the plot that was released is that Aquaman makes an untraditional alliance in order to save his homeland, Atlantis.

This adds to the mystery of the film, with many other aspects up for debate, such as the role of Mera and Affleck's return. Though far away, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is a wonderful way to end the year.

2023 and its respective movies are upon us, and the prospects don't disappoint. Of course, there are other movies to look out for, but these 10 are at the top of the list, at least for me. So, if you choose to see any of these (or any movie in general), I hope you enjoy! Always remember to look up content warnings before watching!
