Hyram Yarbro is a skin care specialist/content creator, known for his passion for skincare. If you're like me, you spend a lot of time on TikTok have come likely across some of his videos. His content ranges from skincare tips, product suggestions, reactions, and other general skincare information. The Teen Magazine had a chance to talk to him about how he began creating content, the struggles he has faced along the way, and his future goals, among other topics.

What made you want to start a YouTube channel?

When I worked in cosmetic sales I saw people spend upwards of $1000+ for a single skincare product, and I wanted to know what made those products so special. I quickly figured out that not only were the products not worth it, but they were also formulated with irritating and low-quality ingredients. I started my YouTube channel to help people learn about the basics of skincare and save money.

When did you first start gaining fame?

I would say the beginning of 2020- I hit 100K followers on YouTube at the end of 2019 and gained over 500K subscribers in January. It’s just been a crazy ride since then!

What are some difficulties you have faced along the way?

Staying consistent and continually uploading when I wasn’t growing and working 50+ hours per week at my jobs was definitely difficult, as I didn’t have the online growth to motivate myself to keep moving forward. But I kept at it, got very little sleep, and kept pushing!

What are the pros and cons of being a content creator/social media influencer?

I’d say the biggest pros are getting to meet people in public and seeing skin transformations online- knowing I was able to make a small positive impact in their lives makes me so happy. The biggest con is the constant stream of hate, but you grow stronger because of it!

How do you deal with hate/negativity?

It doesn’t bother me too much, as hate comments are more of a reflection of their negative worldview and not my actions. So long as I’m being ethical and helping people, I don’t think about it. But every once in a while when I see hate forums or blogs written about how terrible of a person I am, I’m tempted to fire back!

What is the biggest lesson you've learned so far?

To be completely different and unapologetic. Create content that is nothing like what you’ve seen before, and be confident in your personality.

What are your future goals?

I really want to focus on global philanthropy, starting non-profits, and traveling the world helping organizations- be more impactful in helping others get access to basic rights.

Who do you look up to? Who inspires you?

Ooh.. so many people. I’d say Immaculle Ilibagiza, a survivor from the Rwandan [censored]. Emma Watson and Malala Yousafzai are others I look up to.

What is it like being an inspiration to others?

Am I an inspiration to others? I guess I’ve never thought of myself in that way. I more so just focus on trying to improve myself every day, and I try to use my platform to talk about issues that are more important than skincare to help motivate people to create change as well!

Who would you like to collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with Simply Nailogical (Cristine) - she’s extremely humble, down to earth, and outspoken about important issues and I find myself agreeing with and relating to nearly everything she says.

What motivated you to start your second channel "Selfless"? What is it about?

Selfless is a channel focused on providing information about less known global issues involving poverty, environment, social issues, and providing viewers with ways to take immediate action. I’ve always been passionate about ensuring everyone has access to basic rights and education, and this is my way of trying to help!

What does a typical day in your week look like?

I typically wake up around 7 AM, I’ll work out until 9, and then answer emails until about 12. I’ll typically film 1-2 videos until 4 PM, and then spend the rest of the evening either editing videos or working on behind the scenes projects until about midnight when I go to bed.

How are you coping with the pandemic?

I’m extremely fortunate to still be working during the pandemic, and my life hasn’t changed too much as I already work from home. Thankfully it’s been extremely busy! No complaints whatsoever.

What advice do you have for readers who wish to pursue the same career path as you?

Find a passion or interest, see what other people are creating, and find a way to create content that provides value but is completely different and unique from everyone else. Stay steady and don’t give up when it feels like you’re failing!

If you had the world's attention for 1 minute, what would you say?

I would teach them the meaning of the word ‘empathy’, as that word has had significant value to my life. Tell people how to take on another’s feelings, put yourself in their shoes, and imagine their worldview- I think that message could really help make the world a better place.

If you could visit one planet, which one would it be?

I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’ve always had a fascination with Jupiter. I would want to explore the solar system’s biggest planet.

How would you spend 100 million dollars?

I would set up global micro-loan systems to provide communities with education, clean water, food, and economic opportunities to connect as many people as possible with basic rights.

The following questions are fan-based questions. I reached out to a couple of fans, and they formulated some questions for Hyram.

Why did you decide to move to Hawaii, and where did you grow up?-Georgia

I grew up in the tiny town of Paulden, Arizona and I moved to Hawaii about 5 years ago when I started college. I love Hawaii with my whole heart!

How did you get into skincare? What were the first lot of brands you used?-Abbie

The first skincare brand I regularly used was (I believe) First Aid Beauty, the Ultra Repair Cream. I started becoming interested in skin care when I was getting a lot of wrinkles on my face, and people started pointing them out. Once I realized skin care was actually effective at removing them, it became my passion.

Would you ever have seminars around the world? Where?-anonymous

Absolutely! Seminars would be amazing to do. I would love to do them in Africa, India, Southeast Asia, or South America. But anywhere would be great!
