BET Awards 2022: the Glitz and Glam of TV’s Black Excellence

Pop Culture

August 12, 2022

The BET Awards are one of pop culture’s biggest nights. This is a night where some of the world’s most renowned black actors, musicians, and philanthropists are praised and acknowledged for their accomplishments. The event reminds black children that they are capable of anything they set their minds to.

Empire actress Taraji P. Henson reprised her role as host from last year, leading the celebration of talent in music, television, film, and sports. It was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night, June 26th 2022.

Dressed in 14 different outfits, the Howard University alumni dazzled on the red carpet. However, she was not the only celebrity in attendance dressed to impress. Down below are 13 of my favorite looks from the red carpet.

The "About [censored] Time" singer rocked the red carpet in a ruffled navy dress that had a mid-thigh slit. Did I mention that the dress is a custom Gucci design? But of course, nothing less was expected from the performer. What a way to make a statement!

When I saw Taraji P Henson on the red carpet, one sentence automatically came to mind.

Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?

In this instance, these lyrics apply to Taraji P Henson. Not only did she make the night memorable with her excellent hosting skills, but with her outfits as well. Out of all 14 ensembles, this was my absolute favorite.

The Acrimony star donned a backless sequined dress that accentuated her figure and paired it with a waist-long sleek ponytail. She completed the look with a red lip and jewelry on her ear.

Marsai Martin

The YoungStars Award recipient lit up the red carpet, literally. Styled by Brion Jabbar, the actress and producer hit the red carpet in a spaghetti strap Dolce & Gabbana dress. Marsai kept her makeup simple with full lashes, bold black eyeliner, fluffy brows, and neutral lipstick. She looked like a million bucks!

Chloe Bailey

Sometimes a black dress means playing it safe, but Chloe Bailey took experimentation to the next level when she arrived on the red carpet at the 2022 BET Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The beautiful singer, one half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle, wore a sparkly sequin dress by Lebanese designer Nicolas Jebran. Her look featured long sleeves and carefully placed fabric across her chest. She completed the look with dramatic eyeliner, Colette jewelry, and a high ponytail.

Jazmine Sullivan

From Essence Fest to the NAACP Image Awards, Sullivan never failed to meet the assignment, and the BET Awards were no exception. She accepted her Best R&B/Pop Artist Award in a light blue pantsuit that showed off her beautiful body. The suit had feathers attached to the wrists and shins for a bit of dramatic flair. A gold necklace and a laid-back hair-do topped off this fashionable ensemble.

Janelle Monae

Alexandra Mandelkorn styled the American songwriter for the awards ceremony that evening. The sophisticated ensemble included a black velvet bralette with leather straps, a giant rose in the center, and a sheer black flowing skirt hooked onto the top. She completed the timeless look with a simple top knot.

Fireboy DML

The Nigerian Afrobeat singer, who also performed the hit song "Peru" at the event, drew attention by wearing a beige suit. The top part of the suit was unbuttoned, revealing that he only wore a silver chain underneath.

Saucy Santana

Santana looked stunning in a checkered yellow and green blazer dress. The singer wore neon boots with ombré cascading fur. Santana was styled by Law Roach (in Area Couture).

Tems

The Lagos native appeared on the red carpet in a little black number with a twist. This black gown had a thigh-high slit and seemed to wrap around Tems' waist. Similar to many celebrities on the red carpet, the songstress paired the look with a silver choker and some hand jewelry.

Kiandra Richardson

The "Home Is On The Way" singer strutted the red carpet in a sheer, crystal-embroidered gown with tulle trim. Silver was the name of the game in Richardson's jewelry. Her open-toed heels were silver, as well as her teardrop earrings.

Akira Akbar

Bel-Air actress Akira appeared on the red carpet in a navy blue one-shoulder Dior gown that kissed her black heels. This was a beautiful dress that had a sheer skirt. Her accessories included a gold chain and a handbag. She tied her knotless braids in a low ponytail and had one loose braid framing her face.

This look channeled the actress's inner Ashley and was beyond fresh!

A suit on a red carpet? Nothing unique. An aqua suit without a shirt?

Now that's a memorable outfit that's sure to leave people talking. The dancer strayed from the usual black tux normally seen on almost all male attendees. He was dressed in an aqua number and black metallic boots. To finish off, he accessorized with a few silver chains, some rings, and a bracelet.

Ella Mai

Ella Mai looked stunning in a mock-neck long-sleeve minidress with bedazzled tassels and shimmering accents on the front and back. The tassels and circled pattern on the outfit were reminiscent of 1920s flapper looks, but in a more toned-down and edgier way. Her ankle-strapped heels added a bit of sophistication but didn't take any attention away from her overall look. This look really focused on Mai's simplistic beauty.

Those are just a few of the looks seen on the red carpet from the BET Awards that I loved. To see all the red carpet looks, click this link. I hope you enjoyed this article! The attires ranged from haute couture to casually effortless, but I think audiences can agree that all the celebrities in attendance looked to die for!
