The story follows Mare Barrow who lives in a world where everyone either has red or silver blood. For the few Silvers, they run society from the Silver Palace with an iron fist, superpowers, and countless wealth.
However, the Kingdom of Norta is turned upside down when the royal family hosts a competition to find their next queen among the Silver families. Mare, a Red who gets a job working as a servant at the palace, unknowingly displays her supernatural powers during the Queenstrial much to the dismay of the royal family.
In an effort to cover up her superpowers, Mare is betrothed to the king's second son and is told to lie about being a Red for her own protection. As Mare is thrown into a world of betrayal, secrets, rebellions, and drama, she learns that more is at stake than she ever could have imagined.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

With the release of Netflix's Uglies, there is no better time to read (or reread) this classic dystopian from the early 2000's.
The plot follows Tally Youngblood who is eager to turn 16 and undergo her city's mandatory cosmetic surgery which will allow Tally to join her best friend Peris in New Pretty Town. However, before her surgery date Tally meet Shay, who is also soon to be 16 but is not as eager to join the carefree lifestyle of being a “Pretty.” Instead Shay tells Tally about a group of people who have escaped the surgery and created their own secret city led by their leader, David. Although Tally initial rejects Shay's offer, New Pretty Town's Special Circumstances gives Tally a choice: follow Shay beyond the Rusty Ruins and find this secret city or never join Peris and her friends at New Pretty Town.
Featuring multiple betrayals, questions of loyalty, and the classic dystopian plot structure, Uglies is definitely the book to add to you to-reads list.
