Actress Zendaya debuted a ring on her left ring finger at the Golden Globes on January 5, causing speculation about it being an engagment ring, given to her by her boyfriend and actor, Tom Holland. The couple first captured the hearts of fans when playing co-stars on Spider-Man. From being lovers on screen to off screen, this is a timeline of the young Hollywood stars' relationship.

2016: Tom Holland and Zendaya are cast as Peter Parker and MJ, respectively, in Marvel's 2016 Spider-Man. The first movie is Spider-Man: Homecoming which began filming and production in June 2016 and released July 2017.

2017: A source tells People magazine in July 2017 that the costars are together.

"They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man," says the source. "They've been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

Before the premiere of Spider-Man on July 7, Holland opened up about his friendship with Zendaya to People, saying, "We are like the best of friends. She’s so great and amazing. I’m a little worried [about dealing with fame … [but] Zendaya is super famous and she’s been through this and I just call her up and say, ‘How do I manage being famous?’ I’m very glad I have a friend like her.”

Later, they both denied dating rumors on X (formerly Twitter.)

Zendaya wrote to Holland, “Wait wait…my favorite is when it says we go on vacation together HA! I haven't been on a vacation in years! hbu?”

Holland responded, “Does the press tour count?”

In August of 2017, in an interview with Variety, Zendaya denied dating rumors again.

“We are friends,” she said. “He’s a great dude. He’s literally one of my best friends. This past how many months we’ve had to do press tours together. There’s very few people that will understand what that’s like at 20 years old.”

2018: The pair exchanged birthday wishes to each other on Instagram. In June, Zendaya posted a video of Holland fighting someone with a lightsaber, captioning the video, “Happy Birthday loser…”

In September, Holland posted a paparazzi photo of the two at a comic book store, standing next to a Spider-Man. He captioned it, “Me, myself and the birthday girl. Happy birthday mate- keep killing it and paving the way for the rest of us ♥️”

2019: In June, Holland denied dating rumors to ELLE in an interview, saying he is single and not romantically involved with anyone. He says he is “definitely a relationship person. I'm not the fleeting type at all; it's not my way of life.”

In August, paparazzi photos catch Zendaya and her Euphoria costar Jacob Elordi together on vacation in Greece. The paparazzi also caught Elordi giving Zendaya a kiss in New York in Febuary of 2020.

2020: Holland confirms his relationship with girlfriend Nadia Parkes on Instagram. They reportedly quarentined together during the early stages of the pandemic, according to Daily Mail.

2021: Paparazzi photos catch Zendaya and Holland kissing at a red light in Los Angeles in July.

Later, in September, on Instagram Holland posts a mirror selfie of the two on Spider-Man, with the caption, "My MJ, have the happiest of birthdays. Gimme a call when your up xxx".

In October, Holland again posts Zendaya to his Instagram. Its a photo of her on the red carpet for Dune, which Holland captioned with a hearts eye emoji.

In November, Holland told GQ, “One of the downsides of our fame is that privacy isn’t really in our control anymore, and a moment that you think is between two people that love each other very much is now a moment that is shared with the entire world. I’ve always been really adamant to keep my private life private, because I share so much of my life with the world anyway. We sort of felt robbed of our privacy.”

Zendaya shared a similar sentiment to E News, saying, "It [the paparazzi photo of them kissing] was quite strange and weird and confusing and invasive. The equal sentiment [we both share] is just that when you really love and care about somebody, some moments or things, you wish were your own.…I think loving someone is a sacred thing and a special thing and something that you want to deal with and go through and experience and enjoy amongst the two people that love each other.”

The pair continue to do press tours and photo calls together for their new movie Spider-Man: No Way Home, posing on the red carpet together multiple times. Zendaya then shares photos of Holland at two different ages on Instagram, with the caption, “My Spider-Man, I'm so proud of you, some things never change and good thing.”

2023: In 2022, they had been photographed on many dates and outings togeher. In 2023,people noticed Zendaya was wearing a ring with Hollands initials on it, and that Holland had been wearing pants with “Z” on the back pocket.

In June, he told the Hollywood Reporter, "Our relationship is something that we are incredibly protective of and we want to keep as sacred as possible. We don’t think that we owe it to anyone, it’s our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers.”

In July, Holland went on the podcast Smartless and spoke about his relationship. "I'm lucky that I have someone like Zendaya in my life. It's interesting being in a romantic relationship with someone that is in the same boat as you. You can share your experiences and all that sort of stuff — and that's worth its weight in gold.”

In Septemeber, Holland shared an Instagram story of Zendaya about to scuba dive, with the caption, “My birthday girl 😍."

2024: In January, Zendaya unfollowed everyone on Instagram, including Holland, leading people to think they had broken up. But Zendaya told TMZ they had “absolutely not” split.

In Febuary, Zendaya talked about her relationship with Holland. She was asked which Dune cast member had the most "rizz". “Rizz is short for charisma, right? Everybody’s kind of got their own.

I think someone who has beautiful charisma, not on the Dune cast, but I know personally, works for me, is Mr. Tom Holland. I’m more shy and kind of quiet, so it takes a little bit more to pull me out of my shell. But he’s great at just talking to people and getting to know people. You see him on talk shows and stuff like that. He’s just naturally very good at that. Whereas for me, I’ve definitely had to pull it out of me a little bit. He’s got that natural gift,” she said.

In April, People reported a source said that the pair's relationship had gotten serious. "There has been talk of marriage, and that is a reality,” the source said. "Their priority is their careers for the moment, they added: “Work is important to both and that keeps them busy now.”

Through the rest of 2024, they were seen and photographed on dates and public events they went to together.

In Decemeber, Holland told the podcast, Dish from Waitrose, "“I’m going to be in America this year. I’ll be with my girlfriend’s family, which is fun. I think what we’d like to start doing is, rather than like spending it with each family, each year is bring the families together,” he said. “That’s what I think we want to do next time. This time, since we’re both actors, we’re terrible at organizing things, so it hasn’t happened yet.”

He went on to talk about their relationship. ““I think that’s where Zendaya and I have been such a strong couple, as in the spirit of being able to relate with one another on something that is very, very unique. And I think it’s just relying on the people around you,” he said. "It’s about being a little bit more organized knowing where you want to go, and there are restaurants that have little back rooms and stuff where you can have a more private night. But at the end of the day, it’s no hardship.”

2025: Holland told Men's Health he doesn't walk on red carpets with Zendaya because it's not his moment, it's hers. He went on to say that once he has a family, his career will change. "When I have kids, you will not see me in movies anymore,” he said. “[It’ll just be] golf and dad. And I will just disappear off the face of the earth.”

At the Golden Globes on January 5, Zendaya debuted a ring on her left ring finger, which people speculated could mean Holland and her are engaged. It wasn't a Bulgari ring like her other jewelry.

The next morning, TMZ confirmed that they are engaged, reporting Holland proposed “in one of Zendaya's family homes in the United States” between Christmas and New Year’s, sources close to the couple said. It was a “very romantic” and “intimate” proposal between just them.”
