Why the New Harry Potter Reboot Is Unnecessary: a Potterhead’s Honest Take

TV & Film

July 31, 2025

8 movies, $7.7 million of box office revenue. 7 books. An entire fandom dedicated to the lore of a trio that lives in a very strange, very magical world.

When I watched the Harry Potter movies, I knew that they couldn't have been made better. Sure, there were small things left out (Peeves, Voldermort's backstory, and even Ginny's personality), but overall, the movies were truly faithful to the Golden Trio. No one, in my opinion, can mimic Radcliffe, Rupert, and Watson's performances.

So why are we getting a readaption of a story we already know? Fans already know the plot of the Sorcerer's Stone like the back of our hand. We've got books and movies as source material.

What we really need is new, fresh content. The infamous Black Sisters. We barely know anything about the Noble House of Black, but their lore is so interesting, there's a fan-made short film on them, amassing over 5 million views. The Marauders and even the First Wizarding War are also untouched topics- further reinforcing that the TV reboot is focusing on the wrong story.

And what about the other magical schools? Durmstrang and Beauxbatons were featured in the Triwizard Tourtament, but there's even a school for American witches and wizards- Ilvermorny, located in Massachusetts.

Here is why the new HBO adaption is the last thing us fans need- and a few ideas of what we would really be rooting for.

1. What We Have Is The Best We'll Get

Combined, the eight Harry Potter films have won a whopping 142 awards. It's not as if the movies were ignored, they're already established as one of the best movie franchises.

It takes immense talent to recreate that sort of talent that has garnered Academy Award nominations and BAFTA awards. And the fact the HBO series is just...replicating the movies? Maybe adding a few details? We've already seen the plot of all seven books executed with extremely talented actors, and dazzling visual effects.

In other words, the TV show is unlikely to garner the same fan support that the movies got - whether it's considered good with CGI or whether the editing is jawdropping - the movies have done it all already. The show is trying to accomplish a mission that's already been accomplished.

2. JK Rowling and Her Hate Of New Source Material

Think about it- it's much easier to create a TV show off an already-written book series, than to write an entire new book.

This is my hypothesis on why we're getting a remake, instead of a new story: JK Rowling simply doesn't want to write a new, fresh story. Creating a series on the Black household would require, preferably, its own work of writing, then it can be adapted into a TV show. It's a lot of work to plot out and create a story, let alone create an entire TV show off of your work.

It's much, much easier to let a production studio take books you wrote back in the 1990s and let them reign free with whatever's in there.

And what about the Broadway play? Yes, half of the Cursed Child's plotline is very...confusing, but I'd prefer a movie adaptation of that rather than what HBO is creating.

I'll be honest though. JK Rowling is one of the wealthiest authors in the entire world. She's not in any rush (nor need) to write a book for some extra cash, but the fact she's willing to sign-off and profit off a TV show? It says a lot.

3. The Constant Comparison

Recently, the 2025 adaption of I Know What You Did Last Summer released in theaters. It was heavily critisized for being worse than its 1997 counterpart.

This TV show, I believe, will face the same fate. Everything will be compared to the movies, whether that's the actors performances, the cinematography, or even small details from the books, the TV show will never be its own, separate work. If anything, it might suffer from being compared constantly to the movie format that fans know and love.

Many (who are not real fans, by the way) have already thrown fire at the new Golden Trio: Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. It's extremely disappointing to see that the talented actors have already received criticism before the show has even been recorded, but expected.

To make one thing clear though- the hate these young actors are receiving is, by no means, deserved. It's truly embarrassing to see 40 year old 'fans' comment on why the new Golden Trio is flawed, especially seeing as they're early in their careers. However, while the actors deserve amazing roles, we come back to the same problem- we simply don't need a new TV show adaptation. Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint already have left the mark we needed on the Wizarding World- there's really no reason to give their roles over to any actor, no matter how talented they are.

Conclusion

Overall, the movies that we have do justice to the 7 books that rocked the world of childrens literature- and we certainly don't need another TV Show to do it again. If anything, I wish Rowling would commit her time to delving into more of the Wizarding families we never saw really shine, like the Malfoys, Blacks, as well as many others. What are your feelings on this TV show adaptation? Please feel free to share in the comments, and I hope you enjoyed my (very) strong feelings on this matter.
