They’ve finally announced the cast of its upcoming Harry Potter series adaptation, and for fans who’ve memorised their favourite characters’ lines, cried over their fictional deaths (hey, no judging!), or spent years waiting for Hagrid to deliver their Hogwarts acceptance letter, this feels like a Portkey to the good old times.
It is set to premiere on HBO and stream on HBO Max, and the series delves deeper into the Potter saga—covering some of the details which the movie adaptations missed. It’s a very interesting move, retelling and shaping a story already loved by millions, but it’s also a chance to go further into the Wizarding World with a more modern version, and a whole new generation of actors.
So, whether you’re a die-hard Harry Potter fan, just like me, or a wondering muggle, here’s all that we know about the fresh new faces of the HBO original Harry Potter Series.

- Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
Hailing from Scotland, Dominic McLaughlin is a newcomer to the screen, just like Daniel Radcliffe was when he was first introduced as Harry Potter at the age of 11. For Dominic, he doesn’t have a big portfolio of previous acting projects but coincidentally, played another wizard in Grow(2024), called Oliver Gregory. Early screen tests convinced the producers that he has that “Potter Spark”. Bringing Harry’s determination and bright eyed intensity through the role of the Boy Who Lived, McLaughlin is stepping into one of the most iconic roles in history.
- Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
Arabella Stanton is a young British actress from London, who’s going to officially portray Hermione Granger—the beauty with brains who shattered so many stereotypes in the wizarding world(and ours too!) about girls who knew how to fight back and speak up. From roller skating in Starlight Express, to playing the amazing role of Matilda Wormwood both in West End productions, Arabella is one with the most seasoned experience in all of the Golden Trio.
- Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
Alastair Stout is among the new faces appearing as Ron Weasley. Unlike the two other members of the Golden Trio, Alastair is a newcomer to the screen. His only previous experience is an appearance in an advertising campaign for Albert Bartlett’s Jersey Royal potatoes.
But hey, I think that’s what makes him have that wildcard energy, just like Ron Weasley. I’m very excited to see Stout stepping into the “red-hair, and the hand-me-down robes” energy, portraying the Gryffindor boy we all loved from the books.

Janet McTeer, an Olivier-winning and Oscar-nominated actress, is joining the cast as Minerva McGonagall, the stern but good-willed, and beloved Transfiguration teacher.
With awesome talent displayed in Ozark and Jessica Jones, Janet is expected to deliver the same poise, formidability, and fairness, that Professor McGonagall brought.
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore

John Lithgow is officially stepping into the role of the venerable and eccentric headmaster, Professor Dumbledore, who is most famously an Emmy and Tony winner.
Known for his performances in popular Netflix series The Crown, Lithgow brings the same whimsical and wise energy to spotlight, precisely the one Dumbledore harnessed.
- Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape

Snape is one of my favourite morally grey characters, and I’m excited to see what the new casting for Professor Severus Snape brings to life.
Bringing the complexity and depth to the mysterious Potions master, Paapa Essiedu is all-aboard the crew as Severus Snape. He’s best known for I May Destroy You and Gangs of London, and his casting marks a diverse and fresh take on the feared, and intriguing character.
- Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell
A newly-rising theatre star, Luke Thallon has acclaimed performances in Leopoldstadt and Patriots, to portray the stuttering, yet sinister nature of the Defense Against The Dark Arts’ enigmatic professor, Quirrell.
He’s anticipated to sprinkle a lot of depth into his on-screen alter ego’s duality.
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid

Nick Frost is taking on the role of the gentle and loving half giant, Rubeus Hagrid. The actor is most beloved for his roles in Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.
Expect to feel Hagrid’s classic humour, heartfelt warmth and friendship through the screen, as Frost portrays the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts.
- Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch

Here to portray the grumpy, old caretaker with severe punishments, Paul Whitehouse takes on the role of Argus Filch, and he’s known for The Fast Show, and being a Veteran comedian.
With his knack for humour, Whitehouse is expected to bring a totally unique and delightful edge to his character.
The Behind-The-Screen Scene
While the acting crew is ready to wield their wands, duel, and drink Butterbeer, the minds making the magic possible are the powerhouse of the production.
- Francesca Gardiner—Showrunner and Writer
From Succession, to Killing Eve, Gardiner, as the lead writer and showrunner is tasked with creating the already beloved seven-book saga into a decade long TV series journey.
- Mark Mylod—Director and Executive Producer
Mark Mylod is an Emmy winner, also known for Succession and the Game of Thrones. As an executive producer and director of multiple episodes, Mylod’s got expertise in crafting compelling stories and character arcs.
- J.K. Rowling—Executive Producer
Well well, the original creator of the Harry Potter novels is here to serve as an executive producer. The awesome author without whom the Harry Potter stories wouldn’t exist, is here to ensure that the spellbinding adventures remain grounded to their roots.
- David Heyman—Producer
The mastermind behind the OG Harry Potter movies is returning to guide the new generation of actors, reminding them of the Hogwarts magic with a familiar touch.
- Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts—Producers
Rowling’s trusted collaborators, representing her production company, Brontë Film and TV, they bring their best understanding of the wizarding world, and balancing reinvention.
Final Thoughts
And now, we wait. Will it match the same nostalgia and charm of the original films and books? Maybe not. But mainly, it isn’t aiming for that; it’s transforming into its own unique and original spotlight and narrative, full of new wonder.
So grab your popcorn—and Chocolate Frogs of course, and get ready to enter the Great Hall again, as HBO prepares it cameras, because the story we all know is about to be told again—with a very different flair.
