What Will Be the Biggest Movie This Summer? the Ultimate Summer 2025 Movie List

TV & Film

June 10, 2025

The summer movie season is always one of, if not the busiest of the year. Studios prefer to release their bigger blockbusters either during summer season or the holiday season, as these two timeframes are when people are most at home and go the most to theaters. The summer season has had past hits such as Avengers, Batman, Barbie, Top Gun, Inside Out, Jurassic, and many, many others. Meanwhile, the holiday season in December is home to other "event films" like Avatar, Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Star Wars, and etc..

But we're here to talk about this upcoming summer releases. This year promises to get back to pre-pandemic levels at the box office, as audiences are flocking more than ever to their nearby theater to enjoy that magic that is the theatrical experience.

Some big movies releasing beginning next week all throughout the summer up until August are: How To Train Your Dragon (June 13), Materialists (June 13), 28 Years Later (June 20), Formula 1 starring Brad Pitt (June 27), Megan 2.0 (June 27), Jurasic World: Rebirth (July 2), Superman (July 11), I Know What You Did Last Summer (July 18), The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25), Weapons (August 8), and Freakier Friday (August 8). Like I said, this is probably going to be the busiest and biggest summer season in a very long time, maybe ever! But out of all of these....which will have the most success, make the most noise worldwide, and manage to stand out among so many heavy hitters?

Well... I'm almost certain it will be the Man of Steel.

The Summer of Superman

'Superman', directed by James Gunn (writer/director of Marvel Studios' beloved Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy), now takes his signature style onto this reboot of the most iconic superhero of all time with a blend of epic action, humor and heart. This guy is a genius, taking a group of nobodies with the Guardians back in 2014 when they were first introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and making them popular worldwide and household names with general audiences, shows just how James Gunn's strong writing and direction is with his characters.

There's no doubt he'll deliver a new classic for the genre with Superman this summer. Warner Bros is rebooting the DC UNIVERSE after the "failure" of the last one with critics, fans and audiences. Superman is the first film in this new cinematic universe that will last a good 10+ years. Gunn is the CEO of DC STUDIOS now, so he's the creative head of it all as well, giving DC the chance now more than ever to take the throne from Marvel as king of the superhero genre.

David Corenswet takes on the role of the Man of Steel, and looks like to be the best portrayal of the character since Christopher Reeve in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Reeve continues to this day to be the definitive Superman for most people and one of the most iconic castings of all time, as he changed the way people viewed superheroes and began the love audiences have for the comic book genre. But why do I believe Superman will be the biggest movie this summer?

It's because of who the character is and what he represents. He is the embodiment of hope, kindness, and a better tomorrow. Superman is a cheesy character at times, and that's why he's so beloved.

We live in a very dark world today, there are always tragedies happening all around us. There's definitely a saying out there that the audiences want something unique, something they can take their minds off of during roughly two hours of their day when they go to the theater. There's a reason why the tagline of this film is "Look Up!".

From the trailers alone, you can see the bright and vibrant colors that Gunn is going for. No more dark, grey, and bleak colors in superhero films. Superman is the embodiment of hope, an inspiration for people all around the world, so yes, many heavy hitters are releasing this month and the next, but because of all of this I just mentioned, is why I'm absolutely certain that Superman will be the biggest and most talked about movie of this summer, and definitely in the top 3 biggest of 2025 by the time the year is over with.

When the first trailer was released back in December, it broke viewership records and scored 250M views, the fifth biggest trailer ever in cinema history. And now with the marketing starting to roll out, you can feel hype building, even among casual audiences. Movies today are events, they are experiences…and this movie certainly feels like one.

I am, personally, very excited for this film. Could I be wrong about everything I just talked about? Absolutely!

Superman could end up being a terrible film and have no interest from people because of it. But knowing James Gunn’s past track record with his movies, it’s almost a guarantee that this film will be a new classic for the genre. Supes has always been one of my favorite characters ever, and with this movie so far projecting to be a massive success all over the world when it releases in theaters on July 11th, I'm sure this new DC UNIVERSE is starting off with nothing short of a bang.
