Releasing Superman and announcing Supergirl and Superman 2 within the SAME YEAR?! James Gunn proved to us that the Gunn never jams.
On the afternoon of September 3rd, James Gunn announced the arrival of a Superman sequel on Instagram, Twitter/X, etc., with a comic book image of Lex Luthor in his iconic war suit and Superman holding a screwdriver while leaning on him. That could hint at another battle between Superman and Lex Luthor, but in an advanced high-tech armor suit.
This announcement comes two months after the release of the first Superman movie, two weeks after the release of the second season of Peacemaker, and two months after the announcement of the upcoming solo Supergirl movie, which is releasing worldwide in theaters on June 26th, 2026. All current and future releases will be released within the DCU except for The Batman: Part 2.
Superman has made over $612 million in the worldwide box office since its release on July 11th, 2025. That is absolutely incredible, considering the fact that it's the first movie in the DCU. With Supergirl and Clayface heading into theaters with a high possibility of those two movies hitting big in the box office, will the Superman sequel live up to expectations? (of course it will, it's James Gunn).

What is the Plot?

As we look at the Superman and Lex Luthor comic book image, we can tell that Lex Luthor probably broke out of his cell after he was jailed due to his crimes in Metropolis and Jarhanpur and crafted his signature armored suit to fight back against Superman. While I don't have the full details of the plot of Man of Tomorrow because it was just revealed, I can only assume this plot.
However (and this is a theory, by the way), Superman could team up with his cousin Supergirl, the Justice Gang, Peacemaker, and John Stewart to defeat Lex Luthor and establish their own team that is similar to the Justice League to prevent more villainous chaos like in the first and second films from ever happening again.
Potential Villains

My theory is that Lex Luthor could recruit a bunch of powerful villains, such as
- General Zod: Zod is a Kryptonian general who was banished to the Phantom Zone, a dimension that imprisons criminals within Krypton, due to treason and attempting to overthrow Krypton alongside his partners, Ursa and Non. His powers and abilities include superhuman strength, speed, top-tier stamina, ability to absorb solar energy, heat vision, X-ray vision, frost breath, and regenerative healing factor. He would be a perfect villain for the Superman sequel due to his connection with Krypton, Superman's birthplace and home.
- Brainiac: He is one of the most intelligent beings in the DC Universe and is highly skilled in bending advanced technology to his will to make him stronger. He has an abundant 12th-level intellect and contains superhuman powers and abilities such as durability, telepathy, telekinesis, the ability to shrink and collect planets, mind manipulation, etc. If Lex Luthor were to find and recruit him on his team, they could be very unstoppable.
- Faora: Her powers are derived from the radiation of the yellow sun, which grants her powerful abilities such as flight, heat vision, frost breath, super-breath, X-ray vision, super hearing, longevity, and rapid healing. Like General Zod, she is also a Kryptonian supervillain and war criminal who was imprisoned in the Phantom Zone before breaking free and going against Superman.
- Mister Mxyzptlk: It's okay if you can't pronounce that name because I can't either. This 5th-dimensional supervillain is a very small individual but holds powers that can bend reality to his will. His powers and abilities include reality manipulation, matter manipulation, time manipulation, the ability to break the fourth wall, warp physics, destroy dimensions, and immortality. When he alters the fabric of reality, slows or speeds up time, and alters matter, he usually does it in a comical and whimsical way (he's basically a combination of the Joker and Franklin Richards).
My Reaction

I was watching television, and then when I got a Pop Base notification about the Superman sequel, I literally screamed. I actually held my hands up high and ran around my bed in complete excitement. All I have to say is that I am completely suited and ready for this film, and I cannot wait to witness Superman again with my own eyes after witnessing absolute cinema with the first one last night.
However, I am a little shocked that it won't release for another TWO YEARS. Although I'm not a fan of shortened time spans between the first movie and the sequel and the excessive quantity of superhero movies (not trying to point fingers, Marvel, but you have a reputation), I am glad that the Kryptonian will be back on the big screen, and we all get to feel the thrill of one of James Gunn's masterpieces.
Conclusion
This Superman movie will be one of the biggest DC films in 2027 alongside The Batman: Part 2, and I cannot wait to see both of them. I'm so glad that DC was turned over to James Gunn and Peter Safran instead of some greedy CEO who would destroy DC’s reputation. While we wait for Superman: Man of Tomorrow, please take the chance to watch the first movie and Peacemaker. However, in order to watch Peacemaker, you would have to purchase an HBO Max subscription, which is $16.99 a month with ads and $20.99 a month with no ads.
