Shein is facing major backlash for this odd reason.
The fast fashion store integrated a shirt listing that features a photo of Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, modeling in the shirt. Mangione has been the star of fame since December 2024, primarily because of his actions of killing the healthcare CEO and causing a five-day manhunt all across the country. Mangione is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, until his trial starts; he has since then pleaded not guilty to the charges and currently faces the death penalty.
According to an article from Snopes, Shein has commented:
The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery. We have stringent standards for all listings on our platform. We are conducting a thorough investigation, strengthening our monitoring processes, and will take appropriate action against the vendor in line with our policies.

For those who don't know who Luigi Mangione is or just those who have been living under a rock, Mangione was the headline of every prestigious newspaper in December 2024 when he was accused of killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in Midtown, Manhattan. The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of December 4th, 2024, and after the slaying, he hid in the shadows from every law enforcement official until he was caught in a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9th, 2024.
The gun that he was using was a 3D-printed firearm with a suppressor (a suppressor reduces the noise of a gunshot). The firearm had the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.”
You would think killing someone in the middle of a Manhattan sidewalk would gain a lot of hatred for Mangione; instead, it led to widespread praise and support from many individuals in the country and around the globe. In fact, people who support Mangione are typically also the ones who aim to expose the horrors of greed in healthcare, specifically with UnitedHealthcare.
Many of these complaints include denial of coverage for low-income patients, overcharging, and high costs. Speaking of which, did you know that Blue Cross Blue Shield, a healthcare company, announced that it will no longer cover anesthesia for some surgeries if they exceed a specific duration in New York, Missouri, and Connecticut? That's what led to individuals placing more support in Mangione.
However, they later revoked that policy following backlash. What also led to more support was the salary of Brian Thompson, the increase in insurance denials, and more policies perceived as unjust.
Mangione is currently awaiting trial in the detention center in Brooklyn, New York, and could face the possibility of a death sentence.

Shein has taken down the listing and has launched a full investigation into the incident. They have also said that they will be taking "appropriate action" against the third-party vendor. According to an article from ABC News featuring Jen Bolbeck, a professor at the University of Maryland, the hands, fingers, and arm hair are signs that the Shein photo was "partially generated with AI."
It's currently unknown whether Luigi Mangione knows of the image or not.
Twitter/X Public Reactions
Many individuals, including supporters of Mangione, have gone on Twitter/X to condemn the Shein image and defend him with tweets like:
What stage of the end of times is this?
Mind you, Luigi Mangione doesn't even have a trial date, he's facing the death penalty, and corporations are already exploiting his AI image.
Using AI for this is so disrespectful.

We need AI laws ASAP.
Seriously, how is this guy supposed to get a fair trial at this point?
What a strange time to be alive.
I guess it really is time for AI laws to come in effect.
Conclusion
I agree with most people that it is wrong to use the likeness of someone currently awaiting trial for murder at the age of 27. Not only is it a breach of privacy and a lack of respect, but it is also giving an easy path for AI to become more uncontrollable and reduce the creativity of people trying to show their art to the world. If AI laws are not introduced soon, we won't know what to do in the future.
