Sweater season is finally here! That means it's time to light your pumpkin-scented candles, sip on a warm drink, and get comfortable for a night in. I usually have trouble finding the perfect thing to watch that suits the vibe I'm feeling, so, to save you some time, I've compiled a list of some great fall movies that will surely bring the coziness of the -ber months to you. Whether you’re interested in romance, adventure, comedy, or drama, here are five amazing movies for the ultimate fall vibe.

1. The Goonies

The Goonies (1985) is a comedic classic and a great movie if you’re in a fun mood. It follows one last adventure of a group of kids from the “Goon Docks” of Astoria, Oregon. Due to financial struggles, their families are being evicted and their homes are to be demolished for a new golf course.

While searching through one of their attics, the kids discover an old map that shows the way to a pirate’s ship. This triggers their curious minds and leads them on one last quest, full of danger and obstacles, to find the treasure that will help them save their homes. The Goonies is an overall uplifting movie to watch.

2. Sweet Home Alabama

Sweet Home Alabama (2002) is one for all the romantic comedy lovers out there. It revolves around the successful Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon), a New York fashion designer who happens to be engaged to the mayor’s son, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey). She is then forced to face her past when she secretly returns to her hometown in Alabama to obtain a divorce from her estranged husband, Jake (Josh Lucas).

As Melanie is in town, she is faced with old friends, memories, and secrets, helping her remember who she truly is. We eventually learn to find out why she ran away from Alabama and reinvented herself. Sweet Home Alabama is a warm and heartfelt movie that is 100% a worthy watch.

3. Matilda

For a fun family movie night, Matilda (1996) is the way to go. This movie tells the story of a gifted young girl, Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson). She is remarkably intelligent and loves to read.

Matilda lives with her crude and ungrateful family who pay no attention to her. When her dad, Harry Wormwood (Danny DeVito), enrols her in a grubby elementary school, Matilda discovers that her principal, Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), is cruel and will do anything to torture the people around her. Matilda soon develops telekinetic abilities and uses them to get even with her principal. The fun and imagination of Matilda are what makes this movie a true fall classic.

4. Dead Poets Society

If you’re someone who enjoys teen dramas, Dead Poets Society (1989) is a movie you will definitely love. It's set in a prestigious boys' academy and follows a group of students who are challenged by their new English teacher, Mr Keating (Robin Williams). Through poetry, he encourages them to take advantage of opportunities.

As they go about their school year, they come across many challenges that relate to love, education, family, and identity. Dead Poets Society is a mixture of love and pain, but it’s a movie with an important message.

Trigger Warning: If you choose to watch this movie, please be aware that some scenes may be related to suicide.

5. Coco

For a night of laughs and joy, an amazing family favourite is the Disney animation Coco (2017). In Santa Cecilia, Mexico, Miguel is a part of an anti-music family, but that doesn’t stop him from pursuing his dream of becoming a musician. While the lively town of Santa Cecilia is preparing for El Día de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, Miguel finds himself in the Land of the Dead.

He eventually learns his great grandfather was a famous musician. Coco is an enjoyable movie that features the catchiest tunes and the importance of traditions and family.
