1. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Based on the book by Jenny Han, this movie is known for its fun and interestingness. It starts off with the main character, Lara Jean, having her secret love letters exposed to the boys she wanted to send them to but never did. To put these letters into context, Lara Jean wrote these notes every time she had a crush on a boy, and each letter depicted her crush and how she felt toward him.
She never sent them though, and instead, hid them away in her bedroom in a special box. However, at the beginning of the movie she finds out that they’ve been sent out to their recipients, and she’s extremely embarrassed. The movie continues with Lara Jean getting an unusual offer: pretending to date one of her love letter recipients in order to make his ex-girlfriend jealous. And, while this probably sounds strange to most, Lara Jean takes him up on this offer, which ultimately causes consequences for her and the boy involved. This movie does a great job of captivating all those in need of a break from reality, and its plot line has some major twists in it, such as how the love letters originally got sent out. If you’re in need of a fun movie that will leave you wanting to watch it again, this film is perfect for you!
2. Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the perfect movie for a day when you need a break from reality. Taking place on a cute beach and beach town, it tells the story of two girls named Claire and Hailey who discover a mermaid, named Aquamarine, in the pool. She is here due to an argument she had with her father over love.
She decides then to set out into the world and discover true love once and for all. Of course, though, there are many twists and turns that come with this movie, such as who Aquamarine wants to fall in love with. There is also the sad truth that Hailey is supposed to be moving away soon, which is devastating for both her and Claire as they are best friends. The scenes in this movie are oftentimes hilarious and really give you a break from reality. The theme of true friends always being there for each other is quite potent in this film, which is why it’s such a beloved movie. To sum up, you can’t find a more entertaining and summer-themed movie to watch than Aquamarine.
3. Freaky Friday
Currently, with a sequel in the mix, this movie is a classic that you won’t want to miss. It is focused on a girl named Anna and her mother, Tess, who both have problems and drama with each other. They fight over everything and can’t understand the other’s point of view.
However, due to what was perhaps magic, they wake up one morning having switched places with one another. Now, Tess is in Anna’s body and Anna is in Tess’. And of course, this caused both women major aggravation. How can they possibly deal with each others’ lives? As the movie continues, they slowly begin to navigate each others’ worlds and simultaneously become more tolerant of one another. As time goes on, they grow to understand and love each other, all while trying to figure out how to get back into their own bodies before it is too late. This movie is not just suspenseful, but also warm and sentimental. It keeps you on your toes and more than anything, shows the importance of understanding others.
4. The Parent Trap
Another Lindsay Lohan movie, this film is a classic as well. While pretty unrealistic, it is perhaps the most captivating movie on this list. It begins with two girls, named Hallie and Annie, who are both being sent to the same summer camp.
They look extremely alike and yet, rather quickly, begin to detest one another. It isn’t until the camp forces them to share a bunk together that they put the pieces together and discover that they are sisters. And not just sisters, but twins. Together, they come up with an elaborate plan to get to meet their other parent as Hallie only lives with her dad and Annie, her mom. They decide to switch places and go to each other’s homes. But when their parents discover what has happened, they all meet up in order to switch the girls back. However, this does not go quite smoothly. So many bumps and turns take place during this meetup and the girls don’t even get switched as they refuse to tell their parents who is who. In the end, a shocking twist takes place, and viewers are left overly surprised. This movie is the definition of a fun and captivating film.
5. Into the Woods
While also a Broadway show, this movie is musical and charming. Incorporating all our old fairytale characters, such as Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, this film is sure to give you some nostalgia. When a baker and his wife are tasked with finding objects that represent each of the fairytale characters, the hunt for these possessions begins, causing drama along the way.
There is singing in this movie and lots of plot twists too. The best thing about it is that it never fails to grab your attention for hours. It’s fun, gripping, and leaves you on your toes. Into the Woods is also a great film because of its production. Its scenery is magnificent and the singing is truly amazing. The storyline ripples through with multiple twists and turns and is a prime example of a perfectly crafted film.
6. The Princess Diaries
A childhood favorite, this movie is also based on a book series. Its plot is simple and quite intriguing. Mia, who is a teenage girl who feels that she doesn’t fit in that well at school, finds out from her mother and grandmother that is she a princess in a little country named Genovia.
Her grandmother is currently the queen, and soon, Mia will have to take the throne. This throws Mia for an understandable spin. After much debate, she decides, however, to accept her new life and learn how to be royal. She goes to “princess lessons” with her grandmother and takes on new tasks that all come with being a princess. The best part about this movie, though, is its ability to connect to teens. Even though Mia’s journey is one that most teenagers will not be going on, the emotions she feels during the movie are ones that teens can relate to. Mia goes through different friendships, romance, and family relationships that are similar to teens today, which is something that many movies cannot do. Her life is, in many ways, a typical teenage girl’s life, making it all relatable to high schoolers everywhere.
Movies are one of the best things to help you relax and unwind after a long and stressful day. So next time you’re looking for a cool film, check out these ones listed and tune into them soon.
