What Does “Clean Girl” Mean?

The term "clean girl" comes from TikTok, an aesthetic that promotes self-control. On social media, videos with the hashtag #CleanGirl have racked up millions of views.

It’s all about a minimalist and natural look: discreet accessories, sweaters without logos or in a single color (white, beige, cream…), fresh and “glowy” skin, transparent lip gloss, and usually sleek hair tied into a low bun with absolutely no flyaways.

But it goes beyond just appearance. It’s also about managing your emotions and staying “put together” at all times. For young people, this constant pressure to be perfect can quickly become stressful—even oppressive.

The Psychological Impact

As mentioned earlier, having to be perfect all the time—always “in control”—also means, for example, never having messy hair (no flyaways, no strands out of place), never procrastinating, and staying organized with everything planned.

But when something unexpected comes up and disrupts those plans, it can all fall apart. Constant stress has a significant negative impact on mental health. Personally, I think it’s toxic to try to control every single detail of your life.

There was a time when I really liked the Clean Girl style, and instead of just being inspired by the clothing style, I also took into account the psychological aspects associated with this aesthetic, and a lot of anxiety crises followed... I couldn't manage all my courses, and managing my emotions was even harder.

But at the end of this rather chaotic school year, I realized that I didn't need to change my lifestyle to fit a trend on social media; mine was already exhausting enough, and I didn’t need to impose more limits/criteria on myself to be perfect because nobody is perfect!

Life is already stressful enough, so don’t add more to put yourself in a box. The pressure to fit into categories, to stick a label on yourself, is very common among teenagers. And that’s why we can even talk about an identity crisis.

The Root of the Problem

Why is this style so popular? Because it corresponds to the logic of social networks: visual and quick, a clean look, a tidy room, perfect skin... it attracts, it makes people want to imitate; those who see this kind of video compare themselves and feel inadequate.

Moreover, the Clean Girl fits into a society obsessed with productivity and self-control. She represents the successful girl who is never overwhelmed and who manages everything with elegance. In short, a new pressure for young people.

An Identity Crisis?

Clean Girl, Uptown Girl, Downtown Girl, Messy Girl… all of these are just labels, with a kind of “how-to guide” on how to dress and behave, pushing every teenager to fit into a box. I find that pretty toxic.

There’s nothing wrong with liking a particular clothing style. But what bothers me about the Clean Girl aesthetic is the constant focus on self-control

My advice? Instead of scrolling Pinterest for styles to copy, walk into a store, pick out what you truly like, and create your own outfit. Find your own style!

How to Find Your Style

I want to say that the "clean girl" fashion style doesn't bother me; it's more the psychological aspect. My only advice is that instead of doing Pinterest searches, go to a store, find clothes that you like, try them on, create outfits, ...

Personally, I really like big sweaters, etc. The "downtown girl" style, but especially autumn clothes!

And you?

Conclusion

Don't let TikTok or Instagram decide who you are. If the Clean Girl aesthetic makes you feel good, embrace it, but only because it reflects your personality, not because you feel pressured.

The most important thing is to dare to create your own style, to follow your own vibes, and not the boxes that others want to confine you in.

In the end, your identity is not defined by a trend: it is defined by you.
