Summer is supposed to be the season of joy: no school, endless beach days, amusement parks, and poolside lounging. Everyone romanticizes it like it’s a three-month vacation filled with joy and freedom. It may look dreamy on Instagram with the sunset, smoothie, and road trip posts, but for many of us, the truth hits harder than a midday heatwave: summer can be seriously overrated.

First of all, the weather is BRUTAL. The unbearable heat leaves everyone sticky, sweaty, and drained. So what happens when we do outdoor activities?
We’re left melting after just five minutes. The bright sun could be refreshing, but it also causes sunburns, dehydration, and heat rashes, things none of us want. This leads to the fan and air conditioning becoming something we overly rely on, so the electric bills skyrocket as well.
Not only that, but the sweat ruins everything. Yes, sweat can help keep your body cool in extreme heat, blah blah blah. But fashion takes a hit, and no one looks cute when they’re sweating through their clothes.
Makeup melts, hair gets frizzy, clothes stick, and confidence plummets. Even your favorite summer fits, like flowy dresses, linen shirts, and cute sandals, can start feeling incredibly suffocating when they stick to your skin. And no one wants to constantly worry about how they look or body odor every time they leave the house.
Don’t forget about the summer pests: mosquitoes, flies, and gnats. A simple picnic turns into a chaotic mess with the insects flying around everywhere. Mosquito bites are horrible, and we all know this.
And beyond the typical pests, there are also the dreaded allergies that flare up, leaving you a sneezing, watery-eyed mess. The pollen turns a simple walk outside into a battle against your own immune system. And we don’t want to wear masks. It’s hard to enjoy a “perfect” summer day when you’re constantly reaching for a tissue.

Productivity
Summer also leads to boredom and a lack of productivity. The lack of routine and pressure to fill unstructured time can lead to boredom and a feeling of not accomplishing enough. It brings feelings of demotivation and laziness as well, and the days just blend into each other.
Some people find themselves lacking enthusiasm and energy, even with more free time, and instead just choose to lie in bed all day. It’s like the more free time you have, the less motivated you are to use it. You lose track of what day it is, and before you know it, the whole summer’s gone, and you feel like you did… absolutely nothing.

Just yesterday, I was sitting on my bed for hours straight in the afternoon without even realizing how much time I was wasting, just doom-scrolling on Instagram. We all know that’s not okay.
Even when you try to be productive, the heat makes it nearly impossible to focus. Studying, reading, or even working on a hobby feels harder when 90-degree weather saps your energy.
Feelings of Isolation
And ironically, summer can make people feel isolated. Without the natural socializing that comes with school, clubs, or other structured activities, many teens and young adults spend long stretches alone, watching everyone else’s “fun” on social media, like functions, group trips, and sleepovers. This can trigger major FOMO, even if you wouldn’t enjoy some of those activities in the first place.
The pressure to have a “perfect” summer is intense, especially when your feed is flooded with friends’ vacations and exciting plans. It makes your quiet, low-key days at home feel like a failure, and it creates this constant feeling that you’re missing out on something, even when you aren’t sure what that something is. You find yourself comparing your reality to someone else’s curated fantasy, and it’s a losing game every single time.

On top of that, anywhere you go is packed. The beach on a nice, sunny day: difficult to even find enough private space by the ocean for a group of 8. A trip to an amusement park: two-hour lines and overpriced food and tickets.
Even your favorite local spots become swamped with tourists, kids screaming and running around, and chaotic energy. And if you want to travel, there are insane crowds anywhere you go. There’s no peace, no quiet, and just noise everywhere. Summer isn’t relaxing; it’s overwhelming.
So…
While summer might be the perfect time for fun and freedom, for many of us, it’s just hot, sweaty chaos buried in unrealistic expectations. With the scorching sun, ruined outfits, and a mix of boredom and burnout, summer isn’t always the paradise that we claim it is. And that’s completely okay.
Of course, there is always a possibility for us to make it fun, by hanging out with our friends or going on vacation with our families. But not everyone thrives in endless sunshine, leading some of us to just count down the days until fall.
Because honestly? I would take hoodies, cloudy skies, Halloweekend, and pumpkin pies over scorching heat any day.
