Nobody really saw this one coming: unusual and totally unexpected are the words that came to mind when we heard about the collab between rising global girl group Katseye and Mattel's Monster High. With each member's character paying homage to their own culture, Katseye x Monster High is the unexpected duo we didn’t know we needed… but totally love now that it’s here.

Freaky just got fabulous with Katseye, HYBE and Geffen’s global girl group formed through The Debut: Dream Academy. Made up of Manon, Sophia, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae. The six members represent a mix of cultures, languages, and styles, making Katseye more than just a group, but a global statement.

Katseye is a global girl group and Monster High is a doll brand. They may seem worlds apart, but their collaboration actually makes perfect sense. Both share a core message that just makes sense, embracing individuality and turning what makes you different into your greatest strength.

Kastseye promotes confidence, creativity, and self-expression through their music, performances and the way they speak about their lives and experiences, while Monster High has a long championed idea that being unique is beautiful. Both speak to young audiences who are navigating identity and belonging, encouraging them to be unapologetically themselves in a world that often demands conformity.

On July 18th, Monster High dropped a remix of their Monster High's 2010 anthem "Fright Song", this time performed by Katseye. Right from the opening shot, the MV makes it clear it isn't trying to play it safe. It leans into otherwordly-cute vibe that Monster High is known for, but with a more polished and fashion focused edge.

The MV feels like a runway show in a haunted high school with neon lights, dramatic camera work, and perfectly timed choreography. The styling leans heavily into the Monster High theme with exaggerated silhouettes, monster-inspired makeup, and tiny details that nod to their doll counterparts.

Each Katseye member was reimagined as a Monster High doll which were designed in collaboration with Mattel Creations. The designs were inspired by the members' individual cultures, styles and Monster High's signature freaky fab aesthetic.

Sophia's doll draws inspiration from the Manananggal, a legendary vampire from Filipino folklore known for its shape-shifting and ability to disappear into the night sky. But truly, it's her voice that stands out the most, its hauntingly mesmerising, draws you in and leaves a mark. She's at her strongest after dark, when the moon rises and her true power awakens.

Manon's doll channels the spirit of Mami Wata, a powerful water deity from African folklore. She can summon water serpents that shimmer like liquid magic. Her long, flowing hair mirrors the tide, mesmerising, untamed, but carrying something wild beneath the surface.

Daniela's doll takes after the fierce energy of a werewolf, drawing on lunar energy that mirrors the way she expresses herself through dance. Her movements are instinctive and magnetic, which she uses to influence and lead people in her direction. The werewolf side also reflect her deeply protective and loyal nature.

Lara's doll is a Rakshasa, a sharp-witted and magnetic shapshifter from South Asian mythology. She's the kind of presence that's calm yet leading, always encouraging others to stay true to themselves. She’s driven and unapologetically herself, always up for something new, but never afraid to stand her ground when it matters.

Megan's doll embodies the essence of Húli Jīng, a fox spirit descended from a legendary lineage of mystical Chinese fox spirits, renowned for their wit, charm, and mastery of illusionary magic. Her presence is enchanting and enigmatic, often leaving those around her spellbound. With the ability to shape-shift and weave illusions, Megan walks the line between the seen and unseen.

Yoonchae's doll carries the legacy of the Jangsanbeom, a mysterious white tiger spirit from Korean legend, known for its haunting beauty and elusive nature. Yoonchae is observant, graceful, and deeply intuitive, with a strength that’s subtle yet unshakable. She comes from a long lineage of Korean tiger spirits, known for their strength and cheerful nature. Her energy is light, playful, and warm.

Did I think this collab was totally unexpected? Yes.

Do I love it nonetheless? ALSO A HUGE YES.

This collab feels like a fever dream. I was more of a Barbie girlie when I was younger (still am), but I always loved Monster High. Even though the dolls looked nothing like Barbies, I still wanted one, it felt like such a cool girl thing to have.

Now, as a teen, you're telling me that one of my favorite girl groups and the doll brand I always dreamed of owning have come together? It feels perfect. They’re like puzzle pieces that match seamlessly. Both celebrate being different and powerful in your own way, which makes this collab feel so authentic. From the music video to the dolls themselves, even the little outfit details, everything is spot on.
