KATSEYE is a global pop-star group that started off their career in the competition known as The Debut: Dream Academy. This international girl group is under Geffen Records and HYBE America, consisting six-members: Sophia, Manon, Daniela, Lara, Megan, and Yoonchae. To learn more about each member, they are recognized for their diverse backgrounds.

Sophia is from the Philippines, Lara is from India, Yoonchae is from South Korea, Manon was born and raised in Switzerland, and Megan is from Honolulu. In 2024, when they released their first album called SIS (Soft is Strong), it was already a hit from their title tracks: Touch and My Way. As they continue to transcend beyond what's expected in the musical industry, they managed to drop another unforgettable single known as "Gabriela," which is a part of their new album, Beautiful Chaos, arriving on June 27th.

The Music Video

In the beginning of the music video, we see Jessica Alba, who is currently the CEO of Gabriela Enterprises. In a brief meeting with her team, starring our KATSEYE members, she gives an important announcement saying that she wants one of them to succeed in her position after running this corporation for over 20 years. Now here's where the drama comes in the spotlight?

Which one of the members has the potential to takeover? In other words, who will be the next Gabriela? As we continue watching the music video, we see the girls continuously fighting over who will take the throne. From aggressive fights to sabotaging a wedding, it is evident that competition will never end. I found it astonishing how KATSEYE kept us engaged through the whole video. The choreography was mesmerizing and the story maintained a humorous, but suspenseful vibe. In fact, the telenovela style enhanced the concept in the song too.

The Duality

While I'm sure it's safe to say that Gnarly wasn't what we expected from KATSEYE, "Gabriela" introduced us to a new side of what the girls had to offer on the table. This song captivated us in KATSEYE'S unforgettable heavenly voices, especially with Daniela and Lara's Spanish verse, offering us a refreshing shift in their music. It truly shows how KATSEYE really is indeed the definition of global pop-star group. On their YouTube video, one comment left by @AriaLouisa said,"The Spanish verse is such a genius and refreshing shift in the song. l'm glad they're making use of the different nationalities in Katseye." Another comment by @rlph_12 mentioned,"I love how versatile Katseye can be. they've literally changed 4 concepts in less than a year."

A New Meaning

Aside from the glamorous music video and their versatility, we have to talk about the meaning of this song. I found that this song expresses someone's desires and possessiveness in the form of rivalry. It's interesting to think about it because the girls fought over a job and not a man, which is what we would typically see in romantic songs.

On top of that, it highlights the theme of empowerment because they all have an aspiration, which is to gain the highly sought after position of becoming CEO for Gabriela Enterprises. The song also resonates with our society in modern femininity today, showing us how competitive the work environment may be for women.

Wrapping It Up

Overall, I loved listening to "Gabriela" and I'm so excited for Beautiful Chaos. I'm sure most of the EYEKONS out there in the world are counting down the days as well. Knowing that their previous album SIS (Soft Is Strong) portrayed the central ideas of vulnerability and strength, this new album encapsulates a bold and new perspective of KATSEYE.

They have a long journey ahead and with their strong fanbase, I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store for them in the future. With the amount of success that they have now, it's no doubt that they will continue to have more exciting projects ahead.
