Skipping Breakfast? Here's Why to Think Twice

Let’s take a minute and reflect on something that a few can’t live without while others tend to overlook. Some say that their day can’t begin without it yet others seem to have somehow evolved to survive without it. Any ideas?

If you’re thinking about bagels, or even donuts, you’re close! It’s breakfast; doesn’t sound like it can make or break your day does it? Here’s why it matters and how your body reacts to it.

The Science-Backed Reality

Think about it, you wake up after 7-8 hours (hopefully), with an energy deprived brain, only for you to skip the only thing that kicks it back to non-sleep mode. Your body needs a source of energy for it to function effectively and glucose, derived from the food you eat everyday, is its primary source. Without it, you’re basically a car with no gas and as a result, you struggle with concentration, alertness, and processing and retaining information.

These issues are especially problematic in the academic environment, particularly when learning and performance is expected to be high and consistent. A study published on PubMed has shown that teens who ate breakfast for at least 5 times a week performed better across subjects, particularly in math and reading, when compared to peers who skipped breakfast.

Remember when you had already zoned out in the first period or when you couldn’t even sluggishly walk yourself to class? It’s your body’s drained energy reserve begging for some food. Whether it’s you sprinting to class, heading to the gym, or just trying to not slouch back into the chair, it’s just your missing breakfast that's making everything harder than it really should.

And if you’re skipping breakfast to lose weight, here’s the hard truth: it often backfires. It’s all a cycle really, hunger builds, you start craving, and at the end of the fast, you end up eating more than usual.

The Bright Side to All This

For those of you who just don’t feel hungry early in the morning, remember, you don’t need to get up 30 minutes early everyday to have a full course meal of eggs, toast, oatmeal, a side of fruit, and some OJ. It can be as simple as grabbing a granola bar, blending a smoothie, or having a banana with peanut butter. Start small.

You can also plan your breakfast the night before, considering what types of food suit you best. If you find yourself in a rush in the morning, try portable options on hand, or set your alarm 10 minutes earlier than what you usually wake up at. This doesn’t just change your eating habits, it can literally change the course of your entire day!

Then again, you can’t be blamed. It doesn’t take much negligence to see why all of this matters so much when you can’t see the results immediately. But over time, the consequences will build up by more failing grades, frequent fatigue, and fluctuating moods.

Let’s be real, us teenagers are facing increasing loads of academic, social, and emotional pressures. Proper nutrition isn’t just for your health, it’s for your preparation to meet those challenges with clarity and confidence.

So tomorrow, before heading out for the day, pause and think: will those five minutes of watching reels or just a few minutes of extra sleep feel better than an entire day of underperformance and low energy?
