Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” Is a Masterclass in Subtle Shade: Fans Think They Know Exactly Who It's About

Music & Podcasts

June 07, 2025

Sabrina Carpenter is in her era, and we’re living for every second of it. From the sugary chaos of “Espresso” to the "Please Please Please" that we couldn't get out of our heads for months, she’s been dominating pop playlists and confidently skipping down her villain origin arc in stilettos. But when “Manchild” dropped, on 6th June 2025, things took a turn- from flirty chaos to lyrical therapy.

This wasn’t just another bop. It was personal.

And Twitter (okay, X, but whatever) exploded when Sabrina captioned the track release with: “this one is about you.”

Cue the internet turning into full-blown FBI mode.

So… Who’s the “you” in question?

Let’s just say fans didn’t have to squint too hard. The name Barry Keoghan popped up almost immediately. Everyone has been waiting for what Sabrina had to say about her ex, that she broke up with back in December 2024. Sabrina and Barry were romantically linked from late 2023 into 2024- seen together at award shows, out in LA, and very much giving “we're totally not confirming this, but also yes.” He was in her viral "Please Please Please" music video. He really took the lyrics:

I beg you not to embarass me

seriously.

But by the end of 2024, the spark had apparently fizzled, and neither party addressed it publicly.

Now here comes “Manchild,” with lyrics like:

“Why so sexy if so dumb?”“Half your brain just ain't there.”“If I’m not there, it won’t get done / I choose to blame your mom.”

Subtle? Absolutely not. Sabrina practically lit the "this is about my ex" billboard in Times Square.

All she didn't do was explicitly say it was about him, but who else could it have been about. Don't mind me being an obnoxiously nosy bystander.

This fun quiz will unveil your unique qualities and reveal which music icon you resemble the most.

A Lyrical Breakdown: Shady, Sassy, and Kinda Genius

Unlike her usual bubblegum bangers, “Manchild” isn’t trying to be a viral dance trend. Instead, it’s this deliciously dry commentary on dealing with emotionally immature partners—the kind who think “forgot to text back” is a valid personality trait.

There’s an undercurrent of frustration here, but it’s delivered with such poise, it’s like watching someone roll their eyes with perfect winged eyeliner and walk away. Which is basically what Sabrina did.

Lines like:

“I like my boys playing hard to get / And I like my men all incompetent”

…manage to be both funny and painfully accurate. It’s the kind of song you blast after ending a situationship with someone who treats laundry like a foreign concept.

And let’s not overlook the bridge:

“And I swear they choose me, I'm not choosing them.”

That one hits especially hard. It's almost a wink at the fact that Sabrina always ends up in headlines for her relationships, even when she’s just minding her business and writing bops.

Why Fans Are So Sure It’s About Barry

Aside from the timing and that very pointed tweet, fans have dissected the lyrics to match Barry’s public persona. The “sexy but dumb” line? People immediately associated that with the Saltburn star’s chaotic, offbeat energy.

Not to mention how Sabrina references an ex who never grew up—someone who was emotionally dependent and just… there. Constantly.

Also, remember that iconic moment at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty where they were seen being couple-y and adorable? That was March. By the end of the year, silence.

Nothing. Crickets. So the timeline fits. And while Sabrina’s been known to fictionalize her lyrics (hi, “Nonsense” outros), this one feels way too pointed to be pure fiction.

My Take: The Lyrics Slay, But the Song Isn’t as Catchy

Okay, here’s my personal take and don’t come for me: “Manchild” isn’t as catchy as Sabrina’s other hits. It doesn’t have the stick-in-your-head quality of “Espresso” or “Skin.” You’re not exactly humming it in the shower or making TikToks to it.

But where it does shine? The lyrics. They're sharp, hilarious, and so relatable that you can’t help but smirk.

This song feels like a voice note you’d send your best friend after a breakup- but make it art. I love that Sabrina didn’t hold back, like she never does. She’s giving us her brain, not just her pop star persona. It’s petty but elegant.

Final Thoughts: The “Manchild” Era Is About Knowing Your Worth

Whether or not the song is actually about Barry (or just men in general who think emotional maturity is optional), one thing’s for sure- Sabrina is done babysitting. “Manchild” might not be her most sonically addictive track, but it’s the most grown. It’s the kind of song that reminds you why you deleted his number and blocked him on Spotify.

And honestly? That’s the anthem we need in 2025.
