Why was the Oof Sound Removed?

The "oof" sound was created by Tommy Tallarico and was originally integrated into a game called "Messiah" that was released in 2000. Ever since then, Roblox has been using the sound for a player's death since the development of the game in 2003 and the release of the game in 2006. Tallarico had noticed that they had been using his sound without licensing and contacted them about it.

Additionally, in 2020, Roblox and Tallarico had reached an agreement to reintroduce the sound for creators, but for a measly price of $1 (80-100 robux). However, even after the agreement, Roblox ultimately removed the sound from their platform in July 2022.

A confirmation made on July 28th, 2022, by Roblox involving the issue states:

We’re building towards a future where all creators can thrive. Any asset, including sounds, will have a presence in our Avatar Shop.

Our roadmap includes the ability to add sounds by getting them directly from the creators and licensors. Users will also be able to customize sounds for their avatars in the same way they customize clothing.

Related to sounds, due to a licensing issue, we have removed the "oof" sound from Roblox and have created a replacement default sound which launches today. We plan to expand our Avatar Shop with a whole range of both old and new sounds in the future. More to come on this.

After the whole controversy, a 2-hour long video was released 4 months later that alleged that Joey Kuras, a freelance sound designer, was the creator of the "oof" sound effect, not Tallarico.

When will Roblox bring back the "Oof" sound?

They have already done it. When you update your game to the latest update, it should appear in the game you're playing. Creators also have the ability to add the sound effect to their games if they wish.

If you do not see a notification about an update, you may have to wait. Have fun!
