Review of Netflix's Legal K-Drama, Law School

June 10, 2021

June 9th, 2021 marked the final episode of the first season of the K-drama series Law School and I have hopes for a possible Season 2.

I came across Law School on Netflix a few days before the last episode was available, so I've had the "privilege" of being able to binge-watch 3-4 episodes/day. It was the most awesome experience!

Each episode is packed with unsolved puzzles and intriguing mysteries, making it so irresistible that I couldn't stop clicking to the 'next episode.' If you've stuck through all 16 episodes, you'd know what I'm talking about. And if you don't, here's a review to hype you up about this fascinating show.

What is the series about?

The show takes place at Hankuk University and features the professors and students in the law department. They are working together on an unusual case in which a law professor is indicted for murder. The series also covers how the characters face and overcome their own hardships, such as the death of a loved one or an abusive relationship, which are complex but life-changing experiences for each one of them.

Who are the characters?

Professor Yang is a former prosecutor, known for being straightforward, unsmiling, yet very shrewd and clever in his practice and teaching of law. He is friends with Professor Kim, a maternal woman who's adored by many.

Popular among his freshman class for his genius is Han Joon-hwi, who's also altruistic and kind. It is in his study group that he meets Kang Sol A. Coming from a low-income family, she struggles greatly to get in and make progress at this prestigious law school that's packed with smarter and more privileged students.

There are many other important characters in the show, but the above are the main ones to help you picture the drama.

Reasons I love this show

1. The Law Profession

The high-profile scenes where law students are applying their legal knowledge to debate and find solutions to real court cases in classes or help the weak find justice before the law are quite thrilling and inspiring to watch.

You will also see the lives of law professors, prosecutors, judges, and attorneys and how their work contributes to promoting justice.

2. Gripping Mysteries and Puzzles

The murder case in this show is not a simple one. One mystery unlocked is another one waiting for solutions. There are layers and layers of puzzles that require the sharpest minds to solve. If you're a fan of the mystery/thriller genre, you'll love this show!

3. The Unique Stories of Each Character

This section contains a spoiler.

Like I mentioned above, there are many other characters in the show and they each portray a different story. I will leave it to you to find out about them, but here's one that I find pretty remarkable.

Jeon Ye-seul is Kang Sol's best friend. She's attractive, loyal, and meek. Ye-seul is in a relationship with the son of a famous politician (who also happens to be the main villain).

This guy controls her excessively, and when he doesn't get his way, he uses violence to subdue her. After that, he'd assure her that he's sorry and that he truly loves her, but then continues to be abusive towards her. Ye-seul, confused by the stark contrast between his sweet words and his clearly wrong actions, is forced to decide her next course of action.

Her story tells the journey of a young woman who learns how to stand up and defend herself against abuse before the law, to decide what love is and isn't. Since this is still happening with many women in the world, I feel deep sympathy towards Ye-seul and I hope to make an impact by helping women who face domestic abuse someday.

4. The Chemistry and Subtle Romance

Besides the gripping mysteries, the show also displays the adorable chemistry between Han Joon-hwi and Kang Sol A and it's hard not to smile as you watch their on-screen chemistry.

The duo becomes and remains friends throughout the season, but you will quickly ship them when you witness their interactions. Knowing Sol is usually super clumsy, the generous Joon-hwi usually offers help and look after her.

Although it sounds platonic, the puppy-dog eyes and heart-melting smile Joon-hwi flashes at Sol makes his crush on her endearingly obvious. If you're a true Korean rom-com fan, you will love this, I promise!

What to expect next

This section contains spoilers.

The show ends with the two main student characters achieving their goals. Professor Yang continues to teach at the school. In other words, the show ends in a way that doesn't really imply that there will be another season, which is sad.

I'm not sure about other viewers, but I wholeheartedly wish for another season featuring the same main characters. However, even if there isn't one, I'd still say that this is one of the best series I've ever watched, since the ending is pretty satisfying. Overall, the main theme is pursuing justice and upholding the dictates of the law, and the show does well in portraying the characters' attempts at achieving that.

If you haven't watched the show yet, I hope that this review has convinced you enough to give it a try!
