After sixteen episodes and twenty hours, the final episode of Queen of Tears has finally been released. Fans are now left with an empty hole in their chest without Baek Hyun-Woo and Hong Hae-In, pondering whether the most popular Korean drama in the world will have a subsequent season. With multiple strands left untied, we can speculate and infer from previous dramas what Queen of Tears Season 2 might look like and when it might be released. Here is what to expect from “Queen of Tears” Season 2.

What Is “Queen of Tears” About?

“Queen of Tears” follows Baek Hyun-Woo (acted by Kim Soo-Hyun) who lives in the house of his rich and powerful in-laws. His wife, Hong Hae-In (acted by Kim Ji-Won), is the CEO of the company Queens. After three years of marriage and verbal abuse, Hyun-Woo decides to divorce his wife.

On the day he is going to tell her, she tells him that she has been diagnosed with a rare kind of brain cancer and has only three months left to live. Hyun-Woo, following his friend's advice, decides not to tell her about his plans for divorce and instead stays with her because he will be free soon. Against all odds, in three months, the two begin to fall in love and piece together their broken marriage. As rivals loom in the distance and enemies threaten to displace the Hong family as the head of Queens, love despite death begins to bloom and we are left throughout the drama wondering whether their marriage will stay together and whether Hae-In will beat her inevitable death.

Special Episodes

Although tvN has not officially released news of a second season of Queen of Tears yet, they have tweeted that, following April 28th when Episode 16 is released, two special episodes will be released as well. These two episodes likely will not have any impact on the current plotline nor any character development, but will instead feature the main cast (Kim Ji-Won and Kim Soo-Hyun, as well as perhaps Park Sung-Hoon and more supporting characters) answering questions about themselves.

There may also be several behind-the-scenes of the actors and, many fans are hoping, several of the scenes that were cut from the final product. Along with the numerous videos of the cast playing Jenga and participating in interviews together, fans are delighted that the final episode will not be the final one, and that there will still be more film to anticipate.

Frequent Sequences

Generally, if a drama has a subsequent season, the plot and the drama's contents are planned out well before the first drama is even filmed. However, it is unlikely that they will release news of the drama until several months after the first season is finished. Even then, filming and creating Season Two may take years to complete, as can be seen with Squid Game, wherein the window is yet to be finalized.

Season One of Squid Game was released in 2021 and the date for Season Two's release is still yet to be placed, three years later. However, although Season Two of Queen of Tears is still far away, if tvN does, indeed announce one, we can be certain of what the contents will contain.

What Can We Expect?

In the first several episodes of “Queen of Tears”, after Beom-Ja (Hae-In's aunt) finds out about Hae-In's disease, she calls her friend who previously had cancer but recovered. However, she finds out from a friend that that friend relapsed and died. This could be a foreshadowing of “Queen of Tears” Season Two, wherein Hae-In relapses into cancer of which there is inevitable death.

Another possible plotline that fans speculate about is hinted at by the numerous instances of Hae-In getting jealous of other girls flirting with Hyun-Woo. She constantly talks about how she would be “turning in her grave” when she sees other girls look at Hyun-Woo and many scenes feature her jealous when Hyun-Woo shows off in public. This could hint at a possible plotline in Season Two, wherein a girl arrives on the scene and begins to cause cracks in their marriage, just like Yoon Eun-Sung does in Season One.

Several subplots have not been explored that may be further lengthened if Season Two is released. Soo-Cheol, Hae-In's brother, and his relationship with Da-Hye is one that fans have been holding onto. Fans also love Secretary Na, which may prompt directors to bring her into the spotlight in the following season.

Yoon Eun-Sung's relationship with Hae-In may also be explored in subsequent episodes. This has been hinted at multiple times as they've had a long history in college, wherein Hae-In rejected Eun-Sung's offers because he continually “crossed the line” while pushing her into a ditch and helping her get out of it. These are all likely possibilities that Season Two could have in store for fans, and the directors will likely continue to surprise us with new characters, new plots, and, of course, an emotional thriller.
