I wasn’t a matcha girlie… until I was. And trust me, I did not expect to be converted.
For the longest time I kept hearing people rave about it, how it was calming, energizing, and of course, super aesthetic. I always wanted to try it for myself even before it became this huge sensation to see if matcha really was all that. Of course there were people hating on it, saying it tastes like grass, but that just got me wondering: WHY DO THESE PEOPLE KNOW WHAT GRASS TASTES LIKE??? LIKE ARE YOU OKAY WHY ARE YOU EATING GRASS??

I remember waking up one day to my Instagram feed being filled with matcha recipes and endless café photos. The drink looked so pretty and aesthetic that it made sense why people and their moms were suddenly obsessed. But it was more than the taste.
Matcha became part of an aesthetic and a lifestyle. The pastel green lattes, the minimal cups, and the cozy café corners made it feel everywhere.
From Pinterest boards to YouTube morning routines, it quickly turned into less of a drink trend and more of a cultural moment. And it was not just the lattes. Suddenly there was matcha-misu, matcha tres leches, matcha croissants.
Basically, if it was edible, people were finding a way to make a matcha version. It was everywhere, from cakes to skincare masks, turning matcha from just a trendy drink into an entire aesthetic and lifestyle. Seeing the hype online was one thing. Tasting it myself? That was another.

Trying Matcha for the First Time (Spoiler: Meh)
I remember the day I tried matcha for the very first time. I was excited, a little scared, and honestly did not know what to expect, wondering if I would actually like the taste. It was a sunny day, and I was out with my friends when we decided to stop by a café. This café was known for its matcha, so obviously I was not going to let the opportunity slip by.
I wanted to try something simple so I could really get a sense of the taste and whether I would like it or not. So I ordered an iced vanilla matcha latte because it sounded so good. Once the drink arrived, my excitement only grew, especially since it looked so pretty.
But after the first sip it was just… meh. It tasted like nothing to me. There was a slight hint of that earthy flavor, but not enough to make me like it. I kept repeating to myself “It will grow on me” because I was not ready to accept that maybe matcha was not for me. I thought that was the end of my matcha story before it even began, but little did I know my love story was waiting for its plot twist.
The Day It Finally Clicked
The turning point came when I least expected it. Me and my two closest friends were finally gonna meet after a really long time of not seeing each other. I was beyond happy and excited to meet them and to try the matcha from a new place that my friend kept insisting was better than the one we had the first time, and she hates matcha so I knew she actually meant it.
Once we reached the café I did it again, I ordered an iced vanilla matcha latte with almond milk because someone said it tasted better that way. And I kid you not, this matcha looked way prettier and had a more vibrant green color which we all know is the most important part.
I took a sip and.... I WAS BLOWN AWAY THIS MATCHA ACTUALLY TASTED SO GOOD. The earthy notes were beautiful and it had the right balance of honey and matcha and was just perfect. That one sip changed everything. It made me want to dig into why matcha is more than just a pretty green drink.

More Than Just a Cute Drink
Matcha may be a pretty drink that’s good to look at, but it’s way more than that. Studies show that matcha has up to 137 times more antioxidants than regular green tea because you’re consuming the entire leaf, not just steeping it. Matcha contains a group of antioxidants called catechins, with the most famous one being EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate).
This is the main reason why matcha is called a superfood. It helps fight inflammation that causes acne and redness, reduces stress levels, and protects cells by neutralizing harmful free radicals that speed up aging and damage.
Not only that, but it also supports heart health, as it is linked to lower cholesterol and better blood vessel function, reducing the risk of heart disease. It boosts metabolism, which helps the body burn calories more efficiently, making it popular in wellness and fitness communities. It also has various brain benefits.
It may improve memory and focus by protecting neurons and reducing oxidative stress. Some early studies even suggest that EGCG can slow the growth of certain cancer cells, though more research is still needed.
Matcha also gives energy without the jitters that usually come with coffee. One teaspoon of matcha has around 60–70 mg of caffeine (about half a cup of coffee). But here’s the twist: matcha also has L-theanine, an amino acid that slows the absorption of caffeine. That’s why people say matcha gives them calm alertness, steady energy, focus, and no sudden crash like coffee.
Doctors generally recommend keeping matcha to about 1–2 cups a day, or around 3–4 per week, if you want to enjoy the benefits without overdoing it. While matcha is packed with antioxidants and natural caffeine, drinking too much can sometimes cause issues like jitters, upset stomach, or trouble sleeping. And of course, everyone’s body is different, so if something doesn’t sit right with you, it’s always best to listen to your body first, even if health gurus or doctors are hyping it up.
Balance over extremes is what makes matcha a real wellness win. Once I knew the benefits and felt the difference, it stopped being just a trend and started feeling like part of my routine.
A Happily Ever After (In a Cup)
Ever since I discovered my love for matcha I try to have it at least once a week, although I wish I could have it every day because I am obsessed :(( I am still loyal to my usual go-to order, an iced vanilla matcha latte with almond milk, because it just hits. But I cannot wait to try all the different kinds of matcha out there like strawberry matcha and pistachio matcha. Just thinking about it makes me so happy.
I went from being so excited to try matcha for the first time, to not really enjoying it, to finally realizing that it might actually be the love of my life (or so I hope). I genuinely never thought I would end up liking it this much, but I am so glad I did. You guys should definitely go try it out too and let me know how you feel about it. Just please do not say it tastes like grass because I will crash out <33
