I Don’t Have Time for This — and That’s Exactly Why I’m Writing About It

I used to think only superheroes could do everything at once. But high school really does force you to be one in that sense. I mean, how am I supposed to do internships, projects, sports, volunteering, and possibly more and still have a social life?

At first, the whole idea felt really overwhelming, and I panicked about having to do all that for my future. But little by little, I got used to it. I found things that helped me. And before I knew it, my friends were calling me crazy for going to kickboxing three days a week, swimming two days a week, and still managing all my academic work, including multiple science projects!

And that’s exactly why I’m here: to help you have an easier time adapting to such a busy life. In this article, you’ll find 12 tips from my own experience, divided into four categories. Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll have a much easier time than I did when I first started!

1. Time & Productivity Tips

The 3-Task Rule: The 3-Task Rule is a rule in which you’ll focus on finishing only three main tasks a day. The Rule helps you focus on what truly matters, reduces overwhelm, and gives a satisfying sense of accomplishment each day.

Batching: Batching means grouping similar tasks and doing them all at once instead of constantly switching between them. For example, handle all your emails, then your homework, then your project. It helps your brain stay focused and work more efficiently.

Sunday Planning: Spend 10 minutes every Sunday organizing your week. That way, everything is more planned.

2. Mental Health & Balance Tips

“Rest is Productive” mindset: Taking breaks helps you stay consistent in the long term. Many people think resting will only hold them back, but if you want your work to be truly productive, you need to rest when you are tired and approach it with a clear mind.

Say No Sometimes: You don’t have to join every club or say yes to every opportunity. If your plate is already full, it’s okay to say no. And even when you do have free time, don’t feel pressured to fill it with unimportant things. Focus on the opportunities that truly matter and say no to the rest.

Digital Detox Days: Go offline one evening each week and just breathe. It might sound small or even unnecessary, but we compare ourselves to people online far more than we realize. Taking a break from that might be a good idea.

3. School and Study Tips

Pomodoro Method: I'm sure many of you have heard of this, but the Pomodoro method means working in focused chunks -usually 25 minutes- followed by a 5-minute break. After four “Pomodoros,” you take a longer break, like 15–30 minutes. It makes starting less intimidating since 25 minutes feels doable.

Active Notes: Don’t just copy; summarize in your own words, make diagrams, or teach it to someone else. For example, I memorize best by writing, so I often summarize information in my own words and write it down. But if you have strong visual intelligence, you might prefer using diagrams instead.

Set Micro-Goals: Break big assignments into tiny steps, like “write 1 paragraph” or “solve 5 math problems,” so progress feels achievable.

4. Social Life Tips

Be Present, Forget About Other Things: When you hang out with friends, focus on enjoying the moment instead of stressing about everything else you need to do. I get it, you’re really busy and like to plan ahead. But when you’re relaxing, you have to let that go.

Check-In Often: A quick “Hey, how are you?” text keeps connections strong even when you’re busy. It’s okay if the chat is brief or superficial; it still shows that you’re making time for them in your hectic life.

Mix Fun with Function: Study, exercise, or volunteer with friends. It’s a smart way to balance work and social time, and doing these activities together makes them more fun and motivating.

High school might not be the carefree movie scene we imagined, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, fulfilling, and full of growth. With a bit of organization, balance, and the right mindset, you can handle the chaos and still make time for the things that matter. I believe in you, and I truly hope my tips have helped you.
