It's officially fall. The time of year where first leaves start to fall and suddenly everyone is drinking pumpkin spice lattes, pulling out chunky sweaters, and rewatching Gilmore Girls for the billionth time like it's some seasonal ritual. Fall looks all cute and cozy on Pinterest.
But in real life? It's freezing weather and mountains of homework.
The good news? You don't have to risk your grades to make fall feel special. All you need to do is make tiny adjustments in your schedule and be more intentional.
Not sure what I mean? Don’t worry. Here’s how to make this season actually feel special without flunking your classes:

One of the easiest ways to set the tone for fall is through music. Create a playlist that fits your vision of autumn. Have fun with it. The right playlist can make dragging yourself to school a little less painful.
Stuck on what songs to add? Here are my personal favorites:
- There She Goes - The La's: This one is literally the theme song of the Gilmore Girls pilot (and also in The Parent Trap). It’s catchy and has that timeless late-80s alt/indie vibe. Love this one? Then I would also recommend "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" by the Smiths!
- Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer: Another cute classic autumn song, released in 1998. It’s sweet, nostalgic, and made a comeback on TikTok for a prom transition trend. Like "There She Goes," this song has been featured in movies like She's All That. If you like this song, I would suggest "Duvet" by Bôa.
- Cinnamon Girl - Lana Del Rey: Lana's voice and music is soft, which is perfect for romanticizing the cozy side of fall. If you're into this calming but melancholic vibe, listen to "Fade into You" by Mazzy Star and check out the rest of Lana's music.
- Coffee - Beabadoobee: Want a cozy song without feeling depressed? Then this one is for you. Beabadoobee wrote this wholesome love song about her boyfriend when she was first gifted a guitar. If you love Bea's style and autumn love songs, you should check out her Patched Up EP (especially "The Way I Spoke" and "Dance With Me") and "Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop" by Landon Pigg.

2. Make a Cozy Morning Routine
Mornings don’t always have to be miserable. Shocking, I know. You don't have to wake up at 5AM, hit the gym, and meditate for 30 minutes just to romanticize your morning.
Stacking your schedule will just make you feel more miserable and burnt out. Instead, just add a few tiny things to your schedule. These aren't time consuming and also make getting ready for school feel a lot less chaotic.
First things first, give yourself enough time in the morning to get ready. The last thing you want to do is wake up feeling stressed out. When you get ready, play your fall playlist and light a candle if your parents trust you enough not to burn the house down. Maybe try swapping your basic hoodie and sweatpants for a cute sweater with jeans or leggings.
And for once in your life, consider having breakfast. Just this once. Make yourself some coffee, if you're into that, and make yourself something delicious yet simple to eat (more on that below).
You don't need to bake something extraordinary. It could be as easy as throwing some store-bought French toast sticks or pre-cooked pancakes into the microwave. It still technically fits the fall vibe while being quick and healthy.
Little moments like these can turn mornings from torture into something you actually look forward to.

3. Read Books That Feel Like Fall
There’s something about fall that just makes reading feel right. Maybe it’s the chill in the air or the excuse to get cozy without feeling guilty. Either way, it’s an easy way to add some calm to your day without taking up too much time.
Read in between classes, while you're driving to practice (if you don't get roadsick), or curled up in bed when you should be doing homework. Whether you read an unhealthy amount of books or don't read at all, you'll find a fall read that's right for you.
Not sure how to start? Here are my favorite short, teen appropriate books that are perfect for this season:
- The Make Up - Hailey Gardiner: Friends since high school, Chloe and Hunter work alongside each other for a music video, Chloe as a make up artist and Hunter as the director. Eventually, Hunter selects Chloe to act as his love interest in the video. She is forced to act like she's in love with him, without accidentally revealing her true feelings. This dual POV friends-to-lovers novel perfectly blends romantic comedy with fall vibes.
- Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice - Katie Cicatelli-Kuc: Lucy Kane has been working at her mom's coffee shop Cup o' Jo in Briar Glenn as long as she can remember. Autumn is their best business season, since their small town is full of tourists. Except this year, it's not. A big corporate coffee chain, Java Junction, moved in right across the street from them, and Lucy may or may not have a crush on the owner's son, Jack Harper. This book is perfect for fans of Gilmore Girls who don't mind a watered down romance.
- Maybe Meant to Be - K.L. Walther: Everyone at Bexley School swears that Sage Morgan and Charlie Carmichael are end game. So why can't Sage stop thinking about Charlie's twin brother, Nick...and why is Charlie catching feelings for the new boy at school? From the author of The Summer of Broken Rules, comes a queer, coming-of-age, fall romance that shows that love doesn't always go as planned, but can turn out even better than expected.
- Divine Rivals - Rebecca Ross: Iris Winnow despises Roman Kitt, her co-worker at Oath Gazette, who makes it his personal mission to be better than her in every way, or so it seems, until they connect through magical letters. Not even a magical war between gods can keep them apart. A great romantasy for any time of the year.
- The Inheritance Games - Jennifer Lynn Barnes: Avery Grambs doesn't have the best living situation. She lives in her car because she can't stand her sister's abusive on and off again boyfriend and her deadbeat dad could care less about her. But one day, everything changes. Tobias Hawthorne, the ninth richest man in America, dies, leaving Avery with 46.2 billion dollars, a mansion, and all his assets, and she has no idea why. This is a great quick, fast paced mystery for anyone who wants to get into reading.

4. Bake Something Sweet
When it's freezing outside, there's something about the smell of cinnamon or cookies in the oven that just screams fall. But before you start pretending you're in a Great British Bake-Off episode, let's be real: during school, nobody has time to bake anything crazy.
Pick something simple and low-effort, like:
- Pillsbury Halloween Cookies: You just throw them into 350°F oven on a cookie sheet and wait for 12-14 minutes. Quick and delicious.
- Canned Cinnamon Rolls: When I don't feel like making them from scratch, I make these instead. Just pop them in the oven until they are golden brown and add the icing after. Simple, yummy, and fall-coded.
- Pumpkin Mug Cake: I love making these after I get home from school. They take under 5 minutes and you can find simple tutorials on TikTok and Youtube Shorts.
- Cinnamon Apple Chips: Technically not baking, but still super easy, healthy, and delicious. Cut up an apple (I usually use Pink Lady or McIntosh) into thin slices. Put them in the microwave for 2-5 minutes to dehydrate them. You can put the cinnamon on before or after, it doesn't really matter.

5. Romanticize the Impossible...School
I know, I know. You're probably thinking that I completely lost it. Romanticize School?
Be so for real. Fall is the prettiest season, yet most of us are stuck in school. But hear me out: Instead of moping through every class, try appreciating the small things, like getting to chat with your best friend on the bus every morning or going to your favorite elective with that chill teacher. Because honestly? Sooner or later, all of it’s going to come to an end, and you’ll wish you’d enjoyed it while it lasted.
Romanticizing school doesn't mean pretending it's perfect, because it's obviously not. It means appreciating the good things that happen or just doing little things to make yourself happier. So what can you do to make school feel less miserable?
It can be as easy as wearing a cute outfit to school and doing your hair or make up, as we discussed earlier. Just looking put together can make you feel confident in the morning, even if you're exhausted.
Next, actually try in school. I'm not asking for you to turn into some "academic weapon." But, school becomes much more easier and even enjoyable if you're organized and not stressing out about your grades.
Here's what works for me (and what might help you too):
- Use Some Sort of Planner: I use two different digital planners, a weekly one and a daily one. For my weekly one, I use Notion to track what assignments I have to do and when I need to get them done by. For my daily one, I use Google Calendar because I can easily prioritize my tasks by time-blocking. If you want to use something simple, I definitely would recommend Google Calendar because it's quick and easy to use.
- Have a Dedicated Study/Homework Spot: Before I got my desk, I used to do all my work on my bed and I wasn't very productive. Studying on your bed isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially if you don't have other options, but it's just not recommended. If available, do your work on a clean desk or some sort of table. It really helps you focus.
- Take Notes and Actually Study: As obvious as this seems, I know a lot of people at my school who don't study at all and their grades show it. Studying makes a big difference. When teachers give lectures in class, I type up my notes on Google Docs and highlight any important points that my teacher emphasizes. When I get home, I rewrite it on paper. I use a black pen for normal notes or basic details and use a different color to write down the important details mentioned before. It helps me stay organized and memorize the information.

The Takeaway:
Fall doesn't have to be a stressful season. You can actually romanticize it while getting ahead in your classes. With a few simple changes, whether it's making a seasonal playlist, having a cozy yet productive morning, reading a good book, baking something delicious, or just staying organized in school, you can finally make fall yours without falling behind in school.
This fall, stay on top of your work, and still romanticize every second of it.
