How to Put Yourself First When You Feel Like You Can't Keep Going

Mental Health

Wed, April 29

Sometimes, as a teenager, merely existing can feel heavy. There are times when it feels impossible to continue on the path you're on, where all you want to do is the opposite of what's going on, and even when you wish you were anyone but yourself. But the truth is, you can't be somebody you're not. When it feels like you can't keep putting one foot in front of the other, there are many ways to find yourself again.

1. Find a Hobby:

Coming home from school, sports, and activities can be exhausting. An important aspect of putting yourself first is having something to look forward to. Below are a few hobbies that may intrigue you.

Reading

It may sound boring, but reading really is one of the most comforting and interesting things to pick up. Whether it's comic books, YA novels, or an intellectual essay, opening the first page of a book can feel like stepping into another world. It helps you get to know yourself; what you like, what you don't, and how to sit in silence, while still having some entertainment.

Journaling

Ever keep a diary as a young child? Take it up again! Journaling doesn't necessarily have to be extremely emotional; it can be as simple as writing down what you did that day. It's nice to wake up and set goals for the day, or recap your emotions before lying down to sleep.

Baking

If you like doing things with your hands and having a rewarding treat after, baking could be for you. Settling into your happy place can be as simple as whipping up some brownies or throwing some cake in the oven. Plus, you get to eat it after!

2. Self-Care:

Physical Health

Physical health is significantly connected to your mental health and mood. Yes, I know, you don't want to go for a run or do a workout. Trust me, neither do I.

But I almost always feel much better afterwards. Working out doesn't need to happen in order to look a certain way. In fact, it shouldn't. Working out and being active should be enjoyable. It doesn't have to be running 5 miles a day; it could be hula-hooping for 10 minutes or walking down to the store. Move your body because you want to, not because you feel obligated to.

Mental Health

Taking care of your brain is arguably the most important and effective thing you can do. Journaling, the hobby mentioned above, is very good for your mental health, along with taking baths, going for walks, and talking to someone about your feelings. Therapy is incredibly helpful; if you don't have access to a therapist, talk to your school counselor, or even a friend. There are many mental health apps online as well that can help track your feelings, patterns, and connect you with help if needed.

3. Build Better Habits

I know, I know, sounds like something your mom would say, right? Well, it actually works. Good habits don't need to be boring and annoying. In fact, there are some you can start today. Some examples include:

Waking Up at the Same Time Every Morning:

This helps build a routine, which can make you wake up every morning feeling refreshed.

Washing Your Body/Face Before Bed:

Feeling clean before going to bed can help you fall asleep better. If you're depressed or are having a moment, even wiping down your body can be enough. Do what you can.

Having 3 Meals a Day:

Basic, sure, but many people forget how important it is to eat consistently. If eating is hard to remember, set alarms on your phone. Make sure you're nourishing your body, because you deserve it.

Limiting Screens Before Bed:

It may sound annoying, but you need to sleep in complete darkness, and watching screens before/during bedtime can cause headaches and restless sleep.

Conclusion

Putting yourself first is something that should be at the top of your "to-do list". Growing up is hard, and it sucks, but one way to make it better is by prioritizing yourself and what you want, not what others want.
