BookTok is one of the most popular subcommunities on TikTok. With the hashtag #BookTok surpassing 300 billion views, it’s safe to say the online reading community has built a world of its own. For those unfamiliar, BookTok is a space where readers share reviews, reactions and recommendations for their favorite books.
In recent years, book-to-screen adaptations have surged in popularity, and many of the stories that went viral on BookTok are now getting the Hollywood treatment. Here’s a look at some of your favorite reads making their way to the big and small screens.
Turning a book into a movie or series is a long process that can take years from start to screen. First, a studio or producer must acquire the rights to adapt the book, often through a bidding process if the story is especially popular. Once the rights are secured, the project enters development, the screenwriters begin adapting the story into a script and a showrunner or director is chosen. From there, producers pitch the project to networks or streaming platforms, hoping to get it “greenlit” for production.
Casting, filming and post-production follow, but many adaptations never make it past the early stages. Most BookTok favorites currently in the works, including Fourth Wing, The Twisted Series and The Inheritance Games, are still in development, meaning it could be several years before fans see them on screen, likely between 2027 and 2030. These are the different books that fans anticipate and are closer than they may appear.

The viral BookTok fantasy Fourth Wing is officially being developed into a television series. Greenlit by Prime Video, the adaptation will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society.
Meredith Averill, known for her work on Locke & Key and Wednesday, will serve as showrunner. The series is currently in early development and will adapt the first novel in Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series. The series is about a girl named Violet Sorrengail who is forced by the war general, her mother, to join the Basgiath War College’s dragon rider program. However, survival depends on the ability to “graduate or die.” The show is expected to explore the brutal and high-stakes world of Basgiath, with potential for one season per book.
I liked this series, when I first read it. It gives the nostalgia of old day dystopia like The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner. I loved how she wrote this book and the action scenes were so fun. I think with a really good budget, this show can be really good.
Rebecca Yarros has shared her excitement about the project, revealing that she has already read multiple drafts of the script.
“I’ve read two versions of the script now and it is … oh my God,” Yarros said during the Onyx Storm midnight release. “I was super scared to read it … when you hand somebody your baby, you’re kind of like, ‘It’s all important,’ and I kicked my feet the entire time. I love it.”
Among popular fan casts for Fourth Wing, Xaden Riorson is often imagined as Emilio Sakraya or Josh Hutcherson, while top picks for Violet Sorrengail include Mackenzie Foy, Kristine Froseth, and Katie Douglas.

Twisted Series by Ana Huang
Ana Huang’s Twisted series, a set of steamy romance novels following four college friends as they navigate love and secrets, has been greenlit for four movie adaptations at Netflix. The books are about four friends who fall in love in different ways, going on adventures, and learning how to navigate life, love, and even secrets. I read the first book of the series, and I really liked it. It is kind of the first romance book that started BookTok, so I found pleasure in reading it.
The project is in early development, with Netflix finalizing a screenwriter and showrunner while adapting the pilot script.
In a May 2024 interview with Variety, Huang discussed casting:
“Yes, we do want people who look like the characters, obviously, they should fit like that. But it is a romance series, and what’s most important to me is that there’s chemistry between the characters. There’s also an argument to be made for finding fresh faces.”
Production officially began in March 2024. Popular fan casts include Lana Condor, Ashley Liao, and creator @tingting_lai for Ava Chen, while Theo James, Matthew Daddario, Thomas Doherty, and Kaden Hammond are fan favorites for Alex Volkov. Huang has said that casting is important to her and she wants the casting to be accurate to the book.
Chestnut Springs by Elsie Silver
Netflix has acquired the rights to Chestnut Springs, a five-book romance series by Elsie Silver. The series is about siblings who live in a small-town family-owned ranch in Canada. Each of them has their own love story that comes with drama, secrets, and more.
The adaptation will be produced by Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment (Deadpool & Wolverine, Free Guy) with screenwriter Hannah Schneider (Reign) attached. While details remain limited, Silver has confirmed the series’ development.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
The hit young adult mystery series, The Inheritance Games, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is being adapted for television by Lionsgate Television. The story is about a girl named Avery Grambs who inherits billions of dollars from a stranger. I read all three books in this series, and I absolutely loved it.
It is great for readers who are just beginning to read. The mystery, drama, and plot twist are great for all readers.
The series will be produced by Temple Hill Entertainment, the company behind The Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games, and The Maze Runner. Barnes will also serve as a producer.
The trilogy, which went viral on TikTok in 2020, includes The Inheritance Games (2020), The Hawthorne Legacy (2021) and The Final Gambit (2022). The show remains in early development and is not expected to premiere before 2028.
Powerless by Lauren Roberts
Lauren Roberts’ viral romantasy novel Powerless is being adapted for television by Amazon MGM Studios and is expected to air on Prime Video. Daphne Ferraro will serve as head writer, and Will Gluck is set to direct. Roberts herself is involved in the adaptation process.
The story follows the forbidden romance trope, more specifically between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl. I read this book and absolutely fell in love with its banter and storyline. I have yet to read the next two.
At a press conference, Roberts told fans:
“I’ve been sworn to secrecy about a lot of stuff, so I can’t say anything yet. But there are things happening behind the scenes. I’ve spoken to the head writer, she’s amazing and really cares about these books. I’ll be involved as much as possible because I know what we want, I know the vibes, and I want to deliver the best I can.”
Roberts originally self-published Powerless in January 2023 before it was picked up by Simon & Schuster. The series includes Reckless (2024), Fearless (2025), and Fearful (2025), a novella. While the main trilogy has concluded, Roberts has hinted at future projects in the same universe.
Lightlark by Alex Aster
Alex Aster’s Lightlark series, a 2020 TikTok sensation, is officially being adapted into a film by Universal Pictures, with the producers behind The Twilight Saga attached. Aster will serve as an executive producer. The story is about young girl Isla Crown, the young ruler of a cursed realm, as she participates in the Centennial, a dangerous competition hosted by a magical island that appears every 100 years. I have yet to read this book, but I love the TikTok reactions to the plot twist and the main love interest for Isla.
Aster shared her excitement during an appearance on Good Morning America:
“There is a script. That’s huge news. I’m very excited about it, and I think readers will be, too. There’s more news coming in 2025. Late this year or early next year, casting is expected to begin.”
The film remains in early development.
