June 12, 2024

BLACKPINK is arguably the most popular girl group in the history of K-pop, amassing over 57 million Instagram followers and over 280 million cumulative followers for each of their members, Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa. BLACKPINK's YouTube channel has over 90 million subscribers, and its most popular music videos have 2.2 billion views, with 36 billion views across the entire platform.

Queens of K-pop, second in the K-pop world only to the Korean boyband BTS, BLACKPINK pushed K-pop to the international level and popularized South Korean music and culture to the extremes. With their latest comeback, Born Pink, releasing in 2022, BLACKPINK has gone on a two-year hiatus following their Born Pink World Tour, leading fans to wonder whether they are preparing for their next comeback and when that may be.

Who are BLACKPINK?

BLACKPINK debuted as a four-member group in 2016 with their album, SQUARE ONE, which featured 'BOOMBAYAH' and 'Whistle'. The two songs shot to the top of the Billboard global charts, peaking at first and second place, respectively. Sweeping all of South Korea's charts, BLACKPINK won first place at Inkigayo.

With the release of "How You Like That" and "DU-DDU-DU-DDU" in 2018, it was clear that BLACKPINK had taken over the world with their music. Millions of fans, dubbed BLINKs, flooded the stadiums, with their concerts sold out in a matter of minutes. BLACKPINK's 2018 "In Your Area" world tour comprised 36 separate shows and grossed over $56 million in revenue.

By 2018, BLACKPINK had released more than four songs, each of which broke respective records, and were the first Korean girl group songs to enter Canadian and U.K. charts. "How You Like That" alone became the most-viewed music video within 24 hours on YouTube and broke five different Guinness World Records. BLACKPINK quickly became the most popular girl group in the world, overthrowing previous dominant girl groups, including TWICE, RedVelvet, and MAMAMOO, marking the start of a new era.

Born Pink

BLACKPINK released their first song, Pink Venom, of their latest comeback album, Born Pink, in 2022. 'Pink Venom' made it to the top of the Billboard Global 200 chart, the first time a girl group hit number one. Their song remained on the chart for two consecutive weeks. It peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Top 100 chart and was the first song by a K-pop artist to reach number one on Australia's charts. Winning numerous 'Best Music Video' awards and 'Song of the Year,' Born Pink was an international success.

Their Born Pink World Tour began in October of 2022 as BLACKPINK travelled across 22 countries with 66 concerts. They made 331.8 million, breaking the record for the highest-grossing concert tour by a girl group. Over 1.8 million fans attended their concerts, breaking the record for the most-attended concert tour by a K-pop girl group. For each concert, they performed both their songs from Born Pink, old songs from previous albums, and unreleased songs (namely, Jennie's 'You and Me').

Long hiatus (with Solos)

Jisoo, the unnamed leader of BLACKPINK, was the last member who did not have a solo. She released her album in 2023, with songs' Flower' and 'All Eyes on Me,' with 'Flower' garnering over 500 million views on YouTube. Her album became the best-selling album of all time by a female South Korean artist.

She broke multiple records on Billboard's charts and won countless accolades for her singles. The most followed Korean actress on Instagram for her starring role in Snowdrop, Jisoo, and her long-awaited solo was the break between their 2022 comeback and their next in 2025.

2025 Comeback?

BLACKPINK has been on a hiatus for nearly two years, ever since their release of Born Pink in April 2022. Their break has left fans craving more new music, with the bare release of 'The Girls' for BLACKPINK THE GAME and Jisoo's solo album. BLACKPINK is likely to release a new album with a comeback in the middle of 2025, according to numerous news articles and media sources.

Their comeback has been hinted at by Jisoo herself and other YG Entertainment officials, although never explicitly stated. Although the four members terminated their solo alliance with YG Entertainment in early 2024, with Jennie going on to feature in 'Spot!', BLACKPINK resigned with YG Entertainment as a group, showing that they are planning on releasing more songs as a group in the near future.

BLACKPINK's youngest member, Lisa, has also teased her new single comeback with her new company, LLOUD. Ever since her last comeback, LALISA, Lisa has released almost no music. This is why fans were excited when they saw that she updated her social media banner, hinting at a new solo being released soon.

With new music being announced, we can expect that BLACKPINK and its members have exciting news for us soon! Stay tuned for more updates!
