When I moved into my freshman dorm, I thought I was prepared. I had a closet expanding rack, a mini fan, and even one of those over-the-door mirrors. Then it rained, and I realized my cheap umbrella just didn’t cut it. Cut to me walking to class, soaked.
Whether you're a first-year student or heading into another semester, there are always those not-so-obvious essentials you’ll wish you had.
This is not a list of those obvious things everyone talks about, like command strips and long charging cords. Here's the ultimate list of forgotten dorm must-haves that’ll save your future self.
1. Umbrella (That’s Actually Durable)
It will rain. And the $6 umbrella from the bookstore won’t survive the first gust of wind. Bring a sturdy, compact one and keep it in your backpack at all times.
2. A Quick-Dry Swim or Beach Towel
Perfect for spontaneous lake days or just lounging on the quad. Unlike bath towels, these dry fast and don’t take up valuable laundry space. I promise these will come in handy!
3. Scissors
You’d be shocked how often you need these. Opening packages, trimming tags, cutting tape — don't be the one who has to borrow every time.
4. Packing Tape
Not just for move-in and move-out, you'll need it for care packages and random fixes.
5. Command Hooks and Strips (In Bulk)
Okay, yes, this one’s semi-obvious, but bring more than you think. Especially the big hooks for towels and bags, and the strips for posters and mirrors. Skip the mini hooks if you can; they hold nothing other than fairy lights.
6. Shower Caddy That Actually Drains
Go mesh or breathable plastic. Solid buckets trap water and grow weird stuff at the bottom. You do not want to discover that mid-semester.
7. Extra Thick Towel (for Your Caddy)
Your mesh caddy will drip. Place it on an extra towel to prevent puddles, slippery floors, or surprise mold under your bed.
8. Extra Halloween Costumes (and Theme Night Outfits)
October sneaks up fast. Also, college Halloween is an all-weekend affair, if not longer. Bring 2–3 easy costume pieces (cat ears, fairy wings, cowboy hat).
9. Laundry Bag with Straps (NOT a Basket)
Dragging a hard plastic bin down three flights of stairs is actual punishment. Get a soft, backpack-style laundry bag.
10. Extra Set of Sheets
Life gets busy and laundry will get delayed. Having a second set will give you comfort and backup when life happens.
Bonus Tips
You don’t need 12 throw pillows. But you do need these items. Plan for real life and thank yourself later!
