The 2009 VMA Mic Snatch

As we reminisce about the moments from the VMA’s that are engraved into our memories forever, one stands out like a neon sign - the infamous 2009 Kanye West and Taylor Swift drama. Every real Swiftie remembers Taylor Swift's You Belong With Me era, and how she won her first VMA for that song. While she was in the middle of her speech, accepting the award, Kanye West unexpectedly appeared on stage and took the microphone.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’m letting you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” he said, cutting her off.

It was completely shocking and unexpected for the audience– even Beyoncé looked surprised, reportedly mouthing, "Oh, Kanye!" and looking disappointed.

In her Miss Americana documentary, Taylor reflected on this moment saying, "It had such an echo in there. At that time, I didn't know they were booing him for doing that." "It felt like they were heckling me."

Kanye got a ton of hate from the public. Some fans were disappointed, while others were confused. Even former President Barack Obama came out and criticised Kanye, saying that his behaviour was disrespectful. After the backlash, Kanye issued a public apology, but it was not long before he changed his mind and said he had no regrets about how he acted that night.

The Infamous 'Famous' Lyric and Phone Call Leak

In 2016, things flared up again when Kanye released Famous, featuring the line:

“I feel like me and Taylor might still have [censored] / Why? I made that [censored] famous.”

Taylor’s team rapidly responded, saying that she had never consented to being referred to in that manner. While, Kanye and his then-wife, Kim Kardashian, asserted that Taylor had consented, and Kim even shared a video of a phone conversation in which Taylor appeared to endorse aspects of the song—although the term “[censored]” was not referenced.

After the video went viral, the internet went wild. #KimExposedTaylorParty trended, and Taylor was suddenly branded a snake—a label she later leaned into during her Reputation era.

But in 2020, the full phone call leaked, showing Taylor hadn’t approved the line after all. She responded subtly on Instagram: “Someone edited and manipulated the footage in order to frame me and put me, my family, and my fans through [censored] for four years.” Then added, “The truth always comes out.”

'Look What You Made Me Do' and the Snake Emoji Era

In 2017 Swift released the first song from her album Reputation. Look What You Made Me Do contained several references to her past feuds and scandals, such as the tumultuous 2009 VMA moment. Its accompanying music video featured Taylor walking out of a grave, symbolic of rebirth and image transformation.

The album was released amidst a wave of snake emojis being directed at Taylor on social media. Some had already been using the term "snake" to describe her in a derogatory manner, and she had embraced the symbol as part of her new persona. Fans began chanting "snake queen," and she used snake visuals for her tour too.

'Thank You Aimee' and Alleged Kim Kardashian Diss

Fast-forward to 2024. Taylor Swift has definitely moved on from her Reputation era, but in her new album The Tortured Poets Department, she dropped a track that had some fans doing a double-take. thanK you aIMee had some pretty obvious subliminal messaging about Kim Kardashian—at least that’s what everyone was saying. The song’s title Aimee suspiciously resembles the "KIM" in “Thank You Aimee”, as in Kim Kardashian, and the capital letters pointed toward her.

The track was full of themes about dealing with mean girls and fake friendships, and the entire vibe gave off massive revenge energy towards people who tried to tear Taylor down. The lyrics?

,,All that time you were throwin' punches, I was buildin' somethin', And I couldn't wait to show you it was real''

The undertones screamed, "This one's for you, Kim."

Fans couldn’t help but flood Kim’s social media once again with snake emojis. Kim, as usual, didn’t directly respond, but that didn't stop Taylor from keeping her artistic commentary going.

Kanye's 2025 Twitter Controversy and Legal Action

Well, we know that Kanye always finds ways to be in scandal or start a scandal on his own. In April 2025, he took to Twitter with a series of controversial posts about Taylor Swift, including comments about their past and comparisons to other celebrities he "actually respects."

In a since-deleted X (formerly Twitter) post on April 7, 2025, Kanye West cited his controversial past with Taylor Swift as one of three reasons he believes the NFL has never invited him to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. "I never was allowed to do the Super Bowl because of three moments," he wrote.

"George Bush doesn't care about Black people. The Taylor Swift movement moment. Wearing a MAGA hat". He also accused Swift of being intimate with Justin Bieber and Harry Styles, a claim he insisted was “ONE THOUSAND PER CENT TRUE.” The backlash was immediate, and now Swift has reportedly fired back.

According to the Daily Mail, the pop icon has issued a cease and desist letter to West, calling his posts “false, defamatory, and amounting to sexual harassment.” A source told the outlet, “This isn’t just [West] gossiping. This is [West] sexually harassing a woman, defaming her and intending to cause harm to her and to her career.”

Sources close to Taylor's boyfriend, NFL player Travis Kelce, reported that he was upset over what transpired and was with Taylor. He did not agree with Kanye's comments and believed they should have repercussions. The courthouse drama was a highlight of the ongoing bad blood between Taylor and Kanye, and fans waited anxiously.

From stage invasions to petty internet tweets, the Taylor Swift and Kanye West feud has been a [censored] of a journey. Stay tuned—who knows what they'll do next?
