If you're reading this article, chances are you're either a junior or a senior in high school. If you're planning on taking the SAT or ACT, you've probably heard a MILLION different opinions about when you should take it. Some say that you should wait until the end of junior year, while others claim that you should take it mid-sophomore year!

So... what's actually the best time? Here's the simple, student-friendly breakdown I wish someone had given me.

4. Spring of Junior Year

If you've ever spoken with your school counselors, you would know that many recommend taking the SAT and ACT in March of your Junior Year. However, I personally disagree with this timing. For those who know, junior year is the year for the AP classes. With the AP exams in May, you'd have to divide your time between focusing on the multiple AP exams you have to pass, as well as achieving a sufficient score on the SAT.

3. Winter of Junior Year

Though less common, this date is considerably more manageable compared to the spring dates. Whether you take it in November (technically fall) or December, as long as you don't let the holiday spirits propel you into the disaster of procrastination, you could really do well on the exams.

2. September of Junior Year

Personally, for my first attempt, I took the September SAT. While my score was sufficient, it wasn't exactly what I wanted. Speaking from experience, the September date was quite difficult to study for, as it was just after school had started, and I was still getting myself adjusted to the flow of the curriculum and workloads.

This left me little time to actually focus on studying for the SAT, although for those who don't procrastinate, it's definitely manageable. Compared to the other dates listed above, September would definitely be my first pick. However, it isn't the ultimate test date.

1. AUGUST of Junior Year

This is the ULTIMATE month to take either the SAT or ACT. With the entire summer lying in wait for preparation, what date could be better?

While there have been rumours that the August SAT exam is one of the hardest, I wouldn't let that change my test date. By utilizing resources like Bluebook and Khan Academy, you can efficiently spend your time prepping for the SAT and ACT. Anyone who has aced the SAT, has definitely used the College Board resources. Linked below is a database of thousands of questions of all types in preparation for the SAT (unfortunately, I don't know many resources for the ACT): https://satsuitequestionbank.collegeboard.org/digital/search

All in all, I would just say: Do NOT wait until the END of Junior Year or the start of Senior year for your first SAT attempt. For those who may consider taking it prior to Junior year, it entirely depends from person to person.

To pick your best date, ask yourself these three questions.

1. Have I taken Algebra 2 yet?

This class is the foundational level for the entirety of the math sections for the SAT and ACT.

2. Do I have time to study over the next 6-8 weeks?

Make sure you are PREPARED for your SAT or ACT. Don't be like me and procrastinate until the day before, which once again proves why the August test date is the BEST date.

3. Will my extracurriculars or AP exams make certain months too stressful?

Since AP exams are in May, and EC's usually begin in September, those two options are immediately singled out as potentially suboptimal. While the September date worked for me, it may not work for everybody, so make sure you keep note of your time-management capabilities.

If you answer these questions honestly, the right date usually becomes quite obvious. And don't forgetprep matters more than the timing. Choose whichever dates you feel most comfortable and satisfied with. These are only guidelines for understanding each date.
