December 02, 2025

When is it the right time to pull out the colored lights, play those classic carols and bring out the eggnog? Right after Halloween? The moment Thanksgiving ends? Honestly, everyone seems to have a different opinion about when it's the "right" time to put up Christmas decorations.

Some people start as early as October, while others wait until early or mid-December! While there isn't necessarily a "correct" answer, understanding the different outlooks can definitely help you appreciate the holiday season more and figure out what's best for you.

Starting Early

I've noticed that many people who are especially excited for the season start decorating as soon as Halloween ends! Starting early allows you to get hold of factors that might cause stress if left for too long, such as buying gifts for loved ones. It can also make it easier to spread out the "holiday workload" to a manageable amount before the official season begins.

Although this can be a good approach, I've found that starting too early can make the season feel less exciting and even lead to burnout.

Post-Thanksgiving

While I might be biased, I personally think that waiting until after Thanksgiving is the perfect time to begin celebrating the holiday season. This way, you can enjoy traditions with family and let each holiday have its moment instead of rushing into Christmas. The wait ensures that you don’t have to juggle Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all at once. You get to actually enjoy each part without feeling overwhelmed.

For a personal example, every year my family and I throw a huge pre-Christmas party to decorate and bake our favorite treats. Our main event is decorating the tree. Last year, I’ll admit that I wasn’t totally in it. Most of the time, I was scrolling on my phone or just doing the bare minimum, all because I started prepping for Christmas by myself way too early.

Looking back, I really wish that I were more patient so I could learn to enjoy the moment, but now I’m definitely grateful I’ve learned to wait. Starting after Thanksgiving makes it feel like a kickoff to the season instead of just another random day. Those traditions are what make Christmas feel special for me, and they’re way more enjoyable when I don’t rush into them.

Late Decorators

Last but not least, we have the people who prefer to wait right until early or mid-December to get started with the holidays. Decorating later can reduce the "holiday fatigue' that a lot of people feel. By going all in, decorating can seem more spontaneous rather than dragging out the preparations for weeks.

This way isn't for everyone, since it can feel kind of rushed, but for some people, jumping into the holidays a bit later makes it more exciting and enjoyable in the moment.

Finding What Works for You

At the end of the day— or season—the right time to decorate really depends on what works best for you, your family, traditions and schedule. Some people love starting early, while others like to wait and build up the excitement. Both approaches are valid. Whether you want to start early or wait, the point is to enjoy it and make moments that make Christmas special for you.
