Comedian Matt Taylor on Virality and the Pressures of Social Media

Social Media

February 16, 2021

If you have been on TikTok for any amount of time, you have probably come across Matt Taylor. His short skits have earned him millions of followers and a huge success on the platform.

The 18-year-old social media influencer has garnered over 2.2M followers, with his videos regularly going viral. He is well known for his short and relatable comedy sketches on TikTok, which feature him taking everyday scenarios to the extreme.

Going Viral

You gained a huge amount of followers in such a short amount of time, what was that like for you?

It was really insane because it was just so unexpected, I would say. It feels unreal, and I'm so grateful for it. It is a bit overwhelming, but it is an amazing feeling honestly.

The Pressures of Social Media

Do you ever feel pressured to keep making the same genre of videos that made you famous?

I feel like everyone always has this kind of idea that they need to stick to what they're good at or what they are constantly doing. But I like to switch it up, a little bit at least, while also keeping my same style.

On Relevance

There are new trends every day, do you ever fear losing relevance?

I think that everyone fears losing relevance, it is social media and people are always going to the next thing. But, I think I'd rather look at how much that I've gotten and that is such an amazing thing, which I feel so grateful for. It's crazy that there is 2 million people out there who want to follow and support me, it's so weird.

His Plans For The Future

What are your plans for the future?

I would say that I never want to stop making TikToks— I love making them. I just want to keep finding ways to express myself and put myself out there. But TikTok is just the start.

On Feeling Overwhelmed

You have over 156 million likes [on TikTok], does that ever overwhelm you?

It is super overwhelming, but it's like crazy and unreal. I almost can't comprehend how crazy that is, if that makes sense.

His Creative Process

Do you have a creative process for making a video?

Yeah, I love to find things that we kinda have to do in our everyday lives and almost put it to the extreme and make it funny. My For You Page especially, there are so many funny people out there that I love to get inspired by.

His Advice To Aspiring Influencers

A lot of people will look to you as a model of what a successful influencer looks like, what is your advice to people who want to become “influencers”?

I think everyone wants to be a social media “person”, like it's everyone's dream. That is why I love it so much, and I'm so grateful for it. I would say, find something you love and do that. Because I promise you that there are others out there who love the same thing

On Handling Hate

Do you ever read the comments? How do you handle hate?

It used to get to me a little bit worse, but I think once you start getting them all the time, it's more like: there is always going to be people who don't like you, that's just part of life. But you just have to remember that there are so many people that love you, if that makes sense.

What He is Watching

What are you watching on TV right now?

I actually don't watch a lot of TV, but I am loving watching YouTube right now.

His Favorite Songs

What song is on repeat for you right now?

For me, I love finding new songs. I feel like this is going to sound so cringey to say, but I love listening to the indie playlist on Spotify. I love listening to a bunch of small, different artists.
